It's getting hot in herre, so lay down all your dough ... and then you too can bump all these new summer releases.

First up, Nelly's Nellyville. The follow-up to Country Grammar finds the St. Lunatic, with the help of producer Jay E, espousing the power of Pimp Juice and imploring us to take off our clothes.

Someone else who must have gotten into the stash of the Juice is Will Smith, who is releasing Born to Reign just one week before his summer blockbuster "Men in Black 2" hits theaters. The album features the hit "Black Suits Comin' (Nod Ya Head)," which also gets airtime in the movie.

Veracity abounds as Truth Hurts gives us Truthfully Speaking and Cormega offers True Meaning to the mix. Vida Blue, the new project from Phish's Page McConnell, release their self-titled debut album, while rock and roll vets Sonic Youth release Murray Street, their first record in two years.

Perhaps the most puzzling release this week is comedian Steve Harvey's Sign of Things to Come, a collection of his favorite hip-hop and R&B songs which brings a whole new meaning to "Rub the stump."

A new album from the band named after a place the sun doesn't shine will finally see the light of day next month, complete with a track co-written by an "American Bad Ass."
Experimental rockers the Butthole Surfers will release their first album in five years, Weird Revolution, on August 28, even though the family of Malcolm X forced the band back to the drawing board at the 11th hour.

In the lyrics on the track "The Weird Revolution," frontman Gibby Haynes copped a passage — save a few words — from one of the assassinated black activist's most famous speeches, "The Black Revolution." In the opinion of the band's new label, Hollywood Records, Haynes' take on the speech so closely resembled the original, the company's legal department thought it best to check with Malcolm X's family, who denied the band permission to reinterpret it, according to a label spokesperson.

"The Black Revolution," originally given at Harlem's Abyssinian Baptist Church in June 1963, called for African-Americans to separate from, not integrate with, the society that oppressed them for 400 years and urged the U.S. government to grant them their own country.

"The Weird Revolution," on the other hand, calls for a similar separation, although this time the "freaks" are seeking independence from "normal society."
Haynes has reworked the lyrics, and the song is still slated to appear on the band's eighth studio album, the follow-up to 1996's Electriclarryland.
The original successor to Electriclarryland, After the Astronaut, was prepared in 1998 for Capitol Records, but a falling out with the label kept the album from being released (see "Butthole Surfers Returning With New Label, Album"). Eight songs from those sessions have been reworked for Weird Revolution.
A group whose career spans nearly two decades, the twisted Texans might attract a new generation of fans with Weird Revolution's first single, "The Shame of Life." The track was co-written by Haynes and, according to the album's liner notes, Robert J. Ritchie, better known as Kid Rock.

Weird Revolution's track listing, according to Hollywood Records:

"The Weird Revolution"

"The Shame of Life"

"Dracula From Houston"

"Venus"

"Sh-- Like That"

"Mexico"

"Intelligent Guy"

"Get Down"

Marcy Playground Unwittingly Inherits Cover Art From Butthole Surfers

Call it the "Mysterious Cover Art Case."
During a recent online exchange between Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers and John Wozniak of Marcy Playground, Wozniak found out that the album artwork on his band's new LP, "Shapeshifter," was actually originally conceived for the Surfers.
The design in question was created by artist Mark Ryden, who based his piece on a sketch made by Leary while the group was still on Capitol Records, the current home of Marcy Playground.
After the Surfers split from Capitol for a new home at Hollywood Records (see "Butthole Surfers Returning With New Label, Album"), Capitol ended up retaining the rights to the image, and its art department apparently handed it off to the unwitting band Marcy Playground.
In a strange twist of fate, cover art issues apparently became an issue between the Butthole Surfers and their previous label prior to the band's departure. The band was supposedly
forced to delay the release of what would have been its last Capitol album, "The Last Astronaut," back in 1998 (see "Butthole Surfers Album Delayed By Cover Art").
On the Marcy Playground Web site, Wozniak writes that the group is "baffled and mortified" by the switch. Wozniak also adds, "I can't apologize enough for Capitol Records' lame maneuver, but I can, at least, genuinely say that I am honored to have a record cover partly designed by Paul Leary of the Butthole Surfers."
Capitol Records has declined to comment on the matter as of press time.

-- David Basham

After a spate of label troubles, the Butthole Surfers are planning to resurface with a new album early in the year 2000.
The band has been dormant since a falling-out with Capitol Records over its last album, "After The Astronaut," which was never released.

"It was a feud between our former manager and the former president of Capitol Records," guitarist Paul Leary told MTV News. "They were both 'formers,' but for some reason it set off a chain of events that put Capitol into this 'grind this f***ing band into the dirt and flush them down the toilet' mode.'"
But the two parties have now resolved their differences, and the group will be releasing its next project on Surfdog/Hollywood Records. Surfdog label head Dave Kaplan is also signing on as the Butthole Surfers' new manager, and he told MTV News that his company hopes to issue a full-length Butthole Surfers album in February 2000. The band also plans to tour behind its next LP.

Surfdog is the label responsible for releasing the group's first output since 1996's "Electriclarryland." The group's cover of the Lovin' Spoonful hit "Summer In The City" will be included on "MOM III," the Surfrider Foundation benefit album (see "Lit, Smash Mouth Added Alongside Beck, Beasties, Snoop, Pearl Jam On 'MOM III'"). The band has also provided a remix for Perry Farrell's track on the record, which is due out this August.

But exactly how much of the stalled "Astronaut" album will be included on the new record is still unclear. Capitol got as far as shipping out promo copies of the unreleased album last spring-- against the band's wishes, according to Leary.

Surfers drummer King Coffey told MTV News, "There will be several different songs on the new album, and any material from the album that Capitol leaked is going to be remixed or at least rearranged. It will be different. There's been a bunch of songs done. We don't know which ones are going to be on the record. It won't be all of them unless it's a quadruple CD."
Leary confirmed that the group has been recording new material at Willie Nelson's studio in Austin and at their individual residences, but he dismissed a published report that one song on the new record will be a rap tune called "S**t Like That," while another track will sport "Beach Boy-ish harmonies."
One thing to not expect on the album is a song with the commercial appeal of the band's only hit single, "Pepper," which charted in '96 and spurred "Electriclarryland" to sales of over 600,000.

"We got a hit record, and everything went to s**t," complained Leary. "It was okay when we were a s**tty little band with s**tty little songs that nobody cared about. Capitol loved us. But then we got a hit record, and they started treating us like s**t. We're not going to do that again."
Capitol wasn't the only label battle undertaken by the Butthole Surfers. In 1996, the group successfully sued to get the rights back to the four albums it recorded with independent label Touch & Go Records. That situation caused the band to feel even further more at odds with the industry, Leary explained.
"[The Touch & Go situation] was another case where it was like, 'Excuse us for being your most successful band.'" said Leary. "They started treating us like s**t, too. That happens whenever we make money for these people."
The band has just reissued those records on its own label, Latino Buggerveil.

Meanwhile, the trio's individual members haven't been as busy as one might imagine during their recent downtime. Leary, known for his production work with Sublime as well as Supersuckers, Meat Puppets, and Stone Temple Pilots, accepted few studio offers. Frontman Gibby Haynes only played the odd date with his side project the Jack Officers. And Coffey shut down his independent label Trance Syndicate because, he said, it was too much work. "I think we were all pretty burned out on the business," Coffey admitted.

"King didn't have it in him to be an asshole," added Leary.

The Butthole Surfers have pushed back the release date of their new album, entitled "The Last Astronaut," until September.

The record, the follow-up to the band's 1996 breakthrough, "Electric Larryland," has been delayed by the final delivery of the album art. A source close to the band would not describe the nature of the cover art or the reason for the delay, only that its tardiness had affected the record's manufacturing schedule.

The change marks the second time that "The Last Astronaut" has been delayed, the album was originally scheduled to ship in May, but was subsequently altered to late July due to production glitches.

May 8 [14:00 EST] -- Butthole Surfers front man Gibby Haynes hits the big screen in "Nowhere," the new film from director Gregg Araki. Haynes plays Jujyfruit, a wild character who throws the ultimate Hollywood Hills party.

"Nowhere," which opens Friday in theaters--is the final installment of Araki's "Teen Apocalypse" trilogy, which started in 1994 with "Totally F***ed Up" and continued with "Doom Generation." In Nowhere, Araki again presents his take on the end-of-millenium Generation X audience.

"I wanted to portray the world from a messed-up 18-year-old's perspective," says Araki. "A world within which anything can happen...everything is hyper-accentuated. The film attempts to capture these extreme highs and lows."

Haynes is part of a cast that spans the spectrum of 90's pop-culture royalty including Christina Applegate ("Married with Children"), Jaason Simmons ("Baywatch"), Kathleen Robertson ("Beverly Hills 90210"), and Heather Graham ("Swingers"). There
are a few other choice cameos by Brady Bunch's Christopher Knight and Eve Plumb (we'll leave it to you to figure out which Brady kids they played), Traci Lords, Shannon Doherty, Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Garrett from "The Facts of Life"), and John Ritter ("Three's Company").

The soundtrack for Nowhere features music by 311, Radiohead, Elastica, Hole, the Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Coco and the Bean, Catherine Wheel, Curve, Lush, Ruby, James, Chuck D., Marilyn Manson, and the London Suede.

Feb. 5 [18:00 EST] -- Butthole Surfers fans won't be the only ones interested in the band's website, which now boasts a new weekly Internet radio show called "Brainwash," hosted by drummer King Coffey.

The show, which kicked off on February 1, is named after a song by the San Francisco post-punk band Flipper, and Coffey promises to play that track along with at least one vintage Texas-punk tune in each show. If the old school isn't your thing, don't worry... Coffey plays modern tracks too.

For a slightly nastier form of fun at the Butthole website, you can play with their "Online Voodoo Dolly," which currently torments Darius Rucker of Hootie and the Blowfish.

The identity of the doll changes every now and then, so if you feel the need to vent on Mr. Rucker vicariously, you better visit the site, at www.buttholesurfers.com, soon.

Butthole Surfer's Chart With "Larry"

Aug. 23, 1996 -- Austin's Butthole Surfers have ended 15 years of hitlessness with an actual chart single, "Pepper," off the band's latest album, "Electriclarryland." So what's with the critical sniping? Let's take a look.

GIBBY HAYNES, Butthole Surfers: Most rock bands today are Sha Na Na at Woodstock.

KURT LODER: Well, maybe. But after 15 years together authenticity is no longer an issue for Austin's Butthole Surfers. Consider, well, their name for one thing.

KING COFFEY, Butthole Surfers: Its a really great punk rock name because the whole idea of rock'n'roll is to offend your parents.

LODER: Alas, some parents still run record stores, and when they got a look at the cover art for the latest Butthole masterwork "Electriclarryland." 4 big retail chains demanded an immediate overlay of good taste and general niceness.

PAUL LEARY, Butthole Surfers: Yeah, let's call this M-80 a ladyfinger.

KING COFFEY: For some reason "B***H*** SURFERS" to
me seems more perverse than "Butthole Surfers." It seems like it's really drawing grand attention to the name. This is a really dirty thing, you dirty birdie!

LODER: Moral arbiters may be especially upset about the Surfers because with their 13th album, the band is actually selling. Thanks in large part to the single, "Pepper," a track some critical curmudgeons dismiss as a rip of the Beck hit "Loser."

COFFEY: I don't really understand how sampling turns you into Beck.

LEARY: We were the first to use drum loops, the first. Before Easy E.

LODER: Well, it's not the alleged Beck connection that's made the Buttholes a hot property in the Summer of '96, it's, well... there are other reasons.

HAYNES: Beavis and Butthead made butthole a safe word for the United States to say. They brought buttholes out of the bathroom and onto the dinner table.

LEARY: Everybody else decided to really suck this summer and give the Butthole Surfers the chance that
they deserve.

COFFEY: Well, we find young bands, cut off their heads and drink their blood.
