Sad news surfaced late Thursday as it was revealed that Lily Allen, who had been pregnant with her first child, suffered a miscarriage. The expecting father was boyfriend Ed Simons, who is one-half of the Chemical Brothers.

"We can confirm that Lily Allen has suffered a miscarriage," Murray Chalmers, a U.K. representative for the singer, said in a statement to MTV News. "She and her partner Ed Simons will be making no further comment, and we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

British tabloid The Sun and blogger Perez Hilton initially reported the news on Thursday. The Sun report said the 22-year-old singer and her boyfriend of four months were in a "state of shock." By early Friday (January 18), fans had flooded Allen's MySpace page with consolatory notes.

In mid-December, a representative for the singer told BBC News that Allen had been dating Simons since September and that they were "obviously both thrilled by the news" about the pregnancy, but that they would not comment any further. "As the pregnancy is at a very, very early stage, the couple ask that you respect their privacy, as the health of Lily and their child is their paramount concern," said the spokesperson, who was not named.

Prior to that announcement, however, Allen — whose Alright, Still LP is up for a Best Alternative Music Album Grammy — had, over the course of 2007, shot down many rumors that she was pregnant.

In a March interview with MTV News, she denied such rumors, saying, "At first I used to read things about me, and I'd get really angry and go on my blog and write a whole reply to it. But now, since there's so much of it, [I'm not] bothered to reply to it all. But some of it is true. [However] I am not a lesbian, I am not pregnant. But yeah. It's really annoying."

Mariah Carey is "thankful" to ex-husband Tommy Mottola but also felt like she was being controlled by the music executive while they were married, she divulged to Interview for the magazine's September issue, which hits newsstands Tuesday. In the magazine — the cover of which features a Bruce Weber photo of a barely clothed Carey — she says, "I am thankful to [Mottola] in a lot of ways. I try not to vilify him. I have to forgive him for being so restrictive. I understand him not wanting me to go out and hang out all night, but going to a spa with friends every now and then, or doing things on my own would have made a world of difference. And I'd probably still be with him if I had. Maybe it's for my own good that I wasn't 'allowed' to do those things, but that's not how it felt. It felt like suddenly I had a strict father. ... With Tommy it felt like I had this controlling situation where I wasn't allowed to be myself. This conversation that we're having now would never have taken place." Carey also opened up about the catastrophic Glitter collapse that preceded her surprise rebound. Attorneys for Jackson and the hospital have claimed the facts of the case didn't merit the suit.

R. Kelly appeared Tuesday in a Chicago court where prosecutors and defense attorneys ironed out a few more details in the R&B singer's child-pornography trial before jury selection starts September 17. After the prosecution tried for a reversal, Judge Vincent Gaughan upheld his ruling that the media and public could view the sex tape that allegedly depicts Kelly having sex with an underage girl and is at the heart of the charges. Gaughan said he wouldn't reconsider his original ruling because the girl who prosecutors say is in the video isn't cooperating with investigators and denies that she's the person on the tape. Had she said she was, the judge would give her victim status and protect her from a public viewing. Instead, he ruled Tuesday that the state can't call her a "victim" but must instead call her an "alleged victim" or the "state's witness." To attempt to prove that she is in fact the girl on the tape, the prosecution wants to call an expert witness to testify that denial is a common issue with victims of child pornography, but the defense argued that the theory is not backed up by science. Judge Gaughan delayed ruling on this, as well as whether an expert could testify that the veins in Kelly's hand are consistent with those in the hand of the man in the video. He is expected to rule on those matters at the next hearing, on September 10. ...

After a check found that the car's registration had been suspended, Brown, 27, reportedly gave officers a different version of her real name and a birth date that was a year off. When the information didn't come up, Brown then gave her correct information, at which point the officers found out that her license was suspended. She was taken to police headquarters and given seven traffic tickets and released. The traffic tussle came one day after Brown was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a New York neighbor with a BlackBerry. But still, Brown has some good news to help take her mind off things — according to the New York Post, she said outside a store in New York earlier this week, "I'm getting married in September.

Devra Robitaille, one of Phil Spector's ex-employees, testified Tuesday that he once threatened her at gunpoint when she attempted to leave his house. The scenario is similar to the ones outlined by four additional women during the music producer's murder trial. After the defense announced it was conditionally resting its case — and that Spector would not be taking the stand during the trial — the prosecution called Robitaille as a rebuttal witness, contrary to the wishes of the defense. She recalled being in Spector's house during a party in which he became heavily intoxicated, after which she said she was going to go home. "He said no and locked the door," testified Robitaille, who added that she had a romantic relationship with Spector. "I remember standing in the lobby with a door in front of me, and when I turned, there was a gun pointed at my temple. ... It was like a long-barreled shotgun." When officials arrived, they reportedly saw a number of campers involved in fights and a comfort station with portable toilets and sinks that had been set on fire.

The Jacksonville, Florida, chapter of the NAACP is protesting an editorial cartoon that criticized the "no snitchin' " street mantra and ran in the Friday edition of The Florida Times-Union. The image shows a black man wearing a "Don't Snitch" T-shirt, holding a smoking gun and standing over a gunshot victim. Behind him are two children, one a girl with dreadlocks who also wears a "Don't Snitch" shirt and says, "I didn't see nuttin'." In the cartoon, the man responds, "Now that's a good little ho." The comic, which is captioned "The new rule of law!," also has a billboard in the background with an image of a rapper holding a gun below the words "rap your life away," with BET and Warner Music Group called out at the bottom of the billboard. According to local TV affiliate NBC12, on Sunday, a Times-Union editorial-page editor apologized for the "bad judgment" in using the word "ho" in the cartoon. "The object of the cartoon was to comment on the rise of a no-snitching culture, something that is widely in the news today," Mike Clark explained.

Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't so into the initial idea of singing onstage last year with Jay-Z at London's Royal Albert Hall, she admitted to W magazine for its September issue. "Jay was playing at the Albert Hall on my birthday, and he said, 'Will you sing on this song?' " the actress told the mag. "At first I didn't want to do it!"

This week's an odd one, with almost too many titles hitting stores to count ... but probably just a few that'll have you reaching for your wallet. Luckily for us, there's enough variety among the litter to have some fun. Let's go.

Video Vipers: Avenged Sevenfold are greasing up a new, self-titled album for an October release, but while that's still in the works, 'Fold fanatics can sink their teeth — or eyes, rather, or ... oh well, never mind — into "All Excess," a new DVD. The title doesn't just allude to the band's hard-partying, c'mon-don't-we-really-look-like-GN'R-now? ways but also hints at what you'll find inside the set: more video bonuses than frontman M. Shadows has tattoos. Piled onto the disc is a documentary, live footage, music videos and segments capturing the making of each of them. "There's footage from some early shows, when we still sucked," Shadows told MTV News' Chris Harris. "[You'll] learn everything about us with this DVD."

Turn the volume knob down a notch or two and you'll be ready for the All-American Rejects, who are teeing up a video set of their own this week. This one's got a funny name too — "Tournado" — but that was actually the band's craftily named trek with Motion City Soundtrack, Gym Class Heroes and others. The resplendently packaged DVD captures the band's gig in the Twin Cities, plus the requisite on-the-road documentary, photo gallery — and a not-so-requisite batch of skits.

Hey guys, wait for us! Underoath are also anteing up with a DVD, the piously titled "777" (well, they are Christians, after all). Frontman Spencer Chamberlain and the crew have dumped onto their disc 75 minutes of unreleased footage from the Warped Tour, Taste of Chaos and other stints, as well as videos and a making-of doc.

So it's Tyson Ritter vs. M. Shadows vs. Spencer Chamberlain. You decide. They all sound like porn stars to us.

Now and Then: Who are we kidding — a quick glance at the listings below will tell you that this week's heaviest hitter is definitely Now That's What I Call Music! 25, and if the set featured more than just previously issued fare, we'd have more to say about it. It doesn't, so we don't.

A Bit of Hip-Hop: With all the rock that's been hitting stores the last two weeks — Smashing Pumpkins, Interpol, Against Me!, etc. — you'd figure rap would want to step up its game on the whole. But that really hasn't been the case (MCs must still be fearing the mighty T.I.) That said, Too Short is plopping a new effort into his massive catalog, and for once the title isn't about chicks or pimps or ego — in a sweet gesture, he's named it I Love the Bay. New York rapper Akir is also stepping up to the plate — well, sorta: His paradoxically named debut, Legacy is back again, thanks to Babygrande, with guest spots by Jean Grae, Immortal Technique and others still intact.

Well, Aren't They Special: When all else fails, there's always the vaults. This week, two ladies and a Guy are back thanks to bonus-track-laden special editions of their noted LPs. Erykah Badu's Baduizm is getting beefed up via B-sides, U.K.-only cuts and more hard-to-find tunes, while sister-in-soul India.Arie's Acoustic Soul is getting similar treatment. Guy's eponymous release is getting a full disc of extras, though ... feeling jealous, ladies? Don't be: As far as reissues go, Garbage have them all beat — the special limited-edition version of their best-of Absolute Garbage boasts a second disc of remixes by Massive Attack, Crystal Method, UNKLE and more.

Chemical Balance: While we're on the subject of electronic music, don't forget the mighty Chemical Brothers. That's right, mighty: While the group's releases have been slipping Stateside — 1997's Dig Your Own Hole peaked at #14 on the Billboard albums chart, followed by 1999's Surrender at #32, 2002's Come With Us also at #32 and 2005's Push the Button at #59 — the group's last five releases have all hit #1 in the U.K. That includes its new one, We Are the Night, which docks at U.S. shores this week. Featured on the effort are legendary Canadian beat poet Bill Bissett, members of Klaxons, Fatlip of the Pharcyde and progressive-rockers Midlake.

Throwing a Changeup: Or maybe we should say "gyro ball" ... either way, if you're looking for something different this week — and happen to like a little rinky-dink team of scrappers called the Boston Red Sox — you'll want to dig your cleats in a little deeper. Music From the Mound is a new compilation curated (supposedly) by Japanese pitching import Daisuke Matsuzaka (a.k.a. Dice-K). Featured on the disc — seriously, don't laugh — is a song called "Gyro Ball" featuring no less than J. Geils harmonica player Magic Dick, onetime Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and Sox TV announcers Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy. The team's charity, the Red Sox Foundation, will be getting all proceeds from the album, which features other anthems for a nation ... Red Sox Nation, that is.

Song Title of the Week:

"Handicapitation" from Birdflesh's Mongo Musicale

Album Cover of the Week:

Winters' Black Clouds in Twin Galaxies

Other Notables:

Los Campesinos!'s Sticking Fingers Into Sockets
This Welsh band came together thanks to a common affection for Super Furry Animals and the Decemberists — which should give you an indication of its indie-pop goodness. Before heading into the studio to record their proper debut with Broken Social Scene producer David Newfeld, Los Campesinos! are bowing with this enhanced EP. Look out for "We Throw Parties, You Throw Knives," "You! Me! Dancing!" and other timelessly titled tracks.

Eastern Conference Champions' Ameritown
These guys wish they were from Wales, or somewhere in British, even though the solidly American squad named their album the way they did. The group hooked up with Oasis and Verve producer Owen Morris for this LP and just toured with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club too. And while BRMC aren't from overseas either, they're also all about My Bloody Valentine, Spacemen 3 and other louder-than-thou Brit psych bands. Expect to hear lotsa soaring vocals, heavily distorted psych guitars and big drums on this LP.

Mick Harvey's Two of Diamonds
You might know him from the Bad Seeds or the Birthday Party ... eh, you probably haven't heard of Mick Harvey at all. The longtime (read: decades-long) Nick Cave collaborator has a few things of his own to say, which he details on his follow-up to 2005's One Man's Treasure. Enlisting PJ Harvey pianist/drummer Rob Ellis — oh, and a double-bass, too — Harvey spills his soul on "Slow-Motion Movie Star," "Home Is Far From Here" and "Out of Time Man." So are we!

Madonna popped out of a disco ball, the Gorillaz got animated and Green Day and Coldplay dominated the MTV Europe Music Awards, performing live and winning two awards each at Thursday's ceremony in Lisbon, Portugal.

Dressed in a purple leotard and purple leather jacket, Madonna emerged from a giant disco ball to open the show, performing her new single, "Hung Up."

(Click here for images from this year's MTV Europe Music Awards.)

This year's ceremony was hosted by comedian Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakhstani alter ego, Borat Sagdiyev, who greeted the audience by saying, "Welcome to the 2005 Eurovision song contest!" Poking fun at his pal Madonna, he then said, "It was very courageous of MTV to start the show with a genuine transvestite."

Gorillaz's win for Best Group brought a chuckle when co-founder/cartoonist Jamie Hewlett said, "We are the best group, and we don't even exist." The band "performed" at the show via three-dimensional holograms of their cartoon images projected onto the stage.

Also taking home awards were Robbie Williams (Best Male), Shakira (Best Female), Alicia Keys (Best R&B), Chemical Brothers (Best Video - "Believe") and the Black Eyed Peas (Best Pop).

In addition to performances by Green Day, Coldplay and Gorillaz, the show at Lisbon's Pavilhão Atlântico featured sets from the Foo Fighters, Shakira, System of a Down, the Pussycat Dolls and Robbie Williams.

The event also featured the presentation of the Free Your Mind humanitarian award, which was given to Live Aid and Live 8 founder Sir Bob Geldof by Madonna.

Nearly three years after the release of Bright Eyes' last studio album, singer Conor Oberst is rewarding patient fans with two discs at once.

The Nebraska-bred emo-folk artist's brainchild, Bright Eyes, will release two albums this week, the traditional I'm Wide Awake It's Morning, and the more experimental Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. Oberst didn't shoulder all the burden for the two albums, though; he brought in a couple of musically inclined friends for support, including Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who appears on five Digital Ash tracks, Emmylou Harris, members of the Faint and others.

Worlds Apart from Bright Eyes' style is the new ... And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead album. The album, which kicks off with a grandiose introduction featuring a choir chanting the names of Egyptian gods, was held back by the band's label to keep it from getting buried under a glut of holiday releases by big-name artists.

While he works on his solo debut, Bred to Die, due later this year, Lil Scrappy is tiding fans over with the chopped & screwed edition of his split album with Trillville, The King of Crunk & BME Recordings Present: Lil Scrappy and Trillville, which was released in February 2004.

Also hitting stores this week are albums by the Chemical Brothers (Push the Button), Emma — of Spice Girls fame — (Free Me), Erasure (Nightbird), Ani DiFranco (Knuckle Down), Agnostic Front (Another Voice), Buck 65 (This Right Here Is Buck 65) and LeAnn Rimes (This Woman).

If you thought all Bad Boy's Da Band did was choke each other on national television, think again. The kids from "Making the Band 2" got an album out of their time together as well. Too Hot for TV features the six scrappers from the series as well as guest star Wyclef Jean and da man behind Da Band, P. Diddy.

We've all heard about Sting's Sacred Love, but this time we're talking about his new album. Mary J. Blige joins him on the ballad "Whenever I Say Your Name," and Sting addresses the war in Iraq on "This War." Also out this week is airy Brit-pop singer Dido's Life for Rent, featuring the first single "White Flag" and "The Eyes of Alice Cooper," on which the rocker finally gives his famous eyeliner-smeared peepers their due.

Paul Oakenfold releases a mix CD — a two-disc set that remixes Madonna and Björk, among others. And Kelly Osbourne gets a bit of a remix herself as her debut album, Shut Up, is rechristened Changes. The disc features five new tracks, including a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes" co-sung by her famous dad, Ozzy.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Radio Sunnydale features music by Michelle Branch, Blur and Joey Ramone, plus the Dandy Warhols on the show's theme song. Elsewhere in soundtrack land, the Jack Black movie "School of Rock" is set to classic rock tunes by the Who, the Doors, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, the Ramones and, of course, the School of Rock itself.

Finally, "Beef": it's what's on shelves this week. The DVD features 50 Cent, DMX, Ja Rule and other feuding rappers doing what they do best.

For many college-radio and music-industry personnel, it's time to break out the fall jackets, earplugs, aspirin and business cards, because the annual CMJ Music Marathon is rolling out in New York again.

From October 30 to November 2, 900 artists will permeate the Big Apple with shows in more than 50 venues as part of the 2002 incarnation of one of the largest and longest-running music festivals. Mash-up maestros 2 Many DJ's, NYC "it"-sters the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Swedish exports the Soundtrack of Our Lives are among the must-see highlights, with Jurassic 5, Box Car Racer, the Chemical Brothers and Sigur Rós also due to turn in performances. Most shows are open to the public.

This year's marathon is not without its sense of humor, as comedic performances by David Cross, supporting his double-disc comedy album Shut Up You F---king Baby!, and puppet pooch Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, perhaps providing a glimpse at his forthcoming Come Poop With Me, are also scheduled.

Concerts are only half of the CMJ Music Marathon. Panel discussions on topics ranging from copyright protection and sampling to Internet radio, label consolidation and the rise of the New York rock scene take place each afternoon at the Hilton New York hotel. A Q&A session with former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, conducted by rock scribe Dave Marsh, and an intimate discussion with Tori Amos are among the key talks.

Other artists slated to perform include Ben Kweller, the Polyphonic Spree, Radio 4, Medeski Martin and Wood, Bright Eyes, Thursday, the Moldy Peaches, Simian, (International) Noise Conspiracy, Pretty Girls Make Graves and Imperial Teen.

Although the kickoff is more than a week away, the event has already been met with its first flare-up. Ipecac Records, the independent label co-owned by former Faith No More singer and all-around eccentric Mike Patton, was forced to cancel a sold-out party and showcase on October 31 because its venue, the Roxy, was double-booked with a performance by DJ Carl Cox. Attempts to find another home for Skeleton Key, Isis, Tomahawk and Fantômas Melvins Big Band — the latter two groups include Patton — proved fruitless, and the show was called off.

"We started this label three and a half years ago as a way to operate differently than what is the norm in the music industry, to be artist friendly and fan friendly," Patton said in a statement. "This show was a celebration of what we have built in such a short period of time, a vindication of our goals. Now we stand here apologizing, looking like fools, yet we did nothing wrong."

Clear Channel Communications, which originally booked the Ipecac show at Irving Plaza and then moved it to the larger Roxy due to the high level of demand, has filed suit against the venue, seeking reimbursement and unspecified damages, according to an Ipecac spokesperson.

The Carl Cox show, which is not part of the festival, is going ahead as scheduled.

A complete list of performers and panels can be found at the CMJ Web site.

Having recently produced songs for New Order and Beth Orton, the Chemical Brothers are ready to man an entire album. Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons are just waiting for the right project to come along.

"We would have to find an artist who we're really excited about so there would be a point to it," Simons said, sitting in his trailer backstage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival Saturday (see "Review: Bjork's Pit, Beck's Set Among Few Surprises At Risk-Free Coachella").

Unlike their friend Norman Cook (a.k.a. Fatboy Slim), however, the Chemicals are not putting their own recording careers on hiatus to produce. "The next thing we want to do is make an album, but who knows what after," Simons said.

The Chemical Brothers, who just finished an April tour of the States, have only some vague ideas for the follow-up to Come With Us, which was released at the beginning of the year (see "Chemical Brothers Spent Months Refining Formula For Come With Us"). Still, they hope to have a single out by the end of the summer.

"We've got some stuff that we've worked out live that we want to get in the studio and maybe get out for Ibiza," Simons said. Added Rowlands as he adjusted his signature glasses, "Playing live is good because it shows you what people react to, what works. Our music is very energetic. It's made to be listened to by a lot of people. Sometimes it just reminds you of the certain power."

In the meantime the duo have just released the third single from Come With Us, "The Test," which includes guest vocals from Richard Ashcroft. The video for the track features footage of a woman who lives underwater and sees haunting things when on land.

"The song is quite psychedelic and big, so it fits with the woozy video," Rowlands said. "It's just mad. I've never seen a video like it before. That's always a good thing." Dom & Nic, who have directed several of the Chemical Brothers' videos, including "Setting Sun," were chosen for "The Test" thanks to a treatment that pleased the pair.

"Quite twisted and psychedelic is generally what we're aiming for," Simons said.

Dating back to their first album, 1995's Exit Planet Dust, the Chemical Brothers have worked with other artists, particularly Orton. However, the title track on her upcoming Daybreaker album (see "Beth Orton Tours, Breaks Day With Ryan Adams, Chemical Brothers") and the New Order song "Here to Stay" from the "24 Hour Party People" soundtrack mark their first major producing projects outside of their own music.

"Sitting in the studio with Bernard [Sumner] and Peter Hook, these are people whose music we grew up with and worshiped, so it was fun to be in the studio at the same time," Rowlands said. "And the track we did with [Orton] for her record is a really beautiful piece of music. We're really excited about it."

INDIO, California — To the left, a full moon illuminated a row of palm trees swaying in a mellow breeze as the Beta Band played their melodic pop. To the right, a red sun set over a gorgeous mountain range as Siouxsie and the Banshees wrapped up their first festival performance in more than seven years.

Ahead, DJ Z-Trip captivated a titanic tent overflowing with dancers by marrying Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and Rage Against the Machine's "Testify." It was a stereophonic moment of musical bliss. It was Coachella in a nutshell.(click for
photos.)

The third annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival took over the Empire Polo Fields (with a few horse "droppings" still on the ground) in this upscale desert town over the weekend and celebrated the unavoidable diversity of today's musical climate.

Part rock concert, part rave, the event takes everything fans and artists love about the Europe's summer music festivals and transports them to a Stateside locale known for spa resorts and country clubs. The result, at least this year, was 30,000 sunburned music geeks racing back and forth between four stages.

Interestingly, Coachella 2002 as a whole was far more compelling than any of the performances, which — for a festival that is supposed to be more progressive than the garden variety radio station hooplas — were relatively risk-free.

Headliners Björk and the Chemical Brothers on Saturday and the Prodigy and Oasis on Sunday lived up to their top billing by stocking their sets with hits but did little to differentiate their shows from any other night on a stage.

Björk, beautiful in a white satin dress and olive green belt, and polite in her execution during and in between songs, seemed to the be the festival highlight, judging by the size and energy (mosh pits?!) of the audience during her show, which drew heavily from last year's sonically adventurous Vespertine.

Coachella house band the Chemical Brothers (in their third appearance at the festival) appeased the masses with near-album versions of their glowstick-toting rock anthems, such as "Block Rockin' Beats," opting to let Sasha and John Digweed, who performed simultaneously in the Sahara Tent, get creative with the club cuts.

In their first show on American soil in a half-decade, the Prodigy performed as though five years hadn't passed, urging the crowd to go crazy for "Smack My Bitch Up" and "Breathe." Many did, and for good reason since the fist-pumping tunes still sound ahead of their time, although you couldn't help but yearn for a grander re-entrance. And what about the new music Liam Howlett and the guys have been supposedly recording in recent years?

After hearing Keith Flint's high-pitched screams for the better half of an hour, the tunefully textured voices of Oasis' Gallagher brothers were a warm welcome. In a set that included four new tracks from their soon-to-be-released Heathen Chemistry, the British rockers showcased their penchant for sing-along radio fare, especially on "Go Let It Out" and "Supersonic."

Two of Coachella's best performances were unannounced. On Saturday, at the end of DJ Z-Trip's fascinating show, Beck took the stage to a mix of his own "Where It's At" and sang and breakdanced to it before sitting down for an impromptu three-song acoustic set that featured the classic "A--hole."

On Sunday, Tenacious D introduced their friends the Foo Fighters by performing a few of their most hilarious numbers. Jack Black, flapping around onstage like a drunken peacock, won over the D-Fest (as he called it) crowd with his between-song banter. "Where's the interactive sex tent?" he asked, before closing the set with "Tribute."

Z-Trip and the Foos were highlights, even without their special guests. The former messed with pop culture in dangerous ways (Jacko and Zacko together?) but made everything sound even cooler than before. Dave Grohl was a blast of fire in his day job, busting through most of the Foo Fighters favorites. The band also played a few new tunes, which gave nods to classic rock ditties like the Who's "Baba O'Riley."

In his night job, Grohl played some ferocious drums with Queens of the Stone Age on Saturday. With the former Nirvana drummer providing the beats and former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan adding vocals, Queens sounded almost like a different band than on 2000's Rated R. Some things never change, though, as they were definitely the loudest group of the weekend. Song-wise, the new material was as crunchy as ever, but with a more melodic twist.

Queens with Grohl was one of Coachella's must-see shows, though not as buzzed-about as the Stokes' performance. Attracting an audience of stars flocking from the VIP area — including Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, Robbie Williams, Linkin Park's Mike Shinoda, Crazy Town's Shifty Shellshock, Kelly Osbourne, Andy Dick and even ex-MTV VJ Jesse Camp — the New York garage rockers busted out a solid set capped off by "Last Nite." It was a mostly between-the-lines set, but the Strokes excited their fans by debuting a few new songs.

Another one of the festival's hotly tipped acts were the Vines from Australia, who rocked the Mojave Tent as Björk played the main stage. Sounding like early Nirvana, the rock trio ripped through several of their rhythmically fluctuating tracks before animated singer Craig Nicholls and crew ripped out a stellar cover of Outkast's "Ms. Jackson."

Some of Saturday's other standouts included Cornershop in jam-band mode, Forest for the Trees' bagpipe pop, and the one-two punch of roots rock from Pete Yorn and Jack Johnson. The former's "Strange Condition" and the latter's "Flake" provided the perfect soundtrack for sprawling across the grass and relaxing.

Sunday was crammed with some memorable ensemble bands, ranging from Mos Def's "ghetto metal" Black Jack Johnson to Latin hip-hoppers Ozomatli. The Sahara Tent was the place to be if you wanted to dance, however, boasting a raver's dream lineup: BT, Paul Oakenfold, Pete Tong, DJ Tiesto, Bad Boy Bill and Sandra Collins in a matter of hours.

And, of course, Coachella veteran Perry Farrell took the decks, delivering a mix of tropicalia and trance perfect for a sunset as stunning as the day before.

It wasn't as magical as the Monterey Pop Festival or the Woodstocks, but the 24 hours of music and more than 50 performances that made up Coachella were far from "droppings."

Read about all of the shows we've recently covered in Tour Reports.
