The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive

Some members of the hip-hop community have recently been vocal about their anti-violence stance in the wake of the murder of Derrion Albert. David Banner has been particularly active on the matter of youth violence and attempted to organize a rally in Chicago — which was ultimately postponed — for the video of the remix of his song "Something's Wrong."

Banner recently told us that the song wasn't dedicated specifically to Albert, but it was part of a new album he's working on with producer 9th Wonder.

"Me and 9th Wonder are really good friends, and we really got tired of people complaining about the fact that there's no good music. And we started making this album called Death of a Pop Star," Banner said.

The album, about the death of young people's music and how it has all been reduced to downloads, was made to prove to everybody that there is still good music being made. And it will cost you nothing.

"We're going to give the album away for free," Banner offered.

The Mississippi native also said that he and 9th would be setting up a Web site where you can send donations for the album. Half of the proceeds from those donations will go to a yet-to-be-named nonprofit organization. Banner emphasized the fact that "Something's Wrong" is about a much broader problem than Chicago's recent tragedy.

"What I want people to know is that if you listen to the first version of the song, I wasn't just talking about Chicago — I was talking about things that were happening in America, period."

CHICAGO — The community rally and video shoot for David Banner's "Something's Wrong," originally scheduled for Tuesday (October 20), won't be happening until mid-November. According to a press release from Banner's Heal the Hood Foundation and 247HH.com, the event was postponed due to an increase in the anticipated number of attendees and resulting safety issues.

Despite the event's postponement, Banner was in good spirits when MTV News caught up with him in Chicago. "If we would've been doing 'Girls Gone Wild 17,' everything would've went smoothly. Honestly, nothing went wrong," Banner said. "The truth this time is that there was an overwhelming response, and it was too big."

Banner said they were only expecting 500-700 attendees, but that number quickly grew to an anticipated 2,500. He said the projection showed him that "people are sick and tired of talking, and they are read to move. They're just waiting on somebody to move them in the right direction.

"Sometime you have to make a decision that's better for the people," Banner continued. "If we would've had 2,500 hundred people, it wouldn't have had the proper security. If anything would've went wrong, they would've said, 'Look at them rappers. Look at MTV. Look at David Banner.' So I made the decision: Since we know that we have this power, and people know that we're in the position to make something move, let's push it back and organize it."

Banner planned to film the video for the remix of his song "Something's Wrong," featuring Twista, Naledge of Kidz in the Hall, Rhymefest and Scooter. Though the remix is dominated by Chicago artists, Banner said that in the original song, he wasn't just talking about the Windy City.

"Whether America wants to admit it or not — whether you're Christian, Muslim, whether you believe in Buddhism — whatever you believe in, we know in our spirit that right now something is not right," he said.

As they say in the biz, the show must goes on. And on the eve of President Barack Obama's inauguration, the Heroes Red, White and Blue Military Ball had to do just that.

Scheduled performers
Jamie Foxx, Nas, Josh Groban and Tiki Barber ultimately did not appear, putting ball sponsors USO, TAPS and Citizens Helping Heroes in a difficult position. Nevertheless, adjustments were made and the night was a huge success, with performances by Parliament Funkadelic mastermind George Clinton — who is renowned for his wild live shows — David Banner, Memphis Gold and others.

"We can be so proud," Captain Angelina Carrera said. "We served our country with love and honor."

Carrera served in Iraq with her husband, Colonel Stephen K. Scott. He was killed by a mortar round in Baghdad last April. Carrera's remarks came during an intermission between performers Memphis Gold, Peter Paul and George Clinton in the historic Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C.

During Obama's inaugural address earlier that day, the president stressed that American civilians should follow the example of men and women in uniform.

Staff Sergeant Calvin Linnette, who was wounded twice in Iraq, said Obama's remarks made him feel good.

"A lot of people today wouldn't join the military," he said. "A lot wouldn't dare join. But Obama sees the courage in us, he sees what we endure. For him to make that comment, about our service, it means so much. He understands what we sacrifice."

The sacrifice wasn't lost on the quickly organized group of performers, including George Clinton and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, who stepped up to give America's heroes a show.

"This is an honor," Peanut of George Clinton's entourage said. "We don't say it enough. We don't say 'thank you' enough."

Watch "Be the Change: Live From the Inaugural" online now, and come back Thursday for the full performances from Kanye West, Kid Rock and Fall Out Boy. Stick with us for wall-to-wall coverage of the inauguration and of the scenes in Washington, D.C., New Orleans and Kenya.

While David Banner the rapper is going out on tour with Talib Kweli, David Banner the producer recently submitted new tracks to Lil Wayne and T.I. and is especially pleased with a song he made with "Get Like Me" co-star Chris Brown.

"With Chris Brown, we worked on a song called 'Save Me,' " Banner recently said in L.A. "It's wonderful. He was actually influenced by what happened during the hurricanes. It's really a gospel song, to be honest with you. And for me to be able to influence Chris in that way, for him to want to take his career to a whole 'nother level and really gamble in that direction, I was really, really impressed."

Banner, who also has a lucrative side gig as an actor, says his records are very much in demand as an MC and as a track master. Who is he to fight the momentum?

"I'm producing two songs on Lil Wayne's album," Banner said. "I really can't get into that. ... Everyone's asking for a beat, so you got to get it while it's hot. Right now, you name it, I'm working with them. You know, just working on everybody we can get close to. I can tell you the thing I'm most excited about: I just finished working with Quincy Jones. We redid [George Benson's] 'Give Me the Night' with Jamie Foxx. We produced it, me and Warren Campbell. You check that out, it's going to be wonderful also."

Banner and Kweli are currently co-headlining the Sony-sponsored Hip-Hop Live! Tour. B.O.B. and Little Brother will open during various stops. The outing started earlier this month and runs through October 25 at New York's Nokia Theatre Times Square.

"We're coming to a city close to you," DB promised. "Inside the tour bus, we have studios. We're going all over America, a lot of places where rap concerts don't stop. And what's going to be amazing about this tour is that we're getting out there touching people, getting out there being with the fans. You have to be in front of everything going on, so we record [while on tour]."

The remaining Hip-Hop Live! Tour dates, according to the promoters:

» 10/16 - Fort Lauderdale, FL @ Revolution
» 10/18 - Athens, GA @ Georgia Theatre
» 10/19 - Asheville, NC @ Orange Peel
» 10/20 - Washington, D.C. @ 9:30 Club
» 10/21 - Philadelphia, PA @ Trocadero Theatre

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico — Being on Hollywood movie sets over the past year hasn't spoiled Ludacris' stage presence: He's got the same charisma and gusto on the mic that he's always had.

Good thing, too — Luda needed all his star power on Sunday night as he headlined Albuquerque's third annual "New Mexico Takeover," a concert featuring local acts, old-school legends and today's top stars. However, 'Cris had to carry the bulk of the weight in the latter category on Sunday night, when two of the show's main attractions, David Banner and Game, were no-shows.

Banner's absence was unexplained, while the announcer told the 15,000-plus-strong crowd at the Journal Pavilion here that Game was not coming because he was sick. A chorus of boos filled the night air at the outdoor venue like plumes of smoke from the food court's grill — the announcement came right before 'Cris hit the stage. Thanks, guys ...

Still, Luda was oblivious, kicking off his set with "Southern Fried Intro." Chants of "Luuuuddddaaa!!!" busted out as he then went into "Number One Spot."

'Cris told the crowd that he wanted to take them back around eight years and his DJ put on "Act a Fool," which was followed by "Southern Hospitality."

"So this is 505, right?" he said later in the set, referring to city's area code. "Guess what I got in the 505? I got hoes!" Naturally, this led into "Area Codes."

"When I say 'Where's da ho's?', you're not supposed to make any noise!" Luda said to the crowd with a grin — some audience members were so hyped they responded to the wrong question.

"Where's the independent women at?" he then asked to cheers. Luda and hypeman/ DTP member Lil' Fate then started the shouts of "Oh! Oh!" that set off "Splash Waterfalls."

Throughout the show, Luda proved that not only can he bring premium excitement without the use of elaborate sets, background dancers or bands, but his reputation as one of hip-hop's best live acts is due largely to his abundance of strong material: His catalog is so thick that it seemed on Sunday that he could have performed for well north of two hours if he wanted to.

After playing "I Know What Them Girls Like" (the first commercial single from his November 11 release, Theater of the Mind), Luda jumped into the photographer pit to touch fans' hands on "Lovers and Friends." He then said, "We was supposed to get off the stage 15 minutes ago, but we got so many songs ... I'mma give y'all another song, you ready? I just don't want anybody to get hurt."

Of course the song that followed was his most rambunctious effort to date, "Move B---h."

"Get the F--- Back," which followed, was pretty rowdy as well, and 'Cris closed the night with "Money Maker," never losing energy and keeping the crowd's attention and participation throughout the entire show.

HOUSTON — You know you're in for a memorable awards show when fists are thrown, the police are called in and somebody gets (mildly) injured before one award is announced or anybody gets to perform. On Monday night at the George R. Brown Convention Center, the third annual Ozone Awards began with a physical altercation between H-Town MCs Mike Jones and Trae that took place while some audience members were just getting to their seats. The show hadn't even started.

After the scuffle, Trae was escorted out of the main hall by police, but later returned. Jones — who has lost a considerable amount of weight in recent months — was taken away for minor medical assistance.

Host DeRay Davis was obviously unaware of the clash as he began his opening monologue, telling the audience that everyone came in peace and no one was fighting. Some audience members immediately retorted that he was wrong.

"Did I miss an ass-whoopin' or somethin'?" he asked.

"Yeah!"

"Damn!" the comedian responded with surprise.

Once the show finally started, artists from the South and the West Coast did show strong unity, especially during a moving tribute to UGK's late Pimp C, in which MCs joined forces for covers of some of Pimp's famous verses. Too Short came out and did C's rhyme from Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'," David Banner followed with bars from UGK and Outkast's "Int'l Players Anthem," to which Big Boi added his own verse. Webbie was next, rapping Pimp's lines from "One Day." Bun B closed it out backed by a full choir for "Angel in the Sky."

Shortly after the tribute, T-Pain beat out Pimp and others for the TJ's DJ's Tastemaker Award, which goes to the person who sets standards in music, fashion and style. T-Pain's victory was clearly an anticlimactic moment: The crowd had anticipated a win by their hometown hero, even yelling out "Pimp C! Pimp C!" in the anxious moments before the winner was announced. Pain later forked over his award, saying C deserved it.

No one was upset by Shawty Lo winning Breakthrough Artist. The MC, who performed a medley beforehand, brought his daughter and a female companion onstage with him to accept the honor.

DJ Khaled took home best DJ honors, and wouldn't you know it? Mike Jones showed shades of Paul Pierce in this year's NBA finals, coming from the back of the room with a small bandage across his nose, to announce the nominees in the category.

Co-presenter Alfamega — who's signed to T.I.'s Grand Hustle label — asked him, "Are you all right?"

"What don't kill me makes me stronger," Jones said. He apologized to the crowd for the preshow scuffle, saying, "We don't get down like that in H-town," but also had words for Trae: "If you gonna get me, get me straight up."

As for Khaled, he and his Florida collective had the performance of the show, closing out with a medley. The entire crowd got on its feet as Khaled, Rick Ross, T-Pain and Ace Hood went through "The Boss," "Cash Flow," "I'm So Hood" and "Out Here Grindin."

"Ozone Awards are so big," Ross said backstage before performing. "This is something major for the streets! A lot of people who didn't or who don't normally get love from other outlets can count on Ozone to shed some light on them."

Ross won Best Rap Album for Trilla; Snoop Dogg won Best Rap Album (West Coast). The coveted lyricist of the year nod went to Lil Wayne.

The awards took over the city for the weekend, filling H-Town with revelry fitting such a major event. MCs both established and on the rise came out for the celebration: At clubs around town, you'd see familiar faces like T.I., Young Jeezy, even Nelly and the Game, and Rick Ross performed on Saturday night.

Despite a brief scuffle between DJ Vlad and a member of Rick Ross' entourage, having a good time and networking was the focus.

"The weekend is big for the South," Jeezy said backstage at his show on Saturday. "It's big for hip-hop, period."

Ozone magazine was started by journalist Julia Beverly and is dedicated to providing coverage to acts from the South and West who were overlooked or undiscovered by more mainstream publications. The awards followed in the spirit of the magazine honoring up and coming acts as well as artists who have broken through.

"After all these years, the only award I've ever received was a Ozone award," the legendary Mannie Fresh said backstage. "So I love the show. It's the third year, it keeps getting better."

After weeks of trading places at the top of the weekly Billboard albums chart, Lil Wayne and Coldplay have been vanquised by a new champion. Following months of hype about its original title and subsequent change, Nas' Untitled will cruise to the top spot on the chart on sales of 186,600. The Nas takeover will push Weezy's Tha Carter III down a notch to #2 on sales of 105,500, according to Nielsen SoundScan, just one week after Wayne had regained the pole position from Coldplay.

Nas' debut was strong, giving him his fourth #1 bow, but it paled in comparison to the first week for his previous album, Hip Hop Is Dead, which scanned 354,000 units back in 2006. The soundtrack to the ABBA-centric "Mamma Mia!" busts into the #3 slot on sales of 91,400, dropping Coldplay's Viva la Vida down to #4, with 90,300 more converts, and the "Camp Rock" soundtrack follows with another 78,000 units moved. The second wind for iTunes holdout Kid Rock's Rock N Roll Jesus continues unabated, as the album sees sales tick up almost 20 percent from last week with 73,500 more satisfied customers, landing it in the #6 spot.

The top 10 also features three other fresh faces: Rock Hall of Famer John Mellencamp's Life Death Love and Freedom at #7 with 56,200 in sales, David Banner's The Greatest Story Ever Told at #8 on 51,800 units and Taylor Swift's Wal-Mart-only album Beautiful Eyes at #9 with 44,700. The top 10 is rounded out by the expanded edition of Rihanna's Good Girl Gone Bad, which slipped two spots from last week with sales of 41,300.

There were plenty of other debuts in the mix, with jam band O.A.R.'s All Sides landing at #13 with 33,200 in sales; county veteran Randy Travis clocking 31,000 in sales for Around the Bend at #14; the soundtrack to "The Dark Knight," swooping into the #20 position on 24,700 in sales; and bar-rock heroes the Hold Steady grabbing the #30 slot with their latest chronicle of lovable losers, Stay Positive, which won over 17,400 big spenders.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Magic Tour Highlights EP appears at #48 with 11,800 units moved. Aussie rising star Delta Goodrem breaks through at #116 on 6,000 copies of Delta, and Atlanta rockers Rehab punch in at #132 with sales of 5,100 for Graffiti the World.

While both Coldplay and Weezy have seen their sales drop off slowly but steadily, a couple of acts that debuted in the top 10 recently took major falls, including Beck, whose Modern Guilt saw a 66 percent drop in sales, landing him at #16, and G-Unit's T.O.S. (Terminate on Sight), which skidded 40 percent in its third week on the chart, dropping from #9 to #24.

Nas shouldn't get too comfortable, since next week will bring the chart debut of Miley Cyrus' first full album under her own name, Breakout.

While it feels like every R&B singer and rapper in the world is choosing to put their twist on Lil Wayne's "A Milli," David Banner went the other direction and took a piece from Weezy's #1 single "Lollipop." Wayne's sampled lines from the record help comprise the chorus to the Mississippi marksman's "Shawty Say."

"Shawty say the n---a that she with ain't sh--/ He can't do this and he don't do that," Weezy is heard saying on the record.

"I'm very excited about it," Banner told us a couple of weeks back in Los Angeles, the day before his video shoot with Weezy.

"The concept of the video 'Shawty Say' is really about the things women say about men that a lot of times we don't pay attention to," he explained. "As a brother, I just wanna articulate what the ladies are saying to me in a way that men could actually embrace it. So what we going around doing is seeing the men who ain't treating their women right and we're pulling them aside and interrogating them. 'This is what your woman is saying. You need to go home before somebody scoop her.' "

Wayne is one of the myriad of guests on Banner's next LP, The Greatest Story Ever Told. Weezy actually appears twice on the project, which drops Tuesday. Jim Jones, Akon, Chris Brown, Yung Joc, UGK, Snoop Dogg, Chamillionaire and Carl Thomas also contributed.

Barry Bonds declining a wardrobe change, the Maloof brothers taking dance lessons from Chris Brown — and David Banner showing off his guns for the first time. Who couldn't enjoy themselves on the Los Angeles set of Banner's "Get Like Me" video?

"It's a lot of ladies," Brown told MTV News, while sitting on his motorbike. "The whole thing has been fun — even just chilling with everybody."

Chris Brown guest-stars in the video and the song, as does Yung Joc.

"Making this record with Banner and Joc — me and Banner are real close friends," Brown said. "We did the movie 'This Christmas' and working [on the set], he said, 'I got this record that if you get on, I think it will be great.' I told him I didn't want to do a typical R&B record — I don't wanna do the hook-kinda thing that every other R&B artist does. I would more like to be in tune with the verse or do a verse almost like I'm rapping, but singing it. I recorded the song in [Virginia], he said, 'Oh word, that's dope.' "

Chris' chat with MTV News was then interrupted by Banner: The two began bantering in fake British accents, then brought it back to their native American-speak.

"I know that since he's a big superstar now, he's trapped in the tour bus and like, 'I wish I could just go out and just have fun!' " Banner joked of Brown.

"I ain't Michael [Jackson]!" Chris laughed.

"How great is Chris Brown?" Brown continued in the guise of a reporter questioning Banner.

"Chris Brown is all right, but we in the 'hood, so I can't really tell nobody how much I bump Chris Brown when the homies not around," the Mississippi rapper responded. "It's haawwwrd! Hawwwrd in the streets."

"I'm a gangsta dancer!" Brown said minutes later, yelling, "It's hard out here too! Ballets, pirouettes!"

Banner, Brown and Yung Joc would later be doing synchronized dancing and filming with an MLB legend.

"Barry Bonds came out!" Banner said with pride. "You know how y'all like to have your rappers' friends — Barry Bonds is here. Barry came fresh out of court to come holla at me. That's real."

Banner's Greatest Story Ever Told will be out toward the end of July. He said the reason it didn't come out last year as planned is because he's trying to build up his brand.

"When the album comes out, we're trying to make sure it's a statement," he explained. "Greatest Story Ever Told: Listen to the title. We have to make sure [the impact] matches."

Banner produced approximately 80 percent of the LP himself; Akon and the production team of Cool & Dre contributed as well. Guest vocals were secured from Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne, T.I., UGK, Kandi Burrus (formerly of Xscape) and Jim Jones.

"Get Like Me" is all about stuntin', and in the video you'll see plenty of performance and glamour shots of women and Banner's own vehicles.

The curtain is just about ready to be raised on Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III LP. Weezy was in Miami on Monday with legendary photographer Jonathan Manion, shooting artwork for the album, and pretty soon he'll be going back in front of the camera to film the first video for the effort. The song is called "Showtime."

"The Carter III is coming in 2008. I don't want to give no months, no date," he said. "I got a gang of singles [on Carter III]. [It's] produced by my homeboy Diesel. He's also a Young Money affiliate. He's down with us. He's a producer/singer/engineer. He does it all. I have my artist featured on the song. Her name is Chanell. We already have a remix featuring Brisco and Lil' Boosie."

He added that for the "Showtime" video, "We're gonna get Gil Green or Benny [Boom] to direct. I really don't know. They're all my brothers. The concept is really 'Showtime,' just performance. Me and my artist Chanell gonna play a lot with the video. It's gonna be very animated but straight to the point. Colorful. Y'all [should be looking] to be entertained."

Wayne says he's recorded so many songs for the album besides "Showtime" that he's not sure which ones will make the cut. Just about every hip-hop producer you can name contributed to Tha Carter III, including Timbaland, David Banner, Jay Bezel from the Diplomat camp, T-Mix, Mannie Fresh, Cool & Dre, Just Blaze and even Wayne himself.

"Me and my homeboy Diesel, we got a Kanye West track and added some drums to it," he said. "I don't know what songs [the record company] picked. I just know the intros and the single."

Weezy says his side work as the most-sought-after cameo man in the business isn't slowing down. He just finished a remix of Rick Ross' "Speedin' " with Fat Joe — don't miss Wayne's use of the same voice enhancement T-Pain employs — and has been writing for Dr. Dre.

"Call me by a new name: 'Featuring Lil Wayne,' " he joked about all his guest appearances. But while he has more names on his résumé than you can count, he did say there's one MC he hasn't worked with but with whom he really wants to. Actually, that's "M.C.," not "MC."

"I have never done nothing with Mariah Carey, and I would like to, because I love older women," the 25-year-old said. "I'm attracted to older women. It's my thing. Mariah Carey, she might need a dude like me. I do my thing."
