Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch Feels 'Hopeful' About Cancer Treatment

Three months since he revealed he was suffering from cancer of the salivary gland, Beastie Boy Adam Yauch wrote in a message to fans this week that after undergoing treatment and surgery, he's feeling healthy.

Yauch, 45, said he just returned from a trip to Dharamsala, India, where he had traveled to see some Tibetan doctors and ended up attending a three-day teaching from Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.

"I'm feeling healthy, strong and hopeful that I've beaten this thing, but of course time will tell," wrote Yauch, who recently underwent surgery to remove a cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland. "I'm taking Tibetan medicine and at the recommendation of the Tibetan doctors I've been eating a vegan/organic diet, which surprisingly enough was harder to do in India than it is now that I'm back home. Here I can just shop for the right food and cook ... a lot easier than depending on restaurants."

Yauch announced on July 20 that the discovery of the cancer would necessitate the canceling of all of the Beasties' planned summer-festival appearances and push back their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, while he underwent treatment. According to a band spokesperson, because the cancer was discovered early and localized in an area that will not affect Yauch's vocal cords, it is believed the surgery was successful. Hot Sauce Committee has not yet been rescheduled.

In addition to attending the Dalai Lama event and consulting with Tibetan doctors, Yauch said he also visited a nunnery called Jamyang Choling. "They did a Puja (religious ceremony) for me to help me get well," he said. "One nun said to me, 'We do prayers and then you are better.' So I've got that going for me, which is nice."

With the Beastie Boys out of the picture due to Adam Yauch's cancer, the title of main attraction was up for grabs on the final day of the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival in San Francisco.

Tenacious D, Jack Black and Kyle Gass' jokey acoustic metal duo, replaced the Beasties as the main-stage headliner on Sunday night, but it wasn't entirely clear if the majority of people who showed up in Golden Gate Park were there to see the D (even despite the chants of "We want D!" prior to their set). The band appeared to have a sense of humor about its fill-in status, selling a shirt at the festival that spoofed the Beastie Boys' Check Your Head album cover and warned, "Check Your Headliner."

Audience members particularly fond of phallus and Satan jokes — or maybe just the ones who saw Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny — would probably go ahead and give the "main attraction" honor to the headliners, who were playing two days after Black's 40th birthday. In addition to performing songs like "Tribute," "Wonderboy" and "F--- Her Gently," the duo (which had an ace backing band behind them) acted out several skits, including one that played on Black's recent milestone and featured a stunt double doing flips and cartwheels. (Gass then temporarily quit the band when Black wouldn't admit to the crowd that he wasn't actually responsible for the athletic feats.) Black's best stunt of the night was all his own, however, when he closed the night by stripping down to his underwear and throwing his shirt and pants into the audience.

A few vocal audience members during Band of Horses' set at the nearby Sutro stage definitely gave their votes to frontman Ben Bridwell and company, offering up chants of "Main stage! Main stage!" during the hourlong set. The group's countrified indie rock was downright explosive, and Bridwell seemed to be just as impressed with the performance as his fans were. Sporting lots of hair and beards, the South Carolina outfit tore through an excellent selection of songs from 2006's Everything All the Time — including Outside Lands' unofficial theme song, "Weed Party" — and 2007's Cease to Begin, as well as a cover of Gram Parsons' "A Song for You."

Plenty of fans of would have also awarded the highlight crown to the Dead Weather, Jack White's stunningly cool quartet that also includes singer Alison Mosshart from the Kills. Buoyed by White's muscular guitar-playing and a crack set of tunes from their recently released debut, Horehound, the band tore through their set with reckless abandon while still looking cool. It helped that even though they played in the middle of the afternoon, the cloud cover and slight chill from the Bay breeze turned the festival's second-largest stage into a dangerous after-hours juke joint. The climax had little to do with the songs, as the group took a brief moment to jam while Mosshart sultrily smoked a cigarette sitting on the side of the stage. Nobody indulged in a vice with more rock and roll swagger better all weekend than the Dead Weather's singer.

Speaking of swagger, M.I.A. had a convincing campaign judging from the bodies convulsing during her bass-heavy workout on the main stage. Modest Mouse had a much harder sell earlier in the day, when they delivered a set that leaned closer to band favorites rather than fan favorites and included almost no banter from enigmatic leader Isaac Brock. It's a formula that Modest Mouse has used in the past in festival settings, but it's difficult to tell if the band is being contrarian or if adamantly playing by its own rules is a survival technique. Either way, it meant that megahit "Float On" was nowhere to be found, though songs like "The View," "Dramamine" and "Paper Thin Walls" sounded good on the big speakers.

It's safe to assume nobody shelled out a hundred bucks just to see Matt & Kim play the Panhandle stage at 3 in the afternoon, but the Brooklyn duo certainly performed as if most of the people watching them did. With beach balls and audience members bouncing, Matt Johnson and Kim Schifino spent most of their 40 minutes smiling and blasting through their keys-and-drums songs, slowing down only to explain why drummers shouldn't wear big earrings and asking the sun to come out so their solar-powered stage wouldn't run out of juice. Schifino even crowd-surfed before she and Johnson closed their set with a low-fi cover of Europe's "The Final Countdown" and their own "Daylight," which recently received some good airtime thanks to Bacardi.

In addition to the music, the second-annual Outside Lands — which is produced in part by Superfly Productions, the same folks behind Bonnaroo — offered plenty of other diversions, including a salon, pitching and batting cages, the Today Is So Yesterday Lounge featuring an oxygen bar, and a "Beatles Rock Band" lounge. And it being the Bay area and all, there was a wine tent and food options included heirloom watermelon, soju cocktails and portobello skewers offered by local businesses. All that combined with 72 hours worth of experimental rock, crowd-pleasing pop and euphoric R&B made for three days worth of San Francisco-style bliss.

Last month, Beastie Boy Adam "MCA" Yauch shocked fans by announcing that he has cancer, and that he would begin receiving treatment immediately to combat the disease, resulting in the cancellation of the group's scheduled concert appearances and a delay in the release of their next album.

Early Wednesday (August 5) morning — at 3:07 a.m. ET — in an e-mail with the subject line "What I did over my summer vacation," Yauch updated fans on his treatment (calling it, at one point, "torture,") and thanking them for their support while he recovers from surgery. Yauch has cancer in his parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat; doctors are optimistic that he will make a full recovery.

"So I'm about a week-and-a-half out of surgery now and rapidly recovering from it. I haven't taken any of the pain meds, which supposedly speeds along the healing process, or should I say, taking them slows it down," he wrote in the e-mail, which was sent to subscribers of the Beastie Boys' newsletter. "I spent one night at the hospital after the surgery ... The hospital was too crazy to get any rest so I headed home to relax, have home cooked food and hang out with the family.

"I'm pretty well detoxed from the anesthesia that they pumped me up with to keep me under for all that time," he continued. "My neck and jaw are still pretty stiff from the surgery, but it gets better everyday. Had the stitches out this past Monday ... so things are moving along."

Yauch said that the next step in his recovery process is to begin receiving localized radiation therapy.

"But no sooner am I on the mend from this first torture than are they lining up the next one," he wrote. "The next line of treatment will be radiation ... that involves blasting you with some kind of beam for a few minutes a day, five days a week, for about seven weeks. That will start in a few weeks."

He also took a moment to say thanks to the artists who paid tribute to him at the All Points West Festival last weekend. The Beasties were scheduled to headline the festival on Friday before canceling due to Yauch's surgery;
Jay-Z performed in their place.

"Saw the Jay-Z cover of [the Beastie's] 'No Sleep [Till Brooklyn]', and the Coldplay one of 'Fight For Your Right [To Party]' from APW on YouTube. Good sh--," he wrote. "And I heard Karen O [of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs] wore a 'Get well MCA' armband, and that Q-tip gave a shout out too ... very kind of them."

Yauch concluded the e-mail with thanks to his fans, who he credits with helping get him through the early stages of his cancer treatment.

"Just wanted to thank them and everyone else who sent positive thoughts my way," he wrote. "I do think that all of the well wishes have contributed to the fact that my treatment and recovery are going well. ... Much love back at all of you!"

Jay-Z has been tapped to replace the Beastie Boys at the All Points West festival in New Jersey.

The Beasties announced on Monday that they would be canceling all of their upcoming shows and pushing back the release of their new album, Hot Sauce Committee, Part One, in order to let Yauch take a breather and receive treatment for cancer in his parotid gland, a salivary gland in the throat. In addition to Lolla and APW, the cancellations by the hip-hop trio include a headlining slot at the Osheaga Fest in Montreal and another at the Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco; those events have not yet announced replacement headliners.

The addition of Jay to the APW lineup presents a potentially intriguing opportunity for the veteran MC to win over a rock audience by unveiling his collaboration with psychedelic rockers MGMT, who are slated to appear on his upcoming The Blueprint 3 album, according to a Reuters report. They join a reported list of collaborators that already includes Mr. Hudson, Rihanna, Drake and Kid Cudi. A spokesperson for Jay told MTV News that they could not confirm any of the potential collaborators at press time because the track listing for the album has not yet been confirmed.

APW organizers are offering refunds at the point of purchase for any July 31 single-day ticket holders wanting their money back in light of the Beasties' cancellation.

When the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch announced Monday that he had cancer and the Beasties would be canceling all upcoming tour dates and pushing back the release of their Hot Sauce Committee, Part One album, it came as a shock not just to fans, but to concert promoters too.

The Beastie Boys had been scheduled to headline four summer festivals — next weekend's All Points West in New Jersey; the Osheaga Fest (August 1-2 in Montreal); Lollapalooza (August 7-9 in Chicago); and the Outside Lands Festival (August 28-30 in San Francisco) — and the announcement left each event with a gaping hole to fill atop the bill.

So what does the Beasties' cancellation mean for each festival? Have promoters been inundated with refund requests from fans gearing up to see Yauch and company? And who will they secure to replace the band in the headlining slot?

MTV News attempted to contact representatives for each of the festivals but have yet to receive answers from any of them. A spokesperson for All Points West replied in an e-mail that they were "checking in" to our inquiry and would be in touch. E-mails and phone calls to the Gillett Entertainment Group — the Canadian promoters behind Osheaga — were not returned, but on Monday, the company issued a statement saying it is "exploring all options" for replacing the Beasties and urged fans to "please hold on to [their] tickets until further notice."

A spokesperson for Superfly Presents — which handles Outside Lands — did not respond to an e-mail, but like Osheaga, organizers for the festival posted a brief message online sending their thoughts to Yauch and his family and promising that updated information about the lineup would be forthcoming.

On Tuesday (July 21), C3 Presents, the Texas-based concert promoters behind Lollapalooza, announced that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were stepping in to the Beasties' Saturday night slot. C3 partner Charlie Jones told the Chicago Tribune that the loss of the Beasties hadn't caused the festival to see an increase in refund requests: "People buy Lollapalooza tickets for the overall event, the overall experience. With the number of bands playing, the price is worth it."

The Beastie Boys had also been announced to headline the annual Austin City Limits festival in October, and while no replacement has been announced for them just yet, there are reports that the Kings of Leon — who were already announced as one of the fest's headliners — were going to pull double duty, playing a second headline slot in place of the Beasties. However, a spokesperson for ACL told MTV News that those reports were false: "We have not announced a replacement for the Beastie Boys yet."

In his message to fans, Yauch apologized "to anyone who's made plans or [was] psyched to come to these shows that are coming up," but promised that the Beastie Boys will "be back doing this soon." He also said he would begin treatment "probably next week."

A spokesperson for the Beasties told MTV News that he didn't know when Yauch's treatment would begin, and said that, for now, the group's upcoming Hot Sauce album is saddled with a "TBD" release date.

In a video posted Monday (July 20) on BeastieBoys.com, Adam "MCA" Yauch announced that he has cancer and the group is canceling all upcoming shows (and pushing back the release of their Hot Sauce Committee, Part One album) while he receives treatment for it.

"The reason we're here talking is because I have some pretty heavy news to say," Yauch said in the video. "About two months ago, I started feeling this little lump in my throat, like what you would feel if you have swollen glands or something like that... and so I didn't really think it was anything. But then recently, when we were over in Europe doing promotion, I started to think that I should talk to my doctor, so I ... saw him when I got back, and he sent me to a specialist. They did tests, and I actually have a form of cancer in the gland that's over here, in the parotid gland, and it's also in the lymph node right in that area."

The parotid is the largest of the salivary glands. It is wrapped about the mandible bone and aides in chewing and swallowing by secreting saliva.

Flanked by bandmate Ad-Rock, Yauch said that he's going to have surgery and begin radiation with the next week, and while the news sounds dire, doctors are optimistic that he should make a full recovery.

"The good news is, they did scans of my whole body and it's only localized in this one area, and it's not in a place that affects my voice, so ... that's nice. That's convenient," he laughed. "So it's a little bit of a setback — it's a pain in the ass — but this is something that's very treatable, and in most cases ... they're able to completely get rid of it, and people don't have continuing problems with it, and they've caught it early and it's not anywhere else in my body. So, that's the good news."

Yauch concluded the video message by apologizing to all Beastie Boys fans for having to cancel the groups' upcoming shows — including headlining slots at the All Points West festival on July 31 and Lollapalooza on August 8 — and joking that his illness will give Ad-Rock time to work on his Kenny Rogers-themed country band.

"This will be a great opportunity," he laughed. "You'll have some time now. This is going to be big."

EMI, the Beastie Boys' label, released a statement confirming the news. "Our thoughts, love and prayers are with Adam Yauch, his family and the Beastie Boys," the statement said. "The most important thing is to allow Adam to focus on staying healthy. We wish him all the best and a speedy recovery."

Well, now we know all six. Last month, after four of this year's Lollapalooza headliners were revealed, event founder Perry Farrell told MTV News that he wasn't stressed by the premature leakage ... after all, he still had a pair of big-name bill-toppers to announce, and late Monday he did just that — and then some.

Farrell unveiled the full Lollapalooza 2009 lineup — a list of more than 100 acts — including his two top-secret headliners: Tool and the Killers, who will join previously reported headliners the Kings of Leon, the reunited Jane's Addiction, the Beastie Boys and Depeche Mode (as in previous years — 2008's closing-night duel between Kanye West and Nine Inch Nails, for example — each night at Lolla 2009 will have two headliners).

Artists on the undercard include Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Rise Against, TV on the Radio, Vampire Weekend, the Decemberists and Ben Harper and Relentless 7. In keeping with previous years' Lolla lineups, there's also a strong undercurrent of electronic music (Thievery Corporation, MSTRKRFT, Crystal Castles and Simian Mobile Disco), hip-hop (Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, Rye Rye) and hotly tipped indie acts (Animal Collective, Band of Horses, Of Montreal, Deerhunter and Ida Maria).

Lollapalooza 2009 will take place August 7-9 in Chicago's Grant Park. A limited number of advance-price three-day passes are now available through Lollapalooza.com for $190. When those are gone, regular three-day passes will go on sale for $205. There are also VIP packages and private luxury cabanas available for the well-heeled members of the alternative nation.

April Fools' Jokes: The Funniest Albums Of All Time

April Fools' Day is possibly the most hilarious (and torturous) 24 hours of the year, a day filled with plastic dog poop, really awful pranks that result in moderate-to-severe head injuries and guilting and shaming those closest to you. Or, at least, that's how it is here at MTV headquarters.

So, in the spirit of the day — and in an attempt to avoid being Maced by MTV News Director of Operations Jonathan Goldner (that dude's hilarious) — I've holed myself up in my office and have decided to grind out a list of the funniest albums of all time. These are the musical equivalents of plastic dog poop ... records that must surely be a joke (perhaps even a mean-spirited one), because there really is no other explanation for their existence.

As a side note, just because I find all these albums to be hilarious doesn't mean they're terrible. In fact, looking at the list again, I'm struck by how many of them I actually like. Still, that's beside the point. April 1 is a cruel day, and I must roll with the punches. So, for your April Fools' Day pleasure, may I present the greatest musical pranks of all time — a handful of records that probably aren't meant to be laughed at, but, as Q-Tip once said, sometimes you've gotta laugh to keep from crying.

Lou Reed, Metal Machine Music (1975): Either the funniest album of all time or the worst (or probably both), Lou Reed's ear-splitting, dissonant and downright atonal double album (!) was greeted with reviews that compared it to "the tubular groaning of a galactic refrigerator" and "a night in a bus terminal" upon its initial release. Anyone who made it through the album's four noisy, feedback-drenched sides probably agreed — they probably also believed that Reed was either joking or had gone completely insane. Reed himself maintained the album was not a joke (he reportedly also claimed it "invented" heavy metal), though in a 2002 interview, he did admit, "I was serious about it. I was also really, really stoned." We're laughing with you, Lou.

Bob & Doug McKenzie, The Great White North (1981): Toqued up Canadian brothers (as played by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas) record comedy/concept album about beer, back bacon and black holes, land an improbable cameo by Rush's Geddy Lee, inexplicably score a hit single ("Take Off") as a result. All very funny. The fact that this won the Canadian Grammy for Comedy Album of the Year? Hilarious.

Neil Young, Trans (1982): Imagine Neil Young — hirsute, warbly godfather of grunge — singing almost entirely through a Vocoder. Now imagine he's singing songs with titles like "Computer Age," "Transformer Man" and "Computer Cowboy." Slap a goofy, "Tron"-esque cover on that nightmare, and you've got Trans, an album that befuddled pretty much, well, everyone. Most thought it was an elaborate joke; others believed it was Young at his most satirical, poking fun at the soulless, electro-pop that dominated the decade. Regardless, his record label — Geffen — wasn't pleased, and thanks to this album (and 1983's goofy, 25-minute long Everybody's Rockin'), they sued Young for releasing "uncharacteristic, uncommercial" records. For that reason alone, you need to listen to this.

Ween, 12 Golden Country Greats (1996): OK, for starters, this is a Ween album, recorded using legendary Nashville session musicians like Hargus "Pig" Robbins and Russ Hicks. There are songs featuring Muhammad Ali samples and songs with titles like "Piss Up a Rope" and "Mr. Richard Smoker." Oh, and despite the title, there are only 10 tracks on 12 Golden Country Greats.

Beastie Boys,Country Mike's Greatest Hits (1998): Hey, another country piss-take ... and this one is due to severe head trauma! Sometime between the release of 1994's Ill Communication and 1998's Hello Nasty, Mike D was hit on the head and lost all his memory. According to fellow Beastie Adam Yauch, while he was in the grips of amnesia, D believed himself to be a crooner named Country Mike. Acting on a psychologist's advice, the Beasties played along, recording an album of country cuts with titles like "Don't Let the Air Out of My Tires" and "Country Delight." Some appeared on the 1999 Sounds of Science anthology; the rest have become much-sought Beasties' nuggets. Roughly 90 percent of this is actually true, BTW.

Beck, Midnite Vultures (1999): Do you like party-dude, popping-and-locking Beck, or serious, guy-and-an-acoustic-guitar Beck? Well, if you prefer the former, then boy you must love this album. Sadly, most didn't ... mostly because, for the first time in his entire career, people weren't sure if Beck was joking or not. And while the jury's still out, it's hard to think of anyone being serious while thrusting through tracks like "Sexx Laws" or "Hollywood Freaks." And don't even get me started on album closer "Debra," a gut-busting exercise in libidinous bleating and pleading. Beck hasn't been nearly as funny at any point before (or after).

The Bloodhound Gang, Hooray for Boobies (2000): This album is called Hooray for Boobies. What more do you need to know?

Coheed and Cambria, Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2005): Possibly the goofiest thing Coheed have ever done, and given everything they've done, well, that's saying something. From the doomy riffs of "Welcome Home" to the overarching (and overwrought) story line to the hidden tribute to Led Zeppelin that closes the record, this is prog rock at its most hilarious (to say nothing about Claudio Sanchez's hair or the fact that the band toured behind the album with a winged guillotine onstage). The fact that no one in the band seems to be laughing along with the listener transports this into the realm of high art.

Trans Am, T.A. (2002): Washington, D.C.'s Trans Am have always excelled at pointing out the rather ridiculous extremes of genres like prog and post-rock, but on T.A., they push the pointing into overdrive. Positively bathed in '80s synth sheen and featuring feathered and airbrushed liner notes, it's a completely hilarious send-up, one that also includes brilliantly stoopid joints like "Party Station" and "Different Kind of Love," not to mention a drunken impression of Derek Fisher lifted off someone's answering machine. You have to be smart to be this dumb.

The All Points West Music & Arts Festival will return for a second year with a lineup that includes the Beastie Boys, Coldplay and Tool as headliners. The festival, held at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey, will take place July 31 to August 2, with tickets on sale Friday.

Put on by Goldenvoice, the same promoters behind next month's Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, APW will again present a heady mix of alt-rock and rap superstars, new-wave legends, rock, current indie and comedy in the 80-acre Jersey park that's just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan with a clear view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the New York skyline. Promoters said they are also transforming the Queen of the Valley stage into a Coachella-like tent to showcase DJs, electronic acts and comedy this year and are improving the site to be more accessible and comfortable for attendees.

And like Coachella, Stagecoach, Bonnaroo and Rothbury, APW will offer cash-strapped fans the option of buying three-day passes on a layaway plan.

Among the other acts on the bill are Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Neko Case, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys, Echo & the Bunnymen, My Bloody Valentine, MSTRKRFT and Fleet Foxes.

APW will take place one weekend before this year's Lollapalooza festival in Chicago, August 7-9, and the fests will reportedly share the Beastie Boys as a headliner (the Beasties are also scheduled to play Bonnaroo in June). Lollapalooza is expected to announce its lineup in several weeks.

The full lineup for APW:

Friday, July 31: Beastie Boys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Vampire Weekend, the National, Fleet Foxes, MSTRKRFT, Q-Tip, the Pharcyde, Organized Konfusion, the Knux, Ra Ra Riot, Seasick Steve, Telepathe, Shearwater, Heartless Bastards, Flying Lotus, College Humor Live, Arj Barker, Eugene Mirman and Bo Burnham.

Saturday, August 1: Tool, My Bloody Valentine, Gogol Bordello, Arctic Monkeys, Neko Case, the Ting Tings, Yelle, Crystal Castles, St. Vincent, Tokyo Police Club, the Cool Kids, Kool Keith, Cage the Elephant, Chairlift, White Rabbits, Electric Touch, the Postelles, Black Gold, College Humor Live, Tim & Eric, Judah Friedlander and Jim Jeffries.

Sunday, August 2: Coldplay, Echo & the Bunnymen, MGMT, the Black Keys, Elbow, Silversun Pickups, Mogwai, We Are Scientists, Ghostland Observatory, the Gaslight Anthem, Etienne De Crecy, Lykke Li, Akron/Family, Steel Train, Kitty, Daisy & Lewis, College Humor Live, Janeane Garofalo, Michael Showalter and Todd Barry.
