It's a motley crew releasing new albums this week, with Melissa Auf Der Maur dropping her first solo project, Truth Hurts and the Baha Men seeking a return to the spotlight, and an electronic band getting dreamy.

Melissa Auf Der Maur, former Hole and Smashing Pumpkins bassist, tries her hand at a solo career with her debut album, Auf Der Maur. Auf Der Maur has brought along some friends to help out, though, including members and former members of Queens of the Stone Age, Hole, A Perfect Circle, Helmet and the Offspring.

Truthfully Speaking, it's been two years since Dr. Dre protégé Truth Hurts released her last album. Well, she's Ready Now, and releasing her sophomore album this week.

Holla at the Baha Men. The group is letting its dogs out again with a new album, Holla! The Men have released three albums since 2000's immensely successful Who Let the Dogs Out, but none have had a comparable runaway hit.

Like Kraftwerk? Have a fondness for electronic music and synthesizers? Tangerine Dream may be right up your alley. They release Dream Mixes 4 this week.

Flying under the radar this week are albums by Downset (Universal), Melissa Ferrick (The Other Side) and Katey Sagal of "Married With Children" fame (Room).

BT's Music From and Inspired by the Film "Monster" shares shelf space this week with Deerhoof's concept album Milk Man and Henry Rollins' collection of readings from his book of the same name, Black Coffee Blues.

Brides of Destruction, featuring Nikki Sixx of Mötley Crüe and Tracii Guns from L.A. Guns, release Here Come the Brides alongside Fleshcrawl's Made of Flesh and throwback rockers Tesla's Into the Now.

Finally, the indie contingent: Brooklyn, New York, rock group TV on the Radio serve up Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, Scotland's retro rockers Franz Ferdinand release their self-titled LP, and Your Enemies Friends remind you that You Are Being Videotaped. But we're sure they mean that in a good way.

That Smash Mouth, always sweet-talkin' the ladies. "You are My Number One" is the first single from Get the Picture? and acts as the band's requisite summer single. Also on the album are the succinctly summarized tunes "Hot" and "Fun."

Killing Joke's latest self-titled album features drumming by Dave Grohl. Meanwhile, the Libertines release the EP I Get Along alongside '60s guitar god Jeff Beck's Jeff and Junior Senior's Euro-pop album D-D-Don't Stop the Beat.

Blues Traveler get honest on Truth Be Told, on which the jam band makes an effort to keep its songs from wandering. On the other hand, drummer Josh Freese (A Perfect Circle, the Vandals) drops a solo album under the name Stripsearch and tries his hand at some improvisational sounds. The self-titled album features his brother and music mate Jason Freese on the saxophone, plus bass player Mike Elizondo (Eminem) and guitarist Michael Ward (Wallflowers).

Finally, with the exception of a song extolling the virtues of Zoloft and some routine wordplay, wacky Ween tone down their act a bit and get more serious on Quebec. Ooh la la.

Are laptops the new turntables?

While some underground DJs abandoned the wheels of steel a few years ago, the big names in electronic music have continued to entertain dancers the old-fashioned way. Until now.

BT, one of the innovators of trance who went on to produce 'NSYNC's "Pop," is planning to debut a live set early next year that will feature only two laptops and Oxygen 8 keyboards, which work as an interface with computers.

"It's much more like remixing live than it is like DJing," BT explained at his home studio recently. "I'll have some other people's tracks and my tracks and a capellas from different sh--. And on headphones, as if I were cueing up a record, I'll load some software synths and I'll play an acid line or bassline that fits with the record that I'm playing. And instead of beatmixing in another record, I'll beatmix in a bunch of lines, then fade that track out and drop a breakbeat of my own. So there'll be a track playing that didn't exist before I stepped up to the decks. It's some really intense sh--."

BT, who was also one of the first electronic music stars to sing and perform with a band, has been experimenting with his new form of DJing during some of his standard sets.

"I took the Beatles' 'Day Tripper' and put it on top of beats from [Kraftwerk's] Trans-Europe Express and then on top of a Dylan Rhymes track, all in real time, though," he said of a recent gig. "On turntables, you can only go to plus eight or 10 [beats per minute] in either direction. With this I can take something that's 60 BPM and make it 130. And it works amazing."

Fans who aren't able to catch BT's shows will likely be able to see the DJ in action on a DVD he hopes to release next year. Since he will have at least 20 tracks left over from the recording sessions for his new album (see "BT Secretive About 'NSYNC Payback On Upcoming Album"), BT plans to include unreleased music on the DVD, along with live footage and behind-the-scenes material he shot himself.

"I run around with my little eight-millimeter camera all the time and I've filmed some beautiful stuff," BT said.

For the DVD, BT may also mix some of his songs in 5.1 surround sound. "It gives you a lot more room to work with," he noted. "And I'm the guy who can use it."

BT tour dates, according to Nettwerk:

12/21 - Orlando, FL @ Icon

12/31 - Villa Park, IL @ Odeum Expo

1/24 - San Diego, CA @ Montage

BT Secretive About 'NSYNC Payback On Upcoming Album

TARZANA, California — BT is hesitant to reveal that his new album features a collaboration with JC Chasez, but not because he's worried about ruining his dance-music credibility.

"I've been playing it in my sets and I'm top secret about who it is, 'cause I want people to judge it on the song, not the whole 'NSYNC affiliation," the DJ/producer explained Friday at his home studio. "People go f---ing nuts, even my super cool friends that would never admit to [liking 'NSYNC]. They're like, 'Wow, this is such a great tune.' And I'm like, 'It's JC.' And they're like, 'Shut the f--- up,' buggin' out."

It's easy to understand why BT's friends don't recognize the Chasez collaboration, which BT is concealing the title of to keep the details secret. The song is heavily influenced by the producer's trance background and is a far cry even from 'NSYNC's "Pop," which BT produced (see "BT Earns 'King Of Dirty Pop' Title With 'NSYNC, Britney Tracks").

BT first met the pop star two years ago when Chasez started showing up at his DJ shows. After forming a friendship, Chasez eventually asked him to work on Celebrity. Busy schedules kept BT from working on Justin Timberlake's solo effort, but he's set aside time next year to work on some cuts for Chasez's album with Alexander Greggs (Brandy, Aaron Carter).

"Alex has that whole R&B sh-- locked down. He gets that, and that's not my world," he said.

In the meantime, BT is putting the finishing touches on a proper follow-up to 2000's Movement in Still Life. Despite losing several tracks when his studio robbed in late 2001, the prolific BT had 42 finished tracks to choose from.

Twelve of the songs stood out, including collaborations with Peter Gabriel ("Our Loving Silence"), the Roots ("Tao of the Machine") and Gang Starr's Guru ("Knowledge Is Self") (see " 'Emotional' New Album, Korn Remixes, More Film Work For BT"). One epic number, "The Great Escape," features guitarist Richard Fortus (Guns N' Roses) on cello.

One song destined for the new LP, "Superfabulousness," is reminiscent of the Movement in Still Life single "Never Gonna Come Back Down" with Mike Doughty, but with an electroclash slant. It features vocals from Girls Against Boys singer Scott McCloud and actress Rose McGowan ("Scream," "Charmed").

"She totally can [sing]," BT said. "I think she sounds a bit like Shirley Manson."

Although it's packed with guest vocalists, the upcoming disc features several tracks sung by BT, who began experimenting with singing on his last album. One song he sings on, the album closer "Animals," samples recordings from deep sea scuba divers.

"I'm really proud of this song lyrically," BT said. "It's a metaphor for the human experience and just talking about how basically that's what we are — animals who can talk and have consciousness, so therefor feel so grandiose and self-important as to justify all different kinds of behavior."

BT's work in progress covers a wide range of emotions, from deeper reflections to party joints, but the DJ promised the album will make sense when you hear the songs in their correct order.

"I try to make records people can listen to from start to finish that encourage you to not, like, flip to track three," he explained. "This is a commitment. You can't read a book or watch TV while you listen to it."

Except for the inclusion of "Self Evident," a post-9/11 poem on Ani DiFranco's live double CD, So Much Shouting, So Much Laughter, this week's releases are steering clear from addressing the first anniversary of September 11, 2001 (see "Artists Debate Releasing Discs Near 9/11 Anniversary" ).

Aside from DiFranco, more girls with guitars who are issuing new albums are the Bangs (Call & Response) and anti-Ace of Base Swedes the Sahara Hotnights, whose Jennie Bomb is their first U.S. effort. Meanwhile, Lynda Stipe (sister of R.E.M.'s Michael) and her '80s band Oh-OK are rediscovered with The Complete Oh-OK, which features the early, early work of Matthew Sweet.

Former Arrested Development member Speech and former Pharcyde member Tre Hardson both try thei hands at solo efforts this week with Spiritual People and Liberation, respectively. And the Yohimbe Brothers, a duo made up of Vernon Reid of Living Colour and DJ Logic from Eye & I, release Front End Lifter, which reunites Reid with all of the original members of Living Colour and includes guest spots by Prince Paul and Slick Rick.

'Emotional' New Album, Korn Remixes, More Film Work For BT

After his studio was broken into in December and hundreds of recordings were stolen, electronic music architect BT had to take his upcoming album in a different direction.

"This is a very emotional album," BT said Sunday backstage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (see "Review: Bjork's Pit, Beck's Set Among Few Surprises At Risk-Free Coachella"). "I'm singing a lot on this album. The collaborations are with people I really care about, like Peter Gabriel and the Roots and Guru from Gang Starr. It's a really special record. I'm already proud of it and it's not done."

The still-untitled follow-up to 2000's Movement in Still Life would probably be released by now if not for the break-in, which crushed the normally sky-high spirits of the producer (see "BT's Collaborations With Sarah McLachlan, Peter Gabriel Stolen"). But BT said he has fully recovered and is feeling better than ever.

"I just re-centered myself and reminded myself that I am really fortunate to be able to do what I love for a living," he said. "There's got to be a reason some of the tracks disappeared into the ether, they must not have been meant to be heard. I just made peace with that."

Over the last few months BT has written several new songs, which his friends have told him are the best he has ever written.

"They're just really emotional, like on the tip of 'Satellite' from the last album," BT said. "They're sort of Sigur Rós, Radioheady type electronic-rock music. And the stuff that is more breakbeat-oriented, that stuff is particularly aggro. It's hard to describe, ... but it's starting to make sense as an album."

As for collaborations, BT said he lost the Sarah McLachlan track in the burglary and may not have a chance to re-record it. "Tao of the Machine," his song with the Roots, appeared on the "Blade 2" soundtrack earlier this year (see "Eve, Ice Cube, Redman Go Electronic For 'Blade 2' ") and will also show up on BT's album remixed and longer. And along with Guru, dance music luminaries Sasha and Paul van Dyk will make guest appearances, pleasing BT's longtime trance fans and retaining a bit of his signature sound.

"Stylistically, in terms of beats and things, even on the rock songs, I've been taking the aesthetic of proper techno stuff that I like, Autechre and Richie Hawtin, the really clippy-style computer-type beats, and mixing it with stuff like the hip-hop and R&B I listen to, like Timbaland."

"Our Loving Silence," the collaboration with Gabriel, features BT playing seven-string bass over "mental beats." "They sound like a typewriter with epilepsy," BT said. "It's kind of like world music meets Autechre, with Peter singing over the top of it."

BT said his work as producer in the pop world last year with 'NSYNC and Britney Spears has not influenced his own music ("There's not going to be dancing in my videos," he insists). The work did inspire BT to continue producing for other artists, and he has a major one lined up for the summer that he's keeping tight-lipped about.

Meanwhile, BT just finished remixing the new Korn single, "Here to Stay" (see "Korn's Jonathan Davis On New Video: 'This Is What Kids Are Taught' "). Korn's record label loved one of his versions but passed on the other.

"Jonathan [Davis] sounds like Timmy from 'South Park,' so I made it a duet," BT said, laughing. "The label said, 'Ah, no dude.' I'm playing that tonight, though!"

Also on BT's plate are two film scores, though he won't reveal the title of either one. His past projects have included "Go," "Under Suspicion," "Driven" and "The Fast and the Furious."

"I want to do an independent film, like something that's for the art of it, and then something I can write strings for a 120-piece orchestra for," BT said. "You can't do that on an independent. I get to use all of the classical training I learned as kid. I don't even get to use it on my own record, 'cause it's so cost-prohibitive. When I have done it, I'm like, 'Don't show me the bill!' "

Newly recorded collaborations with Peter Gabriel and Sarah McLachlan were among the items stolen from BT's home studio in late December, the electronic music guru revealed Tuesday.

Thieves broke into the DJ/producer's Los Angeles studio over Christmas while he was recording in London and made off with more than $75,000 worth of equipment, including computers storing 11 tracks for his upcoming album and hundreds of other recordings, he said.

"One of the FireWire hard drives that was stolen included my sound library since I was 15 years old," a shaken BT said. "It's a really heavy thing, a really hard thing to have happen when you are gone. The guys that work for me were crying over the phone — grown men crying. It was a really difficult blow to take, but it's made me more determined."

Since he returned from Europe, BT has recovered parts of half of the stolen songs, he said. He also learned from Gabriel on Tuesday that the British singer had saved a copy of most of their collaboration.

Re-recording the missing parts won't be easy, however. "It's going to be like remembering the lines in someone's forehead if you were painting them from memory," BT said.

One of the mixers stolen from BT's studio was once a part of a set. BT had the other half stolen shortly after moving to Los Angeles a few years ago.

"I've had such strange experiences here," he said. "Being in Los Angeles has been so positive on a career level for me, and at the same time I've been robbed and put in the trunk of a car, and now I've had my studio broken into."

BT said fortunately his most expensive and rare equipment was not in the studio that was burglarized. He also did not lose his collaboration with the Roots (see "BT Working With Roots, Sarah McLachlan On New LP"), and he said the material he was recording in England is some of the best stuff he has done for the album, which had been due in the spring but will likely be pushed back.

BT's McLachlan collaboration may not ever be heard, depending on the availability of the Canadian songstress or his luck in retrieving the stolen goods.

"I'll give a huge f---ing reward for my hard drives back," BT said. "That's all I care about. Anybody that can get them, they can keep everything else."

BT called his still-untitled track with Gabriel, which includes excerpts from their favorite poets, Pablo Neruda and Sylvia Plath, a "really beautiful piece of music." "It just gutted me thinking it was lost," he said.

BT, who gained notoriety outside the club scene last year by producing 'NSYNC's "Pop" (see "BT Earns 'King Of Dirty Pop' Title With 'NSYNC, Britney Tracks"), has been recording the follow-up to 2000's Movement in Still Life since last fall.

Despite the break-in, BT still performed at a giant street party in Los Angeles on New Year's Eve with Paul Oakenfold and Deep Dish (see "Paul Oakenfold, BT Throwing New Year's Block Party In L.A.").

"I considered not playing, but you know, that's something that makes me very happy, connecting with a bunch of people, and it was good for the spirit to do it," he said.

Two weeks ago, electronic music guru BT was dropping breakbeats. Today he's dealing with a break-in.

Thieves broke into the DJ/producer's Los Angeles home studio while he was in London for Christmas and made off with thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and new recordings.

A spokesperson said the artist had three weeks' worth of material on the computers that were taken. "It was mostly remixes," she said. "Nothing that can't be replaced."

BT, who gained notoriety outside the club scene last year by producing 'NSYNC's "Pop," has been recording his as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2000's Movement in Still Life since the fall. Peter Gabriel, Sarah McLachlan and the Roots are expected to make guest appearances on it (see "BT Working With Roots, Sarah McLachlan On New LP").

Electronic music stars Paul Oakenfold, BT and Deep Dish will headline a massive outdoor New Year's Eve party on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles.

The second annual Center of the Universe on Hollywood Boulevard will feature three stages showcasing those DJs and others, including Sander Kleinenberg, DJ Sneak and Marques Wyatt. BT, whose profile rose this year after producing 'NSYNC's "Pop" (see "BT Earns 'King Of Dirty Pop' Title With 'NSYNC, Britney Tracks"), will be performing a rare live set, according to organizers.

This year's event will be held on seven city blocks between Vine Street and Whitley Avenue and is expected to draw 20,000 people, twice the number who turned out for last year's Paul van Dyk-headlined festival.

Dance music promoters Spundae are hosting the event, and profits will be donated to local youth charities. Tickets are $80 and available at Ticketmaster outlets.

BT, who has been hard at work on his next album (see "BT Working With Roots, Sarah McLachlan On New LP"), said recently that more uplifting music should be recorded in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"The music I make has always been sort of positive," he said. "It's important to express a lot of different emotions in music, but if it's a constant anger, rage, and frowning and negativity, I just don't think people wanna hear that anymore. I'm starting to hear more Travis songs and Coldplay and good music [on the radio]. And hopefully that will keep happening."
