For months now, rumors have been swirling that All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter was working with Rihanna on her upcoming album in a partnership made in hitmaker heaven. After all, Ritter already has an impressive string of radio smashes to his credit ("Swing, Swing," "Dirty Little Secret," "Move Along" and, most recently, "Gives You Hell,"), and Rihanna, well, she's Rihanna.

The only problem was, neither party had actually commented on those rumors. Until last Friday, that is. As Ritter and AAR guitarist Nick Wheeler rehearsed with Wale and UCB for their performance on Sunday's VMAs, MTV News asked him about working with Rihanna. And he was more than willing to talk about the collaboration.

"I actually met with her a couple of weeks ago and the funny thing is, I actually don't remember half of it," Ritter laughed. "I remember the first half of meeting her, but then, as the night progressed, somebody decided to drink too much Jameson."

"But seriously, she's such a sweet girl that I'm gonna try to give her a little piece of my heart," he went on. "I wanna get in a room with her, and I wanna see what flies. I've got some songs for her, like, little things written, and I wanna see what she wants. See if she wants something aggressive and rock, and I've also kinda got some really fun, clubby ideas."

But that's not the only bit of collaborating Ritter and Wheeler have been doing as of late. They apparently also wrote a song for Weezer's upcoming album, Raditude, due October 27.

"We also just did a track with Rivers [Cuomo] for the new Weezer record!" Ritter announced. "When he asked us to do it, I fell on my knees and cried. We were playing this guy's songs when we were 13 at parties."

"A few weeks ago, we [went] to his house — so that was cool — sat in a room with three guitars, and just kinda, Ty had a little idea, and we kind of riffed on it," Wheeler added. "And then we never heard anything. So we're shooting our video for our next single, 'I Wanna,' yesterday, and our A&R guy comes to the shoot with a CD of the finished version, and I was like, 'Oh, so that happened!'

"And so I shot [Cuomo] an e-mail saying what a privilege it was working with him, and this sounds great, you guys did a great job with the song, you know, stuff like that," Wheeler continued. "And he replied back, and at the end, it said, 'Definitely miss your guitar playing on the final version.' So, I saved that e-mail, and it's probably gonna stay in my star file for quite a while."

As if Kanye West already didn't have enough people giving you flak following his onstage antics at Sunday night's Video Music Awards, well, allow us to toss a couple more names onto the pile: Green Day and the All-American Rejects, both of whom witnessed West's hijacking of Taylor Swift's acceptance speech. Both had about the same reaction immediately afterward — they were dumbfounded.

"I don't know ... it was just kind of a bizarre moment. Kanye's always unpredictable," Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong told MTV News backstage. "But you can't be responsible for every dumb thing you say."

"Someone always does something crazy at the Video Music Awards," bassist Mike Dirnt added. "It's kind of a shame for a young gal and her moment, but at the end of the day, anything goes here."

The Rejects were a bit harsher with their criticism when we spoke to guitarist Nick Wheeler and frontman Tyson Ritter immediately following their performance with Wale and the VMA house band.

"That was just plain rude," Wheeler snorted.

"But there are a lot of rude people out there. People in general are rude. I think everyone has rude moments, and I think he's gonna be really apologetic," Ritter added. "I mean, Jesus, she's like 15! Who picks on 15-year-olds?!? I mean, God knows I have, but I always say I'm sorry, so I'm sure he's going to apologize." (Swift is actually 19, but we get his point.)

And, of course, West ultimately did just that, posting an ALL CAPS (so you know he meant it) mea culpa on his blog following the VMAs.

Along with UCB, Wale is brining along a whole bunch of artists along for his VMA house-band ride. The Washington, D.C., rapper and his crew will be performing a series of originals and covers that will definitely keep the Video Music Awards crowd rocking all night.

One of his collaborators, Solange Knowles, gushed to MTV News, "Wale is a good friend of mine. And he's a phenomenal artist."

Meanwhile, Kid Cudi — who revealed that he'll use his VMA performance to "celebrate" last year's house turntablist, the late DJ AM — said he looks forward to working with his "homie" Wale. "Wale is one of those innovative artists," he said. "This is like a big deal, so you know I'm glad to be a part of it, man. That's the homie."

Two members of the All-American Rejects are looking at this as an opportunity to mix their pop/punk with Wale's hip-hop sensibilities.

"They are incredible musicians, and it's actually really cool to get to do this," guitarist Nick Wheeler said.

The band's frontman, Tyson Ritter, added: "Every time you sort of get to cross the streams of rock and anything else, I think some cool fusion happens."

Like all the hot performances set to go down on Sunday, when the show goes live from New York's Radio City Music Hall, Wale's house-band set is all very top-secret. Butt, if Wale's VMA rehearsal Thursday was any indication, those covers could include songs by Britney Spears, Coldplay and Kings of Leon.

The 2009 MTV Video Music Awards air live this Sunday, September 13, at 9 p.m. ET, but New York is celebrating the VMAs all week long! Stay tuned for party coverage, concert reports, behind-the-scenes updates and more.

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey — At the Izod Center on Saturday (May 16), fans gathered for a night filled with pop music from Kelly Clarkson, Ciara, Jesse McCartney and the Black Eyed Peas, rock from the All American Rejects and hip-hop from Soulja Boy Tell'Em.

Hometown boy Jesse McCartney got the party started with "Leavin'," but it was when he took off his sunglasses and sang "Beautiful Soul" that the sing-along really began. Jesse slowed it down for "It's Over," which he called his favorite song off his album depature. But it was clear the fan fave was "How Do You Sleep?"

Soulja Boy Tell'Em played a very short set, which included "Crank That" followed by "Turn My Swag On." Then he requested all cell phones out as he took off his shirt to perform "Kiss Me Thru the Phone."

"Gossip Girl" star Taylor Momsen surprised the crowd, coming out to introduce the All American Rejects &#8212 while also plugging her band, the Pretty Reckless. AAR rocked the show with "Dirty Little Secret." Lead singer Tyson Ritter wanted to hear everyone scream for "Swing, Swing," and he showed some love for kids in the cheap seats before "Move Along." Then he broke into a spoken-word version of "Gives You Hell" before the band kicked in. After doing their new single, "The Wind Blows," Tyson did his best Nixon impression and walked out.

Ciara brought some girl power with ironically titled "Like a Boy." Then she showed everyone how limber she is by doing splits as she went into "Goodies." Unfortunately, her "Love Sex Magic" collaboration was left Justin Timberlake-less, but the sexy moves she performed along with her dancers (which included a Lady Gaga lookalike) more than made up for it.

Keeping the girl power alive, Kelly Clarkson's killer voice rocked the room with "Since U Been Gone." The set included lots of new songs off her new album, All I Ever Wanted, peppered with older hits, like "Miss Independent." Before "I Do Not Hook Up," Kelly listed her exceptions to that rule: Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. "Walk Away," "Already Gone" and "If I Can't Have You" also were fan favorites leading up to her finale "My Life Would Suck Without You."

Sean Paul graced the stage to introduce Flo Rida, who then made everyone dance to "In the Ayer." Flo asked the crowd to sing along for "Jump." He brought some female fans onstage for "the record that made him international," "Low," and dedicated "Right Round" to all the single ladies.

The Black Eyed Peas were the night's final act. Their set was filled with hits like "Don't Phunk With My Heart" and "Let's Get It Started." Their theme of the night was all about finding the party people in the house, and "Pump It" helped in the search. After determining the "Humps" were controlling the room, they sang that song. Calling their L.A. crowd at last week's Wango Tango "wiggity wiggity wack," the Peas dedicated "Where Is the Love?" to the room, just before bringing the "Boom Boom Pow.

We're still not really clear if the long-rumored Blink-182/Weezer tour is happening or not, and now there's another band to add to the (so far) hypothetical bill: the All-American Rejects.

Or, at least, that's what AAR were hinting at when we spoke to them this past weekend at KIIS-FM's Wango Tango festival in Irvine, California.

"We will be going out with a nondescript band that is rumored to be reuniting ... that's about all we can say about that," Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter smiled. "But it's going to be a big deal, and everybody's going to be there, so, 'Hey,' in advance."

When we pressed him for more details about the mysterious reuniting band — like, you know, is it made up of three dudes named Mark, Tom and Travis — he played coy.

"There's at least three ... I think it's a ska band, so it might be 20. I don't know," he laughed. "It's not Sum-41. They're on hiatus."

Dang. So are the Rejects joining Blink and Weezer for a summer jaunt? Well, all three acts are signed to labels under the Universal Music Group umbrella, so it would make sense (a spokesperson for Blink's label, Interscope, could not be reached for comment by press time). And it would fill AAR's summer schedule, which became rather empty when a headlining slot on the long-running Honda Civic Tour fell through — a process Ritter was more than happy to fill us in on, in his own, uh, unique way.

"It was supposed to be the Honda Civic Tour. We were actually supposed to get a Honda Civic car ...[but] Old Man Civic calls me up and goes, 'Hey, I can't foot the bill.' I go, 'Click' — hung up on him. So, whatever, we're not doing that tour anymore. Gimme some Ford. Gimme some Chrysler," he laughed. "Maybe we can do a tour with Coffee-Mate, because everybody uses creamer."

When you think of the creators of a state's official song, veteran psychedelic rockers the Flaming Lips — who over the past 25 years have released songs with titles like "Jesus Shootin' Heroin" and "Talkin' 'Bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues," as well as their biggest hit, "She Don't Use Jelly" — are probably not the first artists to come to mind.

And yet, the band's 2002 track "Do You Realize??" has been named the official rock song of their home state of Oklahoma, beating out such songs written or recorded by Oklahomans as "Heartbreak Hotel" and "After Midnight."

"We have an official state folk song and a state country song. With as many outstanding rock artists as we have in Oklahoma, it was time to recognize this music as well," said State Senator Mike Schulz, according to The Associated Press.

More than 21,000 votes were cast online for a list of 10 songs selected by a panel of experts, according to the AP. The winner was announced Monday in the Oklahoma Senate.

"I never gave it that much thought," band leader Wayne Coyne told the AP, adding that it was an honor to have been nominated, "and everything else is just extra. We're in this just to have fun and we wind up winning."

"Do You Realize??" — which was featured in a Land Rover commercial — was written by bandmembers Coyne, Steven Drozd and Michael Ivins, along with longtime producer Dave Fridmann, and hails from the band's 2002 album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. The song's lyrics, which do not mention Oklahoma, have a melancholy but ultimately uplifting theme ("Do you realize ... that you have the most beautiful face ... we're floating in space ... that happiness makes you cry ... that everyone you know someday will die?"). The band's latest release was the soundtrack to its long-percolating film, "Christmas on Mars."

In 2008, the Legislature adopted a resolution outlining the voting process, according to the AP. The Oklahoma Historical Society conducted a competition to select the official state rock song and Oklahomans nominated 454 songs. A panel then narrowed the list to 10, and the people of the state cast their ballots. Out of the 21,061 votes cast, 10,738, or nearly 51 percent, picked "Do You Realize??"

Other finalists were "Let's Have a Party," recorded by Oklahoman Wanda Jackson; "Walk, Don't Run," recorded by the Ventures; "Home Sweet Oklahoma," written and recorded by Oklahoman Leon Russell; "Oklahoma," by the Call; and "Move Along," by the All-American Rejects.

The "official state rock song" is not a terribly common category: According to several online sources, the only others states to have them are Ohio (the McCoys' 1960s hit "Hang on Sloopy") and Washington (Richard Berry's "Louie Louie").

The All-American Rejects just shot the video for "Gives You Hell," the first single off their upcoming
When the World Comes Down album, and here to provide you with a brief synopsis is frontman Tyson Ritter:

"It opens with me laying there looking like a bag of rock and roll hit me, and I get woken up by a light that comes through the window. ... And there's an alternate version of me, like this stiff J.Crew guy, and he's out to get the alternate version of me and our band. It's kind of like 'Bill and Ted, Part 2,' " he explained. "The video basically pits one neighbor against another terrible neighbor, who lives on a completely opposite schedule. He's not on the grid — he's not on, like the song says, 'a 9-to-5 pace.' And this guy's living the cookie-cutter life, with his white picket fence, and his wife who brings him lemonade when he's washing the car. So it's kind of like the clash of those worlds; only at the end, there's kind of a twist, where the two worlds kind of flip-flop. Yeah."

Sounds, uh, awesome? Luckily, MTV News was on set with AAR last week in Los Angeles, and we can attest to the fact that the "Hell" video is actually much better than Ritter's explanation lets on. Directed by Marc Webb (who, in addition to his work with acts like My Chemical Romance, Fergie and Evanescence, helmed AAR's video for "Move Along"), the clip features the Rejects gallivanting about — and summarily destroying — a house that's littered with vintage amps and supermodels (it's also painted with stripes for whatever reason).

Next door, the so-called "J.Crew" Rejects look on disgustedly and try to ruin the real Rejects' good times, until — like Ritter said — the great conflict at clip's end, when everything is solved thanks to the unifying power of rock. Or something like that. It's all in keeping with the message of the song, which, once again, Ritter was kind enough to explain:

"It's kind of this tongue-in-cheek way of looking at someone you hate, whether it's your mom, for some reason, or it's your teacher at school, or it's your boss at work," he said. "It's just someone who makes you struggle, and it's giving them the finger, you know what I mean?"

Totally. And though Ritter might take a less-than-serious approach to describing his song and his video, he said that When the World Comes Down (due December 16) is anything but.

"When the World Comes Down is ... kind of about the times right now, about the struggle of, uh, everything. Whether it's how crappy your school's getting or, I don't know, anything," he said. "It's, like, also about how tomorrow could be better. I don't know, it could be apocalyptic. It's like the apocalyptic, romantic view on the world. That sounds about right."

On Thursday night in Denver, Democratic presidential nominee Senator Barack Obama accepted his party's nomination with a historic speech. The address, which took place 45 years after Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have a Dream" speech, left the Illinois senator's high-profile supporters in awe.

"The imagery and the message behind Obama's speech was more powerful than any that I have ever seen in my lifetime," Chamillionaire told MTV News. "It's really refreshing to actually be able to witness history unfolding like this."

It was a sentiment shared by many of the other celebrities and regular folks who heard what Obama had to say. "[It was] a complete inspiration. I have high hopes for our next president," All-American Rejects frontman Tyson Ritter said.

Meanwhile, longtime Obama supporter Oprah Winfrey told the press after Obama finished his speech that "I cried my eyelashes off. I think it's the most powerful thing I have ever experienced." She added: "He's not an African-American candidate. He's a candidate for Americans."

Pete Wentz summed it up in his MTV Newsroom live-blog entry: "It's strange to get the feeling that you will remember the exact moment and place you were sitting when someone gives a speech."

Also backstage after the speech was Kanye West, who said, according to several media accounts, "It changed my life." Earlier in the week, Kanye admitted that he wished his late mother, Donda West, could have been around to see Obama's historic presidential run. "It's an incredible time to be around. I wish my momma could have seen this day."

"I've never gotten so many chills in my life," Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman told MTV News. "There's the chills you get from hearing an incredible melody in a song, from seeing the best movie you've ever seen in your life, but this was something different. I don't want to this to sound like a joke, but Obama has coin face. His face will look amazing on a silver dollar. And I want to be spending that silver dollar."

His bandmate Patrick Stump appreciated Obama's honesty and integrity in the speech. "He talks about hope, but he actually delivers. He has supports, facts, figures and the ba--s to say it all at the risk of his political standing," he said. "His speeches convince me that he is an honest politician, possibly the first in a desperately long time."

During MTV News' live blog of Obama's speech, Kenna declared Obama the winner after hearing his moving speech about bringing change to Washington: "There is going to be a paradigm shift in the world as we know it. He just won."

Don't miss out on the action: MTV News and our Street Team '08 will be on the ground at the Republican National Convention to sort through all the speeches, streamers and ceremony and find the information you need to choose our next president.

The stakes are decidedly high for the All-American Rejects this time around: Their last album, 2005's Move Along, sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S., spawned a trio of hit singles and established the band as one of the nation's foremost purveyors of radio-ready rock. Frontman Tyson Ritter is painfully aware of all these things, which is why he's adopted this ethos for the follow-up:

"I don't want to have any regrets, dude. I worry about stuff like, 'Is this song the best thing we've ever done?' " he laughed. "There have been points where we've had a bunch of good songs, but good doesn't make the cut for this record. I find myself going, 'Sh--, if this isn't a good song, I'm gonna kill myself.' "

Now that's commitment to one's craft. And though he was kidding (we think), there's no denying the fact that Ritter and the rest of AAR are currently standing on the precipice of something really huge with album number three, which they've been working on in earnest since June of last year.

"I think we all realized that we had a pretty huge opportunity here," Ritter said. "When we were making the last record, we were staying at a $30-a-night motel, and I would think, 'F---, if the label doesn't give us approval to go into the studio, am I gonna be working at Blockbuster?' This time, we don't have to worry about that, so we're really taking advantage, you know? We've put in the work on this one.

"We started out writing at this cabin in South Carolina, on the same mountain where they filmed 'Deliverance.' We did about five or six songs there. Then we went to Vancouver, did another five or six there. Then we ended up in San Francisco, staying in the Haight-Ashbury," he continued. "Then we went into the studio, didn't like what we had and put the record on hold for three months. Then [guitarist] Nick [Wheeler] and I got in a bus, drove from Portland, Maine, to Yellowstone National Park, and wrote more songs. We were like, 'We got a couple of good ones, where are we gonna find the next ones?' "

Luckily, they did, and they've settled down in Atlanta with producer Eric Valentine (Good Charlotte, Maroon 5), to put the finishing touches on the album, which Ritter says may be called either Hope This Gives You Hell or Mona Lisa, both of which also happen to be the titles of songs on the record.

"There's a lot on the record, man," Ritter said, before listing the highlights. "We got a song called 'The Real World,' and it's f---ing heavy and a little bit political. ... It's very obvious what we're getting at on it. 'Mona Lisa,' we're gonna track that one live, all acoustic. Um, what else? 'Another Heart Calls,' 'Hope It Gives You Hell,' 'Damn Girl' — that one I've talked about before, but it's still the jam, man! 'Believe,' which is this really heavy rock song, 'Breaking's What the Heart Is For.' There's a ton of stuff, man."

As such, the Rejects are still wrapping production on the album. Ritter finished vocals two days ago and said he hopes the entire thing will be done by August. They are currently working on a cover concept, which the frontman described as "crayons making the AAR logo, only it's melting. ... It's kind of like a metaphor for where we're going for with this record. ... We love the kids, but hopefully we're gonna melt the crayons."

And just when will fans be able to hear this crayon-melting album? Well, in theory, "around Thanksgiving," though to be honest, Ritter couldn't care less. He's just glad that the whole thing is about to be finished.

"I don't worry about that stuff. It'll be great, and people will get to hear it. And since labels are sucking right now, because we're one of the few bands that were actually doing real well before the sh-- hit the fan, hopefully they'll give the record the push it deserves," he said. "It's like everything is working out for this one. This record is like fate falling into my lap and giving me [sexual favors]."

IRVINE, California — The second-annual Bamboozle Left rolled into Southern California over the weekend, bringing some big names and fresh new talent with it.

One of the biggest draws of the two-day fest was Paramore, who attracted throngs of fans to their stage on Saturday. Just before the lights went up, a low rumble of "Par-a-more" arose from the crowd and dissolved into screams as the lights went up and Hayley Williams bounced onstage. The pint-size rock star with the larger-than-life voice rambunctiously jumped around the stage, with her fire-engine-red hair flailing around her. Fans ate up the performance, singing along and duplicating her moves.

Seconds after Paramore finished their set, current tourmates Jimmy Eat World took to the stage. As the guys burst into their hit "Sweetness" from the 2001 album Bleed American, the crowd joined in with every cry of "Are you listening? Whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh." The group boasted the biggest and most age-diverse crowd of the festival by far.

The All-American Rejects and their ever-so-animated frontman, Tyson Ritter, closed out Saturday night by calling the Bamboozle fans "the hoodie generation." He then commanded that the crowd put their hoods up. Almost instantly, the crowd transformed from an endless array of hairstyles into a sea of black, white and grey dots. Ritter then debuted a new acoustic song called "Mona Lisa," which the guys joked before the set would be leaked onto YouTube by Sunday. The song will be part of their new album, which they are hoping to debut in September. The album has not yet been named, but the band assures that it will not be called Remember Us, as was reported in the Bamboozle program.

Pop-punk band the Audition were a crowd-pleasing favorite on Saturday too, as their soulful undertones and on-point performance transformed the audience's typical mosh-pit moves into the writhing body movements of lead singer Danny Stevens.

Hawthorne Heights took the stage Sunday afternoon for their first show since the accidental death of guitarist Casey Calvert in November. Calvert died due to a mixture of prescribed antidepressants and anxiety and pain medications. Fans wore "In Loving Memory of Casey Calvert" T-shirts in support of Hawthorne Heights, who thanked them for their well-wishes and played a song in Casey's memory. After the set, fans lined up to meet the band and expressed their condolences and encouragement in person.

While Bamboozle Left marked the first show back for Hawthorne Heights, it marked the last for My Chemical Romance. After spending the past two years on tour promoting The Black Parade, MCR are overdue for a break and a new album. They played the final set of the festival and gave concertgoers something to remember. As the band began to play the title track from Parade, the stage went black with a spotlight on lead singer Gerard Way, who acted as a conductor of the audience. The crowd sang the entire first verse without missing a beat.

With tens of thousands of people and a handful of rock bands playing, there was rarely a quiet moment, but Escape the Fate frontman Craig Mabbitt definitely silenced the crowd Sunday afternoon. In the middle of the set, Mabbitt dropped his mic, climbed the light tower 20 feet in the air and threw himself backward into the crowd. The crowd gasped, then going silent with confusion, shock and worry. Mabbitt's bandmates continued to play as the fans awaited his fate. After what seemed like several minutes, Mabbitt finally emerged from the crowd seemingly uninjured and finished the set as two stripper-esque dancers joined him onstage.

Jeffree Star transformed his stage into a West Hollywood rave on Sunday night. The audience watched wide-eyed and completely transfixed as the 6-foot-tall, pink-haired cross-dresser pranced around the stage in black booty shorts and 5-inch stilettos. Star definitely had the most controversial and original performance of the festival.
