Andrew W.K. Thinking About Birds' Stomachs, Working On Third Album

Andrew W.K.'s mind is cluttered with random thoughts and ruminations. A year and a half into the creative process and Mr. Wilkes-Krier's still in the thick of it; the man whose music has come to epitomize the term "party anthem" continues to generate compositions for his third album, the as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2003's The Wolf. But first, Andrew's got to get his head straight and stop thinking about birds.

"You can point at a bird and say, 'I know what that bird is. That's a blue jay.' Well, sure, that's a kind of bird. But do you really know that bird?" he asked. "Do you know it inside and out? Do you know what it has in its stomach from what it ate that morning? Do you know what it just saw over the course of the day? Do you know where it was born? And let's say you've studied the bird since it was born, and you knew all of that — do you know what it has thought about its experiences? And even if you did know, the split second you pointed at that bird and said 'This bird is this, I am identifying it, I know it,' that bird, in the next second, has lived that much longer. The bird's slightly changed its physical and chemical composition. So then you'd have to know it again. You'd have to constantly re-identify and re-study it. And that's sort of an endless state."

Right. Philosophical musings aside, Andrew's serious about not letting his thoughts infect the typically jovial tone of his festive, careless jingles.

"I often try to remove myself and my own thoughts from the making of the music, or at least have a good amount of skepticism about what I think, and take it all with a grain of salt," he said from the New York studio where he's been embroiled in the album's pre-production. When he's ready to start tracking the disc, Andrew said producer Don Fleming (Posies, Screaming Trees) would join him. "Inasmuch as I can never separate myself from myself, I want to at least humor that possibility in making this music and in doing things in general, and try to question my own take on things and often try to remove myself from the process. So, yeah, I think about all these things. But not when I make music."

W.K. claims to have at least 18 songs written, with another 10 in various stages of completion. His own album's also been interrupted by side production gigs; he recently finished To Live and Shave in L.A.'s forthcoming record, Noon and Eternity, on which he also performed. W.K. said he'd written more for this album — which he hopes to have in stores before the summer, either preceded or followed by a U.S. tour — than he had for 2002's I Get Wet and The Wolf. But Andrew doesn't feel much like nattering about what his new album's going to sound like.

"Why would you want to expect anything?" he wondered. "Wouldn't it be equally or perhaps more exciting to expect something that's impossible to expect? I've really enjoyed being able to see movies, listen to albums, look at pictures and anticipate the experience of it — to really be excited to look, hear it, see it, whatever it is. What will really excite me is when I can almost expect not to be able to expect anything. It's like when you go see a movie and you're like, 'I have no idea what this is going to be like.' It's not so much focused on not knowing what it's going to be, as it's about giving something the benefit of the doubt."

Andrew said fans can look for tracks such as "I'm a Vagabond," "I Want to See You Go Wild," "I'm Not Going to Bed," "Pushing Drugs," "You Will Remember Tonight" and "Kicks and Bricks" to make the cut. The latter two tracks can be accessed through W.K.'s Web site. Before he can release the LP, Andrew needs to align himself with a record label, having severed ties with Island Records more than a year ago.

Andrew also has a DVD on the way. "Who Knows?" is set for a January 24 release and will feature live footage shot over four years on the road, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, an Andrew W.K. fan tribute, outtakes of Andrew performing "I Get Wet" and "additional footage of Andrew's antics," according to his reps.

The Strokes, Sonic Youth, Blondie, Andrew W.K. and Sean Lennon are among the artists on board for a benefit concert in memory of the late Johnny and Joey Ramone.

"Be Well: Ramones Beat on Cancer" will be held on October 8 — which would have been Johnny's 56th birthday — at the New York club Spirit. All proceeds from the event will go to the Cedars-Sinai Cancer Research Center and the Lymphoma Research Foundation. Johnny lost his five-year battle with prostate cancer last week, (see "Ramones Guitarist Johnny Ramone Dies At Age 55") while frontman Joey died after a lengthy battle with lymphoma in 2001 (see "Punk Pioneer Joey Ramone Dead At 49").

The concert — organized by Johnny Ramone (before his death) with longtime Ramones creative director Arturo Vega — will also feature an exhibition of band memorabilia, personal items and photographs. Original Ramones drummer Tommy Erdelyi, the lone surviving member of the band's first lineup, will make an appearance, and New York Dolls frontman David Johansen, Ramones producer Daniel Rey and former Ramones bassist C.J. Ramone are also scheduled to perform.

"It was Johnny's idea, and we were aware that Johnny was in risk of dying. I just wanted to make sure he wanted us to continue in the event of his death," Vega said. "I asked him over and over if he wanted to continue planning, and said he didn't want to let down the fans and the people involved."

"It's sad, because they had been planning on doing this since May. It wasn't something that we just put together," added Strokes manager Ryan Gentles. "It came from Johnny and Arturo. They had it planned for so long, and he just passed away the other day, so it's really sad. There was a chance he was going to be there."

Tickets for the event are $50 and can be purchased via Ticketmaster, Wanttickets.com or at the club's box office.

New Releases: John Mayer, Pennywise, Seal, David Banner, My Morning Jacket, Andrew W.K. & More

Even though he didn't win any Moonmen at this year's VMAs, Johnny Cash got a lot of love from the musical community in the weeks leading up to the ceremony. Now his late wife, June Carter Cash, gets some shine too with Wildwood Flower, her final recording sessions and a collection of songs on which she and Johnny sing duets many times over.

In other news memorializing country singer powerhouses, the tribute album Remembering Patsy Cline features interpretations of Cline's songs by women including Norah Jones, Natalie Cole, Lee Ann Womack and K.D. Lang.

And as if that weren't heavy enough, there's Heavier Things, the title of John Mayer's follow-up to Room for Squares, which features the single "Bigger Than My Body." On the album, Mayer also collaborates with guest drummer ?uestlove from the Roots on the album's first track, "Clarity."

Now that summer's over, it's time for a New Romance, and the timing couldn't be better, because these days Seattle outfit Pretty Girls Make Graves find a little more emo in their punk. Meanwhile, the only love celebrity DJ Mark Ronson is giving is to the guest stars on his debut album, Here Comes the Fuzz, which features Weezer's Rivers Cuomo on "I Suck," Mos Def and M.O.P on "On the Run," and Ghostface Killah and Nate Dogg on the lead single, "Oh Wee." The "Fighting Temptations" soundtrack features songs by Missy Elliott, P. Diddy and movie star herself, Beyoncé, both as a solo artist as well as a member of Destiny's Child.

Last but never least is the earnest, face-bashing, air-splitting party animal Andrew W.K.'s The Wolf. Songs like "Really in Love," "I Love Music" and yes, even "Make Sex," show that W.K. has moved away from the party theme (with the exception of "Long Live the Party") and onto the subject of love this time out. Where do you think "Totally Stupid" fits in?

And you thought Andrew W.K. was scary.

The organizers behind the Vans Warped Tour are tapping into the world of cinema by filming a "teenage slasher film" during the trek. (Click here for photos from the tour.)

"It's about a disgruntled employee," said Kevin Lyman, founder of the tour that mixes extreme sports and punk/ska music. "The guy gets fired the first day and he comes back and puts a curse on the Warped Tour. Then all these things happen."

The tentatively titled "Punk Rock Holocaust" will be shot by Backseat Conceptions.

"It's going to be a lot of shadows and lurking in the movie and mostly just staff dying at certain points of unimaginably horrible deaths at the hands of the [murderer]," Lyman said with a laugh.

A spokesperson for the Warped Tour, which kicked off June 19 in Boise, Idaho (see "Where Mouth Geysers Meet Cheesy Macaroni — Warped (Tour) Indeed"), said every band on the tour, ranging from the Suicide Machines to Andrew W.K. to Pennywise, have been asked to participate.

"We're trying to have fun and trying to remind ourselves that it is a business but to have a lot of fun this year," Lyman said.

The tour, in its ninth year, runs through August 10 at the Asbury Park Lot in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

CINCINNATI — It was as if the tattooed hand of a punk rock god reached down and anointed Andrew W.K. The hard partying rocker was enthusiastically playing his anthem "I Get Wet" as the skies opened up and a torrential downpour put an early end to the eighth stop on this year's Vans Warped Tour. He always sports a maniacal smirk and a dirty T-shirt, but even W.K., surrounded on the stage by a dozen head-banging fans, couldn't help but laugh. (Click here for photos from The Warped Tour.)

Just one week into a grueling cross-country summer trek, the ninth edition of the punk and extreme-sports tour experienced both kinds of Warped weather: intense heat and drenching rains. You would have never known it, though, from the goofy grins on the faces of the 50 pumped-up bands or the 7,000 waterlogged and sunburned fans who braved the unpredictable weather to take part in punk rock summer camp. There was Rancid's Tim Armstrong, rocking his band's afternoon set in a leather jacket, AFI's Davey Havok in vinyl pants and a long-sleeved mesh shirt, and Used singer Bert McCracken not letting a little sweat bother him as the heat made the red face-paint across his eyes drip all over his face.

Though it was inconceivably plastered with more signage than Cincinnati's new baseball stadium (not that the fans would know, since nearly everyone was wearing a shirt promoting their favorite band), what continues to separate the Warped Tour from other summer festivals is its egalitarian vibe. Indie label bands such as Rise Against, Vaux, Eleventeen and the Unseen mixed with up-and-coming major-label acts in the massive pavilion, while the Ataris, Face to Face and Rancid humbly hit the midway. Everyone got 30 minutes, regardless of whether your name was Less Than Jake, Anatomy of a Ghost or Scallywagon. Coupled with the cheap ticket price ($25), Warped might not be much of a payday for the bands, but it could teach its fellow festival tours a lesson or two about keeping fans happy.

Yes, it's cheesy to have Kraft Macaroni and Cheese on-the-go samples right next to a stage and Yoo-Hoo-branded beach balls ping-ponging across the crowd. But it's kind of cool to find bands like Simple Plan, who could easily headline the city's biggest club, playing early afternoon sets on side stages and not complaining about it. It's also cool to see veteran Irish punkers the Dropkick Murphys getting one of the most raucous receptions of the day with their bagpipe, beer-and-blitz chord sing-alongs.

The Used got things cranking early thanks to McCracken's spastic stage presence. Spewing water into the air with his mouth and making huge geysers, the scrawny singer played the part of a slightly crazed arena rocker as he got the audience to shout along to such cathartic punk ballads as "The Taste of Ink" and "Blue and Yellow."

Like many of the acts, McCracken told the crowd that the Cincinnati stop was the best one on the tour so far, in between his bouts of thrashing around the stage, stringy hair plastered to his gaunt face.

It was a totally different scene across the midway though, where AFI looked like a group of daytime ghouls who'd accidentally opened their crypts a bit early. Singer Havok, with his pasty face and jet-black hair, looked like a cross between the Cult's Ian Astbury and Elvira, and definitely like someone more used to dark clubs than bright daylight shows. As he yelped the lyrics to the band's breakthrough hit, "Girl's Not Grey," and "The Leaving Song, Pt. II," Havok repeatedly performed what was the unofficial, but mandatory mantra of the day, "who-ooh-ooh." That simple pop refrain could be heard from nearly every band on the bill, from Police-like reggae punkers Maxeen to SoCal old-schoolers Face to Face and Detroit garage rockers the Fags.

Bowling for Soup did their best to lighten things up with canned stage patter that would make Poison blush ("Look at all the great t---ies out there!"), but Rancid showed the kids how it's really done with a hit-packed set that snuck in just as the blazing sun gave way to thunderclouds. Singer Armstrong paid homage to his heroes in the Ramones by entering the stage in a black leather jacket, as well as black pants, a black baseball hat and black sunglasses, not removing the jacket until the fifth song, despite the choking heat. The band blitzed through energetic versions of "Journey to the End of the East Bay," "Ruby Soho," "Roots Radicals" and "Maxwell Murder." During the latter, bassist Matt Freeman ripped off a nimble-fingered, jazzy solo that seemed to even surprise singer/guitarist Lars Frederiksen. The band unveiled the new song "Red Hot Moon," from their upcoming album, Indestructable (August 26), and invited pal Skinhead Rob on stage to do a mid-song rap.

Once the rain began to fall, the midway offered more than mac 'n cheese, CDs and T-shirts to the punks whose liberty spikes were beginning to sag. Nearly every act took time to sign T-shirts and CDs for fans and there were dozens of booths supporting political causes and selling the usual festival fare.

Parents could even dip into the air-conditioned "Reverse Daycare" tent and sink into comfy chairs while "About Schmidt" played on a big-screen TV. With so much music, the "extreme" part of the tour — demos from professional skaters and BMX riders — was shunted off to a corner of the midway and seemed less prominent than in the past.

By the time the Ataris hit the stage around 5 p.m., the rain seemed like it was there to stay. The hard-cores held on, but if the young crowd recognized that the band was covering a Don Henley song with its punked-up take on "Boys of Summer," they didn't show it. They did, however, react wildly when spazz rockers S.T.U.N. laid waste to Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall," especially when singer Christiane J. amended the lyrics to "another brick through your wall!" Huddling under the pavilion to avoid the rain, hundreds of fans watched as J. hurled his microphone across the stage, perched himself precariously on the kick drum and danced around like a disco insect to songs such as "Movement," during which he repeatedly howled the refrain, "We are just a moment away!"

Glassjaw and Poison the Well got washed out as the side stages closed early, but, in the end, there was Warped sophomore W.K., whipping the soaked crowd into a frenzy with "Party Hard," and looking up at the rain as if it were just another party favor on his nonstop summer punk bash.

Andrew W.K. fans have good reason to look forward to his next album, since it was made especially for them.

"This album is a direct dedication to the people who love the music that we're making," Andrew said recently. "Not necessarily just about my music; just passionate people who love music."

It's hard to imagine anyone being more passionate about breakneck tempos, celebratory choruses and energetic sing-alongs than Mr. Wilkes-Krier, who embodied the term "party anthem" on 2001's I Get Wet. And, given the sincerity with which he speaks of its follow-up, September 9's The Wolf, it seems Andrew W.K. would be absolutely devastated if people didn't appreciate it.

"My main goal here is to satisfy people," he said. "It's not to shock or scare. It wasn't to be provocative — it was to be enjoyable and satisfying. And I really want to please people with this album and make them as happy as I can."

Those who enjoyed I Get Wet should be immediately attracted to The Wolf, as the album begins with a similar vibe. Swirling symphonic aggression combines with stomping rally calls and a punk anthem to pick up where the last album left off. Then it takes a turn toward fuller and more dynamic song structures for a sound closer to the arena-rock grandeur of late '70s/early '80s bands like Supertramp and Asia.

Andrew, naturally, has his own unique way of conveying the 12-track album's progression from familiar to uncharted territory. "You kind of start out on the road and you're driving along thinking, 'I love this part of town. There's that store I love. There's that old corner I used to hang out on. There's my school. Oh, there's my friend; I love that guy.'

"And then you keep driving. 'Whoa, this is a part of town I've never been to.' And then you drive some more and you're like, 'Where am I? What's going on? This is insane.' And before you know it, you're driving through space."

Though "Never Let Down" will serve as album's radio single, the two-disc CD/DVD single "Tear It Up" is scheduled to drop two months before the album. Due July 15, the package will include the LP's songs "Tear It Up" and "Your Rules" on the audio disc and live performance footage plus all Andrew W.K.'s videos — "Party Hard," "She Is Beautiful" and "We Want Fun" among them — on the DVD.

The song "Tear It Up," like most things surrounding Andrew W.K., can be interpreted a variety of ways. "You can tear up a piece of paper," he began rambling. "You can tear up an orange or banana peel. For me, it was about making noise music. It's about being really excited about what we're doing now ... most of all, as always, having a lot of fun.

"It's also about regretting things and also wanting to learn from things," he continued, growing more excited with each sentence. "When you do something that maybe wasn't the best thing to do at the time, you don't want to hold onto those feelings of guilt, shame or embarrassment, as much as you'd like to learn from them. So it's a little bit about that conflict."

And just when it appears that one is able to grasp his meaning, Andrew returns to form. "It's also a little bit about tumbling ... trundling ... somewhat about bundling, but that's more subtle. You know, it's got a very heavy tempo. And that's the thing that's most exciting to me."

See what "Tear It Up" and other selections from The Wolf are all about when Andrew channels his excitement onstage at the Vans Warped Tour, which he'll ride until the July 31 stop in Brockton, Massachusetts.
