Black Eyed Peas, Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men, Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean are teaming up to raise money for tsunami victims by throwing a concert in a nation within the devastated region: Malaysia. Organizers hope that the Force of Nature concert reminds people not only that the relief effort is far from over, but also that a bigger power than the tsunami could be the human spirit.

"Sometimes things are about money, and sometimes things are about building communities, reconstructing, restoring people's ways of life that were taken away from them by nature," Will.I.Am said.

"Think about a little kid, 4 years old, whose parents were in the tsunami. He doesn't understand what's going on," Fergie said. "This child is going to need help; this child is going to need nurturing, just like every other child is going to need. We need to do something to help fund programs so that these children can get through life."

The concert, which will take place March 18 at Kuala Lumpur's Stadium Putra, springs from a local nonprofit organization called Force of Nature Aid Organization, which is raising funds and awareness for victims of natural disasters. Since this concert is being underwritten by a consortium of Malaysian private enterprises, 100 percent of the proceeds from the show will go toward the long-term regeneration of Malaysia's neighbors. On the committee to spread the word are Jackie Chan, Michelle Yeoh and Harvey Weinstein.

Tsunami Relief: What You Can Do To Help

This isn't the first benefit that Black Eyed Peas have played for tsunami relief (see "Peas, Timberlake And James Brown Get Funky For Tsunami Relief"), but the group said that it is involved — and will stay involved — because it remembers how many people pitched in to help America after September 11. "We know what that's like to have fear: 'Oh my God, what is tomorrow going to bring?' " Taboo explained. "To express that, to connect to people who have that fear, but of nature, we just share sympathy for them. We feel a lot of remorse that they lost a lot of people, and so we do what we do and try to create some magic."

"We believe in aiding people in need and utilizing what we do for a living and for fun to help people out," Will.I.Am said.

"When you perform, you can take them away for an hour of their life to think about something else," Apl de Ap said. "We have the power to deliver a message, to change, to bring help. It's a good power."

Snoop Doggy Dogg took to the silver screen this week in 1994 thanks to the
rapper's mentor, Dr. Dre. The good doctor directed an 18-minute mini movie
starring Snoop based on the track "Murder Was the Case" from the
Dogg's debut album, Doggystyle. The violent short film found Snoop
addressing his own mortality.

"I decided to put me a video together somewhat like [Michael Jackson's] 'Thriller' but with one of my songs," Snoop explained. "So I took 'Murder Was the Case' 'cause it was the most visual song and we stretched it out and made it into an 18-minute video and it's real deep. It's like rated R. It's uncut. It's real. It's me."

Snoop made a point of noting, however, that the video was not a dramatization of what was going on in his own life at that time (the rapper was on trial for the murder of 20-year-old Phillip Woldemariam; he was ultimately acquitted).

"It's non-affiliated with my case that's going on, so I wanna make that known," Snoop stressed. "This song was wrote before the case even occurred."

Madonna had the hottest single in the country with "Secret," which leapt from #30 to #4 on the Billboard singles chart. To keep the song hot in dance clubs, Madonna turned the tune over to one of New York's hottest remixers, Junior Vasquez, DJ at the Sound Factory.

"They sent me a cassette of the song, just to get an idea what the song was," Junior Vasquez said of the original mid-tempo cut, "and when it was 100 beats per minute I said, 'Oh god, what am I gonna do with this?' "

Before tackling the club mixes, Junior and his engineers experimented with versions truer to the original. Then, in a move that had become commonplace, Junior wrote and produced all new music for the club mixes, only utilizing Madonna's original vocals for the final product.

"I knew I was gonna do the house thing, but I knew right away we'd have to speed up the vocals," he said.

"To do that we have to digitally manipulate her vocals, which is time compression," engineer P. Dennis Mitchell explained. "It just digitally goes in and snipes out tiny little digital slices of the actual sound and squeezes it together so that her tempo is a new tempo but her pitch stays the same."

"Isn't that weird?" Vasquez asked. "She sounds exactly the same but she's singing faster.

"Madonna's different 'cause she's like really on top of everything," he added. "The house mix is just as important to her as what her original interpretation of the song is."

The hip-hop/ doo-wop vocal group Boyz II Men took time off from topping the charts with their hit single "I'll Make Love to You" to do some clothes shopping in New York City. MTV News tagged along and eventually figured out the connection between the group and Alex Vanderpool, the character on the soap opera "All My Children" for whom the group's Nate Morris had taken his nickname.

Shawn Stockman: We're just gonna show everybody what the Alex Vanderpool type of dress is about.

Nate Morris: Alex is a laid-back, chilled-out type of vibe.

Shawn Stockman: It's all about being comfortable on and offstage and that's what Alex is about.

Michael McCary: If they had four of these [shirts] in extra large we would buy them. Or four of these in extra large, the same identical shirt, we would buy them. It shows unity. Nobody sticks out or stands out more than the other.

Wanya Morris: For somebody else [these platform sneakers] might be fly, but I can't vibe off of these.

Shawn Stockman: It's just the extra like, three feet of heel that kind of throws the vibe off.

Reggae vocalist Shaggy was rocketing up the Billboard pop chart with his rap- tinged hit "Boombastic" this week in 1995. U.S. success was the final frontier for Shaggy, who topped the charts in Canada and Europe in 1993 with the song "Oh Carolina." Born in Jamaica, Shaggy relocated to Brooklyn, New York, as a teenager, earning his nickname in junior high for the wild hair he had then. After high school he enlisted in the Marines because it was the one job from which he could not get fired, he said.

"A lot of people look at combat as this real rough and tough thing," Shaggy said about his time spent on active duty in the Gulf War. "I mean, there were scary moments and there were fun moments. Most of the time it was just relax. The military is like hurry up and wait. For the whole five months that I was [in the Gulf] we only fought three days of war. The rest was just moving from point A to point B."

While he served in the Gulf, the music Shaggy had recorded prior to enlisting was making an impact in New York City dance halls and eventually reached armed forces radio.

"I heard one of my songs over there," Shaggy said. "I'm giving it to the guys, like, 'Hey, listen to this, this is my song, man.' They were like, 'humna-humna-humna crap again.' They always teased me. They called me the 'humna-humna kid' 'cause they couldn't understand anything I was saying. I guess they never thought I'd be at the top of the chart one day, but hey, neither did I."

Brandy joined up with Wanya Morris of Boyz II Men back in '95 for a duet version of "Brokenhearted," a song from her self-titled debut album.

"I went on tour with Boyz II Men, and we always talked about doing a duet," Brandy said.

"I was on the airplane on the way to another city and Brandy was there," Wanya Morris said. "I was listening to her album on the plane and I was like, 'Yo, we should do a duet of 'Brokenhearted.' "

MTV News went behind the scenes on the set of the video, where we found that a dreamy look can require a lot of unglamorous work. The clip was based on a daydream, and the setting was still a bit beyond reality for 16-year-old Brandy.

"It's basically a dream, because of course this is not reality," Brandy said. "I can't afford a mansion right now, so it's like I fall asleep and I dream about doing a duet with Wanya and I'm in this big mansion wearing these grown clothes, big beautiful Whitney Houston-type clothes.

"What people do not know about making a video is [that it can make you] very, very stressed out," she continued. "I'm very tired right now. You can't really tell because I'm 16 and I have a lot of energy, but it's stress. It's hard work. I mean, you have to do stuff over and over and over and over again."

Brandy had also just taped the pilot for her TV show "Moesha," where she played a teenager who's father had just remarried.

Mariah Carey had recently finished her first stab at video directing, on her own clip for "Fantasy," from her album Daydream. The video was shot at Rye Playland in New York, the vintage art deco amusement park where the Tom Hanks movie "Big" was also filmed. Carey, who roller-bladed and rode a roller coaster in the clip, was joined in it by Wu-Tang Clan rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard, who rapped on a hip-hop remix of the song.

With smash hits like "End of the Road" and "I'll Make Love to You" under
their matching belts, the guys of Boyz II Men can afford to take a gamble.
So MTV News' Chris Connelly caught up with the Motownphilly high rollers on
a recent trip to Las Vegas, where they were hurting street signs with their
van and getting hurt in the pocket by roulette.

Connelly: Why are you betting all on twenties? Is it your age or the number
of records?

Shawn Stockman: I tell you, we've sold about 25 million records. I'm 25
years old, so I did 25 red. Twenty-six, I'll be 26 on the 26th of September
of this year.

The Boyz lost their shirts at roulette, but it wasn't until they stopped at
a nearby wedding chapel that the group learned what busted in Vegas really
meant.

Connelly: Gentlemen, what do you think happened here? This is your van here?

Wanya Morris: It's not my van.

Shawn Stockman: Not ours, and that's for the record.

Connelly: Isn't that just like you guys. Some guys wreck hotel rooms when
they're on tour. You guys ...

Michael McCary: We wreck clearance signs.

Being the hopeless romantics that they are, Boyz II Men stuck around and
sang "Can You Stand the Rain" to a couple of newlyweds. Then they offered
some unsolicited advice to the men in their audience. Guys, if you come to a
Boyz II Men show and the group starts throwing flowers from the stage, let
the ladies have them.

Shawn Stockman: We'll throw a flower, and it's going in the air and it's
going, and all of a sudden you see this athletic brother just coming out of
nowhere, stretch his had out and go, "Rooaaarrr." You be like, "Aww, man."
So fellas, please don't take the flowers from the girls. Let the girls have
them. It's OK.

Singer/songwriter Jewel was striving to be recognized as
singer/songwriter/poet Jewel this week in 1998. Known for her yodely
folk-pop styling, she had just published a book of poems called "A Night
Without Armor."

Jewel: Poetry's my therapy. It's my process when I'm hurt in a relationship,
when I'm bitter and when I start to recover and when I start to want to love
again. You see the process in poetry. Songwriting doesn't really tend to
reflect that. The process is detailed, which is nice and is actually one of
the things I liked about putting the book out. People can know me more
directly and sincerely than as an image of a pop star or something. I did
begin to feel fearful that people could consume me without ever knowing what
I tasted like. People would take the image and believe that I was raised by
wolves in Alaska. "Foolish Games" actually came from some different poems I
put together, but it's actually kind of rare. This tends to be more
autobiographical, the book. I tried to, you know, when I compiled the book,
to be as holistic as I could, to put in really passionate, sensual poems,
love poems as well as bitter. ... I almost published anonymously, except it
kind of defeated a lot of purposes, so I decided to take the brunt of a lot
of hits and just be as honest as I could and as good as I could.

The Wu-Tang Clan's Inspectah Deck was busy preparing to release a solo album
back in 1998, and despite all the work that came along with that
responsibility, he thoroughly enjoyed the freedom that came from calling all
the shots on Uncontrolled Substance.

Inspectah Deck: Just how I feel right here in front of this [studio
equipment] is like flying the Enterprise. ... It feels like the Starfleet
commander right now 'cause the steering wheel's in my hand, you know, and
all I'm doing is running with it.

Before your family dishes out the big bird and all its trimmings this Thanksgiving, many artists will be serving up some musical munchies on television to whet your appetite. And be sure to save room for dessert after the sun goes down, since late-night programs also have some sweet sounds lined up.

Pop, R&B and country are on the menu for the 75th annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, with performances by O-Town, Boys II Men, Joey McIntyre and Usher slated to take place atop floats cruising down Central Park West and Broadway in midtown Manhattan, according to a Macy's spokesperson. Tony Bennett, Charlotte Church, Billy Gilman, Kenny G, Jon Secada and LMNT (three O-Town finalists that didn't make the cut) round out the musical lineup for the event, which will be broadcast live on NBC from 9 a.m. to noon.

Country is the predominant genre of CBS's "All-American Thanksgiving Parade," a compilation of highlights from the Macy's parade as well as holiday marches in Nashville and Detroit. Lee Ann Womack and Ray Stevens lead the musical charge in Nashville, while Lee Greenwood tops the roster in Detroit, according to a CBS spokesperson. The special, airing from 9 a.m. to noon, will also visit Nashville's Grand Ole Opry House for performances by Vince Gill and Brad Paisley.

After the parades, Enrique Iglesias will be among the halftime entertainment at the Detroit Lions-Green Bay Packers game, which begins at 12:30 p.m. ET The late game, the Dallas Cowboys versus the Denver Broncos, will feature Creed as its halftime fanfare (see "Creed, Enrique Iglesias To Perform At Thanksgiving Games").

If you're still awake after the turkey's sleep-inducing amino acid L-tryptophan takes effect, you can catch U2 on a live broadcast of NBC's "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" at 11:35 p.m. ET, according to a network spokesperson. The program will be broadcast to U.S. servicemen and women stationed in 175 countries and aboard 150 Navy ships via the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service.

U2 will also be the subject of a CNN profile during the cable channel's "People in the News" program, which is scheduled to air at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger will provide lip service to the "Good Morning America" crew on ABC at 7 a.m., more than a half-day away from "Being Mick," a one-hour special on the classic rocker that airs on the same network at 10 p.m. and features interviews with Wyclef Jean, Elton John, Lenny Kravitz, Pete Townshend, U2 and the Who, an ABC spokesperson said (see "Rolling Stones To Roll Out 40th Anniversary Tour").

Later in evening, Ben Folds will appear on NBC's "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" at 12:35 a.m., while Leona Naess visits "The Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn" at 12:37 a.m.

Mariah Carey, Ricky Martin, Tom Petty, Carlos Santana, Celine Dion and Shakira have joined Michael Jackson in asking "What More Can I Give" on a benefit single for September 11 relief efforts.

Also new to the lineup, according to an announcement from Jackson's publicist on Wednesday (October 17), are: Gloria Estefan, Usher, Julio Iglesias, Reba McEntire, Luther Vandross, Brian McKnight, Aaron Carter, Jon Secada, Billy Gilman, Boyz II Men's Shawn Stockman, Alejandro Sanz, Christian Castro, Olga Tañón, Juan Gabriel, Luis Miguel, Thalía, Ziggy Marley and 3LW.

Previously announced contributors include Destiny's Child, Backstreet Boys' Nick Carter and Mya. Lovebirds Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were also named as participants when plans were first announced, but there was no mention of them in the latest update. A source close to the project said the two were never confirmed.

"What More Can I Give" will be released in both English and Spanish versions. It was unclear which artists will appear on which one. Jackson penned the song and is producing the English version, while KC Porter is overseeing production of the Spanish rendition. A release date has not been announced.

Jackson has been flying to studios around the country to record with the stars, according to his publicist. Santana recorded his guitar part in San Francisco with Porter last week, while other sessions have taken place in New York and Los Angeles.

The enigmatic pop legend has said he hopes the single will raise $50 million. "I believe in my heart that the music community will come together as one and rally to the aid of thousands of innocent victims," Jackson said in a statement. "There is a tremendous need for relief dollars right now, and through this effort each one of us can play an immediate role in helping comfort so many people."

In 1985, Jackson, Quincy Jones, Lionel Richie and Harry Belafonte led a group of artists in recording "We Are the World," which benefited famine-relief efforts in Ethiopia.
