Stephen Gately, a member of the popular Irish boy band Boyzone, died on Saturday while vacationing on the Spanish island of Majorca. The group announced on its official Web site that Gately, 33, "tragically died" while visiting the island but did not offer any details on the cause of death.

Gately was with his partner, Andrew Cowles, at the time — they were married in a civil union in 2006 — and the singer's former bandmembers said on Saturday that they were traveling to Majorca to pay their respects.

"We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen," wrote Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Mikey Graham and Shane Lynch on the band's official Web site. "We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will miss you forever."

Boyzone were one of the most popular UK boy bands of the 1990s, nearly equaling Take That in a friendly rivalry that had shades of the 'NSYNC/ Backstreet Boys battle in the U.S. The group formed in 1993 through a newspaper ad looking for an Irish answer to Take That, initially gaining popularity with covers of songs by the Four Seasons, the Osmonds and the Bee Gees. They released a string of hit albums in the mid-'90s before splitting in 2000.

Along with in-demand producer/ songwriter Keating, Gately was one of the lead singers of the group, which scored six #1 singles in the UK in their prime with the songs "Words," "A Different Beat," "All That I Need," "No Matter What," "When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going" and "You Needed Me." Gately surprised the group's fans in 1999 by coming out as a gay man, becoming an outspoken supporter of gay rights.

The Dublin-born Gately released a solo album, New Beginning, in 2000 and starred in musicals and television programs following the group's dissolution. Boyzone reunited in 2007 for some appearances in England and were slated to release a new album next year. Just four days before his death, Gately tweeted, "Still busy, lots going on. Focussing on finishing my book next so may be quiet here." The singer was reportedly working on a children's fantasy novel called "The Tree of Seasons."

Though a cause of death has not yet been announced, a spokesperson for Gately's family called it a "tragic accident" and told BBC News that the singer died due to natural causes, that drugs and suicide were not factors, and that it's not believed he was murdered or died as a result of a fight. They have also denied reports that Gately died following an eight-hour drinking binge on the island. A postmortem is scheduled for Tuesday in Spain.

Pop icon Elton John, who was a friend and who introduced Gately to Cowles, told the BBC, "Stephen was the kindest, gentlest soul. We send our love and condolences to his partner, Andy, and to all his friends everywhere."

Boyzone's manager, Louis Walsh, was to appear alongside "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell on Cowell's UK talent show, "X Factor," on Saturday night, but pulled out due to Gately's death. Cowell paid tribute to the singer on the program, calling news of his death "really, really tragic" and sending his condolences to Gately's family.

Former New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander has finally resurfaced in the producer-songwriter position he disbanded his former group to pursue.

Alexander has co-written and produced a song called "Life Is A Rollercoaster" for the solo project by Ronan Keating, a member of the Irish boy band Boyzone.

According to the U.K. publication Dotmusic, "Life Is A Rollercoaster" will be released in Britain on July 10 as the lead single from Keating's solo album, tentatively titled "Ronan," which is being completed in a Los Angeles studio this week.

The five-member group Boyzone, a huge draw overseas, is perhaps best known on these shores for appearing alongside U2 for "The Sweetest Thing" and making a white-suited cameo appearance in the video.

Alexander suddenly disbanded New Radicals last summer after band logged a hit single, "You Get What You Give," off its debut (and only) album, "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too" (see "Free Radicals: Gregg Alexander Disbands New Radicals"). Alexander, the only permanent member of the band, issued a statement that said in part that he was "more interested in being the next Mutt Lange than a performer."

Since that time, the only news from Alexander has been the quiet release earlier this year of an album by former child star Danielle Brisebois, a close associate of Alexander's and a part-time member of New Radicals.

Boyzone singer Shane Lynch was shaken and stirred -- but not seriously injured -- after crashing his car during the Enterprise National Rally near the Neath Valley in south Wales on Saturday.
Lynch was traveling at 100 mph when his two-man Ford Ka car skidded and overturned after hitting a patch of gravel, according to reports from the British Press Association.
The accident occurred during mile 17 of the Rally's 75-mile route, and both Lynch and co-driver emerged unscathed from the vehicle, which a spokesman for Ford says flipped over when the car slid into a ditch and struck a tree log.
"It was a learning experience," Lynch told the Press Association. "My position was not the best. We came off the tire track and just drifted into the loose."
In spite of the wreck, Lynch was back driving the same Ford Ka that was involved in the crash later that same day, following minor structural repairs to the car's bumper, roof, and doors.

While U2 continues work on its next album, the group's friends in Boyzone are apparently eyeing Bono to play a major supporting role in a film about the Irish boy band.
According to MTV Europe, Boyzone plans on making a film about the group that would be similar to the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" (a movie also aped by the Spice Girls in its critically savaged 1997 film "Spice World") and wants Bono to play the group's manager.
Boyzone previously hooked up with Bono last year when it made a cameo appearance in the video for U2's most recent single, "The Sweetest Thing" (see "Boyzone Talks About Jumping On Board 'Sweetest' U2 Video").
No word yet on when the planned Boyzone feature film might start shooting, but we'll keep you posted.

Heartthrob vocalist Stephen Gately of the Irish boy band Boyzone has revealed to London tabloid "The Sun" that he is gay.
Gately, 23, told "The Sun" that he's in a committed relationship with longtime boyfriend Eloy de Jong of the defunct Dutch boy band Caught in the Act, and that he decided to come out on his own because he was threatened with being outed in the press by a former employee.
"I think the time has come to be honest and tell everyone that I am gay," the singer disclosed in his statement. "I owe it to all Boyzone fans. I'm not ashamed of coming out like this, my family and friends have known for a long time."
Gately also told "The Sun" that he had kept his sexuality a secret when he first joined the group, and that acknowledging his orientation has finally given him the freedom to be himself.
The other four members of Boyzone, whose newest U.K. album "By Request" is currently at the top of the Brit charts, have publicly supported their bandmate in his decision to
come out.
The Irish boy band is currently featured on the "Notting Hill" soundtrack with the song "No Matter What." Idolized by millions of young fans all over the world, Boyzone hasn't yet managed to take off in America with the same success as American peers such as 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

Boyzone singer Ronan Keating has become the latest pop star to contribute to the industry's recent baby boom, as Keating and wife Yvonne gave birth to a boy, which the couple have named Jack, on Monday evening in Dublin, Ireland.
Jack weighed in at a healthy 10 pounds, and according to MTV News Europe, arrived more than a week later than expected. Doctors had told the Keatings to expect the child, the couple's first, on or around March 3, the same date as Ronan's 22nd birthday (and the day before Posh Spice Victoria Adams gave birth to her own baby boy).
According to a statement released by Ronan, both Yvonne and the child were doing well, and may join the singer and the rest of Boyzone for some of the band's promotional dates in the U.S. next month.
Boyzone had its most recent album, "Where We Belong," released in America late last year, but is probably most familiar to audiences in the states for the band's cameo in the U2 video, .

Boyzone is Ireland's contribution to the proliferating number of cute-guy singing groups on the pop scene right now, but with their own unique twist, as the group is able to write and produce their own material, and have been scoring hits in Europe for the past three years.
The vocal quintet is hoping for a U.S. breakthrough with its latest album, "Where We Belong," but Boyzone can also be seen with fellow Dubliners U2 on the video for that group's remix single, "The Sweetest Thing" [28.8 RealVideo], which is featured on the new "Best of U2" compilation.
It turns out that U2 originally offered the song to Boyzone, but the group declined to use it on its record, even though they did cut their own version of "The Sweetest Thing."
"We recorded the song and matched it up with the other songs on the album," Boyzone's Ronan Keating told MTV News' John Norris,
"But you did end up in their video anyway?" Norris asked.
"They just approached us," answered Stephen Gately.
"Tell the truth, Steven," prodded Keith Duffy, "we were just walking around town one day and we happened to be wearing white suits, the whole lot of us. B*witched is in, the Spice girls are out and All Saints are way out, according to Smash Hits magazine, considered the pop bible for Britain.
In the publication's annual awards poll celebrated yesterday in London, B*Witched won for Best Newcomer while The Spice Girls were reduced to a lowly 'Best Haircut' nod for Posh Spice Victoria Adams, coupled with Worst Video ("Viva Forever") and Worst Film ("Spice World").
All Saints didn't earn so much as a mention from the podium, but nonetheless the group was the talk of the night for pulling out of their commitment to perform their new single at the live show Sunday amid rumors that Nicole Appleton had left the band. The official excuse given was that the singer was ill. The band later released a statement that appeared to confirm that the girls had a tiff, but made no mention of a split. (see "All Saints Break, But No Break-up").
Meanwhile sixteen-year old budding pop star Billie
topped three categories -- Princess of Pop, Best Female Solo Star and Best Dressed Female. But that was offset when she won four 'worst' categories -- Worst Female Singer, Worst Single, Worst Album and "Sad Loser of 1998."
. For the most part, however, it was the boys night out. Irish band Boyzone took six awards including Best Band on Planet while fellow boyband 5ive, formed by the same team that gave us the Spice Girls, were deemed the Best British Band. Not all the boys did well, however. Hanson were voted the worst group.

U2 returned to the MTV airwaves Monday with the premiere of "Sweetest Thing," the band's latest video for a track from its upcoming greatest hits compilation.
As we previously reported (see "U2 Joined By Boyzone For 'Sweetest Thing' Video"), the clip for the song features fellow Irish music posters Boyzone, although the vocal group does not actually turn up on the song.
"U2: the Best of 1980 to 1990," the band's first greatest hits collection, features well-known gems like "Pride (In the Name of Love)," "With or Without You," and "Sunday Bloody Sunday." The album also carries "Sweetest Thing," a b-side that frontman Bono wrote for his wife Ally more than a decade ago.
"It was written during the album sessions for 'The Joshua Tree,'" Bono explained,
Longtime U2 fans may recognize the young man on cover of the upcoming compilation. It's Peter, the younger brother of a friend of the band whose photo graces the covers of two of the band's earliest efforts, "Boy" and "War."

As U2 readies its new greatest hits album, "U2 The Best of 1980-1990," for a November 3 release, the band was in Dublin last week to shoot a video for its new single, "The Sweetest Thing," and were joined on the set by the Irish pop group, Boyzone.
The teen-idol vocal group have also laid down vocals for the updated version of "Sweetest Thing," a song Bono told MTV Europe he wrote during the sessions for "The Joshua Tree" album after he forgot his wife's birthday.
As we previously reported (see "Boyzone Poised For U.S. Success"), Boyzone have just signed a deal with Mercury Records after reaching Backstreet Boys-type success in the U.K., as all of the Zone's past 12 singles have charted in the Top 5.
