Ashanti and Ja Rule were among the many who took to the stage during VH1's "Hip Hop Honors" celebration that paid tribute to Def Jam Records.

The former standout stars on the label performed their hit, "Down A-- Chick." Together they ruled the charts during their Def Jam run, scoring hits from both of their albums separately and in collaboration. So reuniting for the festivities wasn't a hard thing to do, according to Ashanti.

"It's been great," she told MTV News before the show. "I haven't performed with Ja since — I can't even remember it's been so long. We talked to each other on the phone and we said, 'Yo, we gonna make it hot! It's gonna be like old times.' It feels good. When we did the rehearsal, the chemistry was there."

Next up the songstress is readying a new album, her first since parting ways with Irv Gotti and Murder Inc. Records earlier this year. The untitled project is slated for release next year on her own Written Entertainment imprint, she said.

For her forthcoming album, her fifth overall, Ashanti said she's working with a mix of new and familiar faces, including the writer behind her last album's biggest hit, "The Way That I Love You."

"I've been working with a lot of people," she said. "These new producers, The American Dream, Warren Campbell, L.T. [Hutton] again, who did my last single. So it's been good."

In May Irv Gotti confirmed to MTV News that Ashanti would be parting ways with the Inc. The move was expected after her last album, The Declaration, was put together with little input from her former label head. Gotti said it's no longer possible for the pair to create music.

"The relationship has run its course," Gotti explained at the time.

"The chemistry of what's needed — we're in two totally different places. You're talking to somebody that took her and shaped and molded her and put her out there for the world, and it blew up. We [hold the record] for the [fastest] selling debut by a female R&B artist — 503 [thousand]. We did it! My views and philosophies and her views and philosophies are not meeting up."

NEW YORK — Come June 12, Ashanti will be easing on down the road as Dorothy during a three-week stint in "The Wiz" at the New York City Center. And until she begins rehearsals next week, the Grammy-winning singer is just spending time at home, working on the role made famous by Diana Ross.

"We don't start rehearsals until next Monday, so I'm at home rehearsing in my room," she told MTV News at a press conference for "The Wiz," where she sang the song "Home" from the show. "But it feels great to be out here and to sing 'Home' for the very first time in front of a crowd. It makes it realistic, and it kind of hits home, ironically."

Although she still has a few weeks until she makes her debut as Dorothy, Ashanti is excited that night after night, she'll get the chance to sing "Home."

"I think so many people relate to that song on so many different levels. Obviously, for me, being gone and traveling so much, you miss home, and you get a sense of 'I miss it,' so when I'm there, I take advantage," she said. "Then again, so many people are able to relate to it."

The cast includes Orlando Jones ("Mad TV") as the Wiz and LaChanze (Broadway's "The Color Purple") as Glinda. Ashanti can't wait to start working with them.

"Just jelling with the rest of the cast when we do our read and the script is hilarious. I didn't think it was going to be that funny, but it's really, really great," she said. "So just to hear the real voices and put the faces to the characters is going to be great."

Ashanti is no stranger to the Land of Oz. She previously made trips there as Dorothy in the Muppets version of "The Wizard of Oz" and as the Wicked Witch of the West for a charity production of "Wicked." "I don't know [why I keep visiting Oz]," she said. "They look at me like I'm Dorothy. That's going to be my new nickname!"

Irv Gotti Says He's Dropping Ashanti From The Inc.

Irv Gotti says he and Ashanti, the Princess of the Inc., will soon be parting company. He said they haven't been on speaking terms for some time, and the label head/reality-TV star says there's nothing he can do but end their musical and business affiliation.

"The relationship has run its course," Gotti explained earlier this week while visiting the MTV offices.

Ashanti's last LP, The Declaration — her first in four years — came out in June of last year on the Inc. and was created with virtually no input from Gotti. The album was her first in-studio project not to go platinum. Gotti says it's because the singer deviated from their winning formula and tag-team effort.

"I personally believe for her to be successful, it took the energy ... when you seen her, it was 30 n---as around her, and she's the princess so nice and pretty walking through," he said. "The music was great, but it was the energy that was created. It wasn't just her standing there and singing a song.

"We don't really speak or talk or anything like that," he continued. "It's sad in a way. But in another, it's like it's all good."

Well, maybe not that good. Gotti said it is best for them to part ways.

"I don't think she can win. She needs some guidance with that," Gotti added. "But she's not thinking like that. Really, I couldn't tell you what she's thinking. So that relationship has run its course and honestly, I'm gonna just drop her."

At press time, a rep for Ashanti had not granted MTV News' requests for comment.

Gotti told MTV News that he's maintained the rights to all of his artists, including Ashanti, Lloyd and of course Ja Rule. The exec says he's working on a deal to reunite with his fellow Def Jam alumni Lyor Cohen, Kevin Liles and Julie Greenwald over at the Warner Music Group. He says new albums by Lloyd, new rapper Newz and Rule are in the cooker. He explains the delay of Rule's The Mirror is because they are trying to craft a classic LP.

Ashanti Studying Diana Ross' Performance To Prepare For 'The Wiz'

'I watched the DVD twice already,' she says of getting ready for New York City Center production.
By Jocelyn Vena

Ashanti knows a thing or two about visiting Oz. Not only has she played Dorothy in the Muppets version of "The Wizard of Oz," but she also played the Wicked Witch of the West for a charity production of "Wicked."

So this summer, when she reprises her role as Dorothy in the NY City Center Encores! Summer Stars production of "The Wiz," a role made famous by Diana Ross in the 1978 movie version, the singer will spend a lot of time in front of her TV to do some research. "I'm excited. I watched the DVD twice already," she told MTV News. "I'm definitely going to have it on repeat."

Ashanti is using her nerves to prepare for the part. "I think it's definitely going to be pressure, but in a good way. Broadway is so prestigious, and just getting that experience and getting to work with more seasoned actors is exciting," she said. "Broadway, it's a horse of a different color."

Although she's had some experience in the role of Dorothy, the last time around she was acting alongside Muppets. She said she would jump at the chance to get Diana Ross' advice. "I actually saw her," Ashanti recalled. "I did a Cartier event last year, and she performed, and I was like, 'Oh, my God!' She was so sweet and so down to earth."

Ashanti said that she doesn't know who else will be in the production, which will run from June 12 through July 5 at the New York City Center, but she did have a suggestion for the role of Toto. "What's so funny is that I have my own teacup Yorkie named Mimi," she said. "And I'm like, 'Can they just let me use Mimi?' "

"I was completely devastated by the concept of what I heard," Kanye West told Ryan Seacrest Tuesday morning (February 10) during a radio interview. West said he was so upset by the news that even affected him during his performance of "American Boy" at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.

"I was completey devastated during the performance," he said. "All I will say is it's so devastating. I feel like, just as a person, I don't care how famous she is, or even if she worked at McDonald's, that should have never happened. It should have never come to that place."

West said he saw both performers at Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party on Saturday night, and that he is on closer terms with Rihanna.

"I know Rihanna a bit better because I went on tour with her and we vibed out on a lot of creative ideas with the touring," he said. "I gave her all these references of Grace Jones and [photographer] Jean-Paul Goude, back in the '80s when pop stars took it to a whole 'nother level. I felt and feel like Rihanna is so important to our culture, to pop music. I feel that she is the most important artist in music and has the most potential. For her taste level at her age and the songs she does and her style. She has the potential to be the greatest artist of all time. In that sense, I feel like she's my baby sis, and I would do any and everything to help her in any situation."

Monday night on "Last Call With Carson Daly," T.I. said he has spoken with Brown since the incident happened.

"I spoke to him today," Tip said. "He's cool, you know. He's a little concerned about the situation, but he's still the same Chris."

Tip said despite conversing with Brown, he still didn't know what had happened, but he offered advice to the singer.

"I told him, 'This too shall pass.' We're celebrities, we're entertainers, but we're still human — all of us," he said. "Don't expect us not to make mistakes, because we will."

Following his appearance on "Last Call," T.I. released a statement to MTV News expressing regret for his comments on the incident. "After careful consideration, I realized I made the mistake of commenting before understanding the situation," the statement read. "I myself am no stranger to media scrutiny. My only intention was to support both Rihanna and Chris during these times. My heart goes out to both of them.

Someone who is all too familiar with having a domestic dispute plastered across the headlines is Lionel Richie, whose ugly confrontations with his now-ex-wife Brenda ultimately resulted in her arrest in 1988. Richie advised both Brown and Rihanna to not run away from what happened.

"You'll go through adversity," he offered. "You're gonna have it. You're gonna have difficulty. Stand up, face it. Look right in the camera, say, 'Yes, I did it,' then back out of it. Keep going. That's all you can do. Because now, there's no more secrets. You can't hide anything anymore.

"You can't get away now," he continued, analyzing how much the media has changed over the past two decades. "It took a minute ... when you could practice your integrity thing, you could practice your mistakes, before the world even heard about it. Now, whatever mistake you make, it's out there. It's a different kind of vibe. I wouldn't want to deal with it right now, not learning the business and life at the same time with that thing [camera] pointing at you every five minutes. All I can say is it's here, it's now, deal with it."

Ashanti, whose critically acclaimed song "Rain on Me" dealt with domestic violence, said "I definitely wish them the best. There's a lot of things that's alleged. Nobody knows what going on. They're young. I hope everything's all right for the both of them."

"Everybody is calling it a #1 record," Plies said recently on the Atlanta set of the video for his song "Want It, Need It." The clip, which features Ashanti, reworks the 1987 R&B classic "Two Occasions." "It's a hell of a record — an old Babyface sample. ... Actually, it was the Deel that first used it; Babyface used it after that. It's one of those records that people in the radio world considered a 'first-listen record.' It's me being me. It's a female-driven record to a certain extent, but it's me speaking to the goons as usual. I think that chemistry is something that always works for me. A lot of stations already jumped out and are banging the record."

"Oh boy, I think of you on two occasions/ That's when I want it/ That's when I need it," Ashanti sings on the chorus.

"I'm on call for you seven days a week," Plies raps. "Sex on delivery, S.O.D."

Records like these off his latest, Da Realist, are a reason why Plies isn't in too much of rush to release a new album. His first three LPs came within several months of each other, which is swift turnaround, even for a hip-hop artist.

"This 'Street Light' record with Sean Garrett is a monster. 'Plenty Money,' 'F--- U Gon' Do 'Bout It,' I've been hearing is a classic," Plies said about the reaction to his LP, which dropped on December 16. "I'm gonna gage the temperature on it. I'm gonna see where this third album takes me. With the economy being how it is, you have to be more patient — especially in the urban field. When you look at the changes going around the country, I don't think the pop side is experiencing [the sales decline] what we're experiencing on the hip-hop side. I look at my situation for what it's worth."

Da Realist's most 'emotional' record, according to its author, is "Family Straight." On it he talks about a myriad of his loved ones' trials and tribulations.

"Last 10 years momma been working twice a day," the Fort Myers, FL native raps on the chorus. "Grandma on the kidney machine, she done lost all the weight/ My auntie go AIDS, she starting to lose her faith/ My brother back in prison, second time he done gone away/ My daddy still smoking that sh-- I can see it in his face/ My lil' cousin, 16, pregnant from a n---a 38..."

"It's a gift that God has given me that I thank him for a on a day-to-day basis," Plies explained. "I think it's so important for me to open myself up to this country and put my pain on records. People use my words of encouragement for therapy, and I feel like on this particular record, I just opened up my whole life. To match the visuals with it, it's probably one of the most jumped-on viewed videos of my career. This record is s a no-brainer record. It's a personal record and it's reality situations in my life right now. I was in Atlanta and I got the call from my mom — she was crying — that my grandmother's heart had stopped. That's the person I was talking about in the song."

Less than 24 hours after a group of concerned parents and religious leaders gathered outside the Universal/Motown offices in Los Angeles to protest the bloody promotion for Ashanti's "The Way That I Love You" single, the singer's label has pulled the offending "Gotchagram" clip from her site. And, according to one of the protest leaders, the decision came after his group threatened to picket Ashanti's performance at Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Sunday.

"Following discussions with Ashanti, we have jointly decided to remove the TheWayThatILoveYou.com website that hosts the Gotchagram," read a statement issued from the singer's label Wednesday morning (June 11). "Ashanti and her music have always been about self-empowerment and addressing the issues that are most meaningful to her. We stand by our artist and her creative choices."

Paul Porter of the nonpartisan media justice think tank Industry Ears said he was pleased with the rapid response, which he said came from the top. "I just got off the phone with [Motown Records President] Sylvia Rhone," he told MTV News on Wednesday, just before the statement was issued. "And she said they were going to pull it down, and that was the goal, so we're happy about that."

Porter said the decision to can the promotion came after his group threatened to protest Ashanti's performance of the national anthem during Sunday's playoff game in Los Angeles. Just after noon (ET) on Wednesday, Porter provided MTV News with a copy of the e-mail he sent with the protest threat, as well as what he said was the response from Rhone, which read, "The sight [sic] is down, I took it down this morning."

As of 12:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, the link to the Gotchagram was still on Ashanti's official site, but it redirected users to her official homepage instead of the offending one.

Disturbed's Indestructible Knocks Usher Off Top Of Billboard Chart

At this point, it's been well established that Chicago's Disturbed are one of the biggest hard-rock outfits in all the land. They've sold millions of records, sold out hundreds of shows and been tapped to headline one of this summer's heaviest tours.

So, naturally, no one batted an eyelash when the boys decided to dub their fourth studio LP Indestructible. And with close to 253,000 copies sold during the album's first week on record-store shelves, Disturbed truly live up to the title; Indestructible is the band's third record to debut at #1 on the Billboard albums sales chart.

According to the most recent Nielsen SoundScan tallies, Disturbed's latest joins 2005's Ten Thousand Fists and 2002's Believe, opening on top during what was a strong week, overall, for the music industry. While the new album bests the scan total put forth by Ten Thousand Fists (which sold 238,500 during week one), it couldn't outperform the 283,600 in sales generated by Believe.

Disturbed's Indestructible may lead the pack, but it was one of five albums on the chart to generate six-digit sales totals — something that, in the age of the download, does not happen often. In addition, the record was one of 20 new releases that will be appear on next week's top 200 — but one of those albums wasn't supposed to enter the chart until a week later.

Rapper Lil Wayne's long-awaited Tha Carter III wasn't officially released until June 10, but the record still managed to enter next week's chart at #167 with 3,900 copies sold nationwide. Clearly, some legitimate record stores began selling the disc before its actual release date — perhaps as soon as copies arrived from distributors. It remains to be seen how these premature sales might affect the LP's standing on the following week's chart; Wayne is poised to claim the #1 spot, with early indicators suggesting he could sell more than 800,000 units, making it the year's best performer by far.

Along with Disturbed's LP, next week's top 10 will include five other newcomers, including the 28th installment in the Now That's What I Call Music! compilation series, which enters at #2 with 185,000 sold. The disc features tracks from Leona Lewis, Britney Spears, Jordin Sparks, OneRepublic and Daughtry, among others. Finishing at #4, with 126,000 scans, is Weezer's latest, the self-titled red album, followed at #5 by Journey's Revelation, with 105,000 sold. Ashanti's comeback album, Declaration, bows at #6, selling 86,300 copies, while Jewel's Perfectly Clear enters at #8 with sales reported at 47,7000.

The rest of the top 10 is rounded out by Usher's Here I Stand at #3 (with 144,600 sold), the "Sex and the City" soundtrack at #7 (60,000), 3 Doors Down's self-titled latest at #9 (45,000) and Chris Brown's Exclusive at #10 (36,200).

Elsewhere on the chart, Swedish melodic death-metallers Opeth's Watershed opens at #23, having sold close to 20,000 units, while Radiohead's The Best Of debuts at #26 with 18,300 scans. Former Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale's Wanderlust follows at #32 with 15,400 in first-week scans, while the 2008 Warped Tour compilation claims the chart's #34 position with 14,500 sold. Bret Michaels' Rock My World opens at #39 with 13,400 sold.

R&B artist Lalah Hathaway's Self Portrait opens at #62, thanks to 9,400 scans, while Aimee Mann's @#%&*! Smilers takes the chart's #80 slot with 8,100 sold. Seattle rockers Fleet Foxes' self-titled opus follows at #83, selling 8,000 copies, while Alesana's Where Myth Fades to Legend enters at #97, having sold 7,200 units.

It's been a good four years since we heard from Ashanti. And like any artist hoping to get their career back on track after a poorly selling album — in her case, 2004's Concrete Rose — the Grammy-winning Inc. star needed to make some serious noise to announce her return with the recently released album, The Declaration.

But the blood-splattered video for her single "The Way That I Love You," and a related e-card that features fake news reports about a crime spree allegedly inspired by the revenge-minded clip, sparked a protest on Tuesday (June 10) in Los Angeles that called for the promotional stunt to be taken down.

The music video for the song implies that a spurned lover, played by Ashanti, exacts revenge on her cheating boyfriend by stabbing him to death, and the clip features images of blood-spattered walls, images that are repeated in an e-card promotion linked to from the official Ashanti homepage.

Visitors to the controversial site are greeted by a fake news headline from the UCN, the Universal Crime Network, which reports that, "police are investigating a recent wave of violence in New Jersey. The police commissioner has hinted that there may be a tie between the recent attacks and the music video for Universal/Motown recording artist Ashanti's single 'The Way That I Love You.' "

A fake news story on the site ends with the warning that police fear the prime suspect in the alleged string of killings, Victoria Jackson, "may be planning to open a big can of whoop-ass. Authorities have already expressed apprehension at the pending release of Ashanti's album, The Declaration, on June 3rd, fearful that the power of the album will lead to more violence. Only time will tell."

Less than 30 seconds after the site loads, a large knife, dripping with blood, carves out a box at the top of the page, and a menu pops up that lets users send a "Gotchagram" e-card/video to a friend or enemy. After putting in your name, the name of your friend and their "crime," a menu titled "Your Victim's Crime" drops down with such options as "sleeping around," "suspected sleeping around," "playing you like a fool" and "breaking your heart." The next drop-down menu, for "Weapon of Choice," features options such as "boot," "knife," "can," "sledgehammer," "rolling pin" and "guillotine." A glamorous shot of Ashanti in a tight gold mini-dress accompanies the "Gotchagram" box.

Once the information is input, users can click on a box to the left that launches a customized UCN news report featuring their information, including the victim's name splattered in blood on a wall, the weapon of choice, the sender's name in a fake newspaper headline and a reference to their home state. The clip ends with a plug for the album and a cartoonish voice reading the caveat, "Ashanti and Universal Music Group do not encourage or condone violence of any kind. This is for parody purposes only."

More than two dozen concerned parents and religious leaders gathered outside the Universal/Motown offices Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles to mount a protest against the promotion, according to organizer Najee Ali. Led by civil-rights organization Project Islamic Hope and its leader, Ali, the group condemned the video and its message of using violence to settle disputes.

"There are a lot of outraged parents who feel that the type of message and imagery that promotes violence as a tool for solving domestic relation problems is inappropriate," Ali said. "Universal should recognize that they have corporate responsibility for promoting their artists and material that they want us to purchase."

Ali said he blames Ashanti and her label for the video and added that he felt it was a "career mistake" to attach herself to this type of imagery.

One of the other organizers of the protest, former radio veteran and BET staffer Paul Porter of the nonpartisan media justice think tank Industry Ears, said the video came to his attention on Monday, and he immediately called Ali. "I questioned not only the content of the video, but also why Universal/Motown would support this effort," Porter said. "The real shock is that Ashanti is squeaky-clean ... and the song has nothing to do with murdering someone, so the video is definitely constructed for shock value, and we feel there's enough violence in our inner cities without you picking your weapon of choice."

A statement released Tuesday through Ashanti's personal publicist, Michelle Huff, explained that "the Web site that Mr. Porter is referring to is not controlled by Ashanti nor is it her creative work. We respect what Mr. Porter is working to accomplish with his organization. But it is important to point out that Ashanti's history of creative expression does not glorify violence at all."

Huff said Ashanti did not come up with the Gotchagram concept — which debuted online more than two months ago — but that the singer supported the label's marketing concept. The video was intended to be a "Saturday Night Live"-style parody, Huff said, and while she reported that "95 percent" of the comments Ashanti has gotten so far have been positive, the singer plans to speak to her label in light of the controversy about possibly taking it down.

Porter said he sees the Gotchagram video as a blatant attention-grabbing stunt meant to shock and boost Ashanti's first-week sales numbers, a tactic he called "creative laziness" on the part of the artist and her label and one he predicted would not work. Porter and Ali are calling for Universal/Motown to pull down the video and the UNC site and issue an apology. The pair are planning another protest next week in New York.

In an interview with SOHH.com in February, Ashanti endorsed the violent imagery in the video. "It matches incredibly with the record," she told the site. "It's very cinematic as opposed to a regular music video. I found out my man is cheating on me, and cut to the story, you find him in a bloody tub." The message is simple, Ashanti told the site: "Don't cheat."

In the video for Ashanti's debut single, "Foolish," the singer re-created the plot from the gangster flick "Goodfellas," with Terrence Howard, Ja Rule and Irv Gotti filling in for Ray Liotta, Paul Sorvino and Robert De Niro.

Now the Long Island beauty is borrowing from a different source for her most recent clip, "The Way That I Love You": Oprah Winfrey's Oxygen Network.

"It's something completely different than anything I've ever done before," Ashanti said of the video. "We're kind of basing the concept on a show called 'Snapped,' which is on the Oh! channel. It's about women who have gotten pushed to the [point] where they feel, I guess, [that it's] necessary to murder their husbands, boyfriends, what have you. It's actually a documentary like [Tru] TV's 'Forensic Files,' but this one is only for women; when women snap they do crazy things. So being that the record is so dramatic and so painful and emotional, I think that the concepts just married each other and it was amazing. The director, Kevin Bray, just brought different twists and different angles out of it, and it was a great thing."

The driving L.T. Hutton-produced track is the first single from Ashanti's upcoming album, The Declaration, due June 3. The full-length is a follow-up to 2004's Concrete Rose.

In the video, Ashanti and the male lead are in a tumultuous relationship, battling back and forth. In the end, though, she takes a dramatic turn toward a solution: She leaves ... but not before putting a good scare into him.

For The Declaration, Ashanti worked with Babyface, Jermaine Dupri, Bryan-Michael Cox, Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke, but she had the best chemistry with Hutton. The two recorded 17 tracks together, with a bulk of them making the album.

"As soon as I heard the first four bars of ['The Way That I Love You'], I was like, 'Oh my gosh,' " she explained. "I took a pen and a pad and I just started jotting down words, and it just kind of poured out. I think that it's such a great record, so many people can relate to it, male, female, and it's deep. It's very different from anything out there, and it's totally different for me as far as production and arrangement and things like that. I've written topics very similar, but this by far is, I guess, kind of next level for me."
