'American Idol' Voters 'Were Wrong' On Jessica Sanchez, Steven Tyler Says

Thursday night's "American Idol" turned out to be the most shocking episode of the season thus far, proving one sure thing: America got it all wrong this week.

The judges were quick to point that out when they unanimously decided to save 16-year-old singing prodigy Jessica Sanchez before she could even finish her last-chance performance song after receiving the fewest votes.

Sanchez, who has impressed the judges week after week with renditions of songs well beyond her years, "slayed the biggest fish of the night," according to Randy Jackson, with her performance of "Stuttering" by Jazmine Sullivan on Wednesday night. She even had guest mentor Akon predicting legend status one day, only fueling the fire that the singer, a.k.a. Bebe Chez, was well on her way to becoming a title hopeful.

So what went wrong? "Well, I think [America] thought she was safe," explained Jackson, who stopped by backstage to speak on Sanchez's behalf. "I think they thought she was safe, I'm sure, and I think they thought Joshua was safe because those two alone, with Colton and some of the others, have been the most consistent. So, you know, yeah, I think they just forgot."

Probably the most inconsistent of the final seven who was a sure bet to be the one sent packing last night was Hollie Cavanagh. Despite her strong vocals, her nerves and stiff stage presence have led the little English southern belle to the bottom three for weeks now. But after her less-than-perfect performance of "Perfect" Wednesday night, she dodged the bullet completely this time around thanks to her devoted fans.

"She's got a lot of fans out there. A lot of people love her. I mean, look, all of these kids are very talented, and you just said it a minute ago," Jackson said, turning to judge Steven Tyler. "They're all individual, they're all different."

"I mean, the proof is that one sings great, the other one's style is crazy great," added Tyler, comparing Cavanagh and Sanchez. "And then you got Elise, who just laughs all the time and just takes it just so effortlessly free. And there's just so many different singers out there. That's why it's hard for me now. I like to let America judge. Tonight they were wrong."

So with the panel deciding to rescue San Diego's savvy young diva, all seven contestants will return to the stage Wednesday night to continue to fight for the crown. But there's one catch: Next week two finalists will be given the boot. Will Sanchez be one of the two to go, or will she take Jennifer Lopez's advice and take the audience on a ride like they've never seen before? Who knows? Let's see if America gets it right this time.

Aerosmith Nearly Done With Album Due This Summer

Singer Steven Tyler promises to bring 'a little bit of 1975 back.'

As if guitarist Joe Perry's surprise "Happy Birthday" serenade to singer and judge Steven Tyler on "American Idol" last week weren't proof enough that all is good in Aerosmith land, on Wednesday, the veteran rockers confirmed they're releasing their long-awaited studio album this summer.

They didn't reveal the title of the album, their first featuring new material since 2001's Just Push Play, but singer Tyler told Reuters that after a few years of turmoil and tension things are (relatively) back to normal.

"The camaraderie's there, there's some songs that are new rock, and old rock and middle-of-the-road rock, and blues, piano," he said. "Joe Perry singing a couple of songs, I'm playing the drums, Joey sings, just all kinds of stuff." Tyler, 64, added that they have re-teamed with longtime producer Jack Douglas in order to bring "a little bit of 1975 back."

Rolling Stone reported that Tyler said the band is two songs from the finish line and some of the titles completed so far include "Legendary Child," "Beautiful" and "Out Go the Lights."

The release date was not announced, but the band — who arrived at the press conference via motorcycle, a white Lamborghini, taxi and rickshaw — promised to have the disc ready around the time of the kickoff of their recently announced North American "Global Warming" tour, which begins June 16 in Minneapolis. "You're going to get some new songs from the new album and some old songs from the old albums and you're going to get new us and old us, and we're just going to go out and rock your world," Tyler said.

The Boston-bred icons have been trying to get together to record their 15th studio album for several years, but their efforts were interrupted by a variety of ailments, stage accidents involving Tyler (as well as his rehab stint in 2009) and enmity that was stirred up by the singer's decision to sign on as a judge for "Idol."

But despite the grumbling from Perry when Tyler announced his decision to take a seat next to Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson in 2010, the motor-mouthed vocalist said the exposure has helped the group reach a whole new audience.

"The music that we write, fortunately it's been seductive to all genres of people," he said. "There's going to be kids who are going to get introduced to Aerosmith all over again, and there's a bunch of new music that we're taking a risk and putting out. It's kind of futuristic rock, all the way across the board, we're just good for that."

After news broke that Steven Tyler had fallen in his Paraguay hotel room, fans wondered about what may have caused the 63-year-old rock legend to take a tumble that required emergency dental work and stitches to his face.

On Thursday (October 27), Tyler opened up about the spill to Matt Lauer on the "Today" show, clearing up any speculation that he had fallen off the wagon.

"Being in the program, it's something we have to expect," Tyler said, referring to his past substance abuse issues. "People thinking that is natural and normal. We flew last night from Paraguay after that incident and we're in Argentina for two hours. And anyone who knows anyone who uses substances wouldn't be up at this hour having a talk with Matt Lauer and the rest of America. It's nothing that I don't understand. I get that people think that. It makes me a little upset."

Lauer then asked the Aerosmith singer point-blank whether he was sober, and the "American Idol" judge assured him he was clean. "No, it's not the issue," Tyler said, adding that he was suffering from food poisoning when he began to feel ill and passed out in the shower.

Tyler and the band were forced to cancel their gig on Tuesday night, but a bruised Steven did take the stage on Wednesday, according to TMZ.

"Short of having my legs taken off, people are going to expect me onstage, no matter what," the singer, who lost two teeth, said on "Today." "I went out onstage last night and I wore my sunglasses for the first song. I took them off and the crowd roared. It's all about playing to the people. We rocked out. Not only did I break my face, but we broke a house record, so life is beautiful, Matt."

Aerosmith singer's accident causes postponement of band's South American show.

Whenever Steven Tyler falls down, chances are Aerosmith is going to get some time off.

The latest tumble by the 63-year-old rock and roll icon and "American Idol" judge took place on Tuesday in Paraguay, when Tyler reportedly slipped and fell in his hotel bathroom, sending him to a local emergency room. According to a Reuters report, Tyler spent four hours at La Costa medical center in Paraguay's capital and received emergency dental work and stitches to repair cuts to his face and the loss of two teeth.

The incident forced Aerosmith to cancel Tuesday night's show in Asuncion, Paraguay, which was part of their current Latin American tour. The outing kicked off on Saturday in Lima, Peru, and is slated to hit La Plata, Argentina, on Friday and swing through Brazil, Panama, Columbia, Ecuador and Mexico before heading to Japan in late November. "Mr. Tyler had a small accident that prevents him from staging the concert tonight," said Marcelo Antunez, a spokesperson for the show's promoter. "He is fine, he's in his hotel but he's not able to do the concert."

The concert has been rescheduled for Wednesday (October 26) night. Another spokesperson for the promoter, Nicolas Garzia, tweeted that Tyler had been dehydrated and was suffering gastrointestinal problems before the tumble.

The last time Tyler fell was in August 2009, when he slipped off a stage in South Dakota and was airlifted to a hospital, which forced the postponement of the group's North American tour. The inter-group tension that followed almost resulted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers breaking up as the band briefly weighed searching for a new singer.

Steven Tyler To Release Tell-All Autobiography In May

'Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?' is Aerosmith frontman/'Idol' judge's second memoir.

Some rock-and-roll lives are so epic that they require more than one official telling. That's clearly the case with colorful Aerosmith frontman and "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler, who is preparing to release his second memoir, "Does the Noise in My Head Bother You," on May 3.

According to the book's publisher, HarperCollins, the long-in-the-works book promises to share "the unbridled truth, the in-your-face, up-close and prodigious tale of Steven Tyler straight from the horse's lips ... All the unexpurgated, brain-jangling tales of debauchery, sex & drugs, transcendence & chemical dependence you will ever want to hear."

Tyler (born Steven Victor Tallarico), 63, wrote about his wild life in 1997's Aerosmith autobiography "Walk This Way," but with his higher profile on "Idol," now seems like the time to let his younger fans get a window into his 40-plus years of rock-and-roll high life.

"I've been mythicized, Mick-icized, eulogized and fooligized, I've been Cole-Portered and farmer's-daughtered, I've been Led Zepped and 12-stepped," Tyler explains in promotional materials in his classic hoodoo jive talk about his colorful past. "I'm a rhyming fool and so cool that me, Fritz the Cat, and Mohair Sam are the baddest cats that am. I have so many outrageous stories, too many, and I'm gonna tell 'em all."

He's added plenty of new drama since the last book, including a very public feud with his longtime bandmates, an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a few stage falls, a relapse, a split with his second wife and the death of his first wife, a battle with hepatitis C and throat surgery, and a triumphant return to the spotlight on "Idol."

It was unknown at press time, though, if the book will contain much material on his "Idol" gig.

"Tyler tells what it's like to be a living legend and the frontman of one of the world's most revered and infamous bands — the debauchery, the money, the notoriety, the fights, the motels and hotels, the elevators, limos, buses and jets, the rehab," reads the book description. "He reveals the spiritual side that 'gets lost behind the stereotype of the Sex Guy, the Drug Guy, the Demon of Screamin', the Terror of the Tropicana.' And he talks about his epic romantic life and his relationship with his four children."

Steven Tyler, Rihanna, Robert Pattinson Pop Up At ACM Awards

You could be excused if you tuned into the 46th Academy of Country Music Awards show on Sunday night and thought that maybe you'd overslept and missed the Grammys. In addition to the usual complement of cowboy hats and bedazzled boots, there was a healthy dose of rock and pop glitter at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

In addition to "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler lending his formidable pipes to a duet with Carrie Underwood on her hit "Undo It," the pair chewed up the stage for Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," with Underwood looking comfortable screeching the song's chorus into a microphone with a glittery whip on the end.

There were also some awards handed out, including four to Miranda Lambert, who won Best Female Vocalist, as well as Single, Song and Video of the Year honors for her tune "The House That Built Me." But her roll ended at the fan-voted Entertainer of the Year trophy, which went to Taylor Swift, 21, the youngest-ever winner of that honor.

"This is the first time I've ever won this, and I'm just losing my mind," a teary Swift said in her signature breathless manner. "The fact that this is from the fans makes it so beautiful. ... You are the best thing that has ever happened to me. Ever ... We just got back from touring in Europe and Asia, so thank you for this wonderful welcome-home gift."

Earlier in the night, Swift premiered her new single, a get back tune at critics who've slagged her live singing in the past, which she performed while plucking a banjo.

It was a big night for Grammy winners Lady Antebellum as well, with the country trio winning Top Vocal Group and Album of the Year for Need You Now, while bluegrass newcomers the Band Perry snagged Best New Artist. It was five in a row for Brad Paisley, who once again went home with the Best Male Vocalist hardware, and the Gwyneth Paltrow-starring "Country Strong" took the Tex Ritter Award for films that emphasize country music.

The performance-heavy three-hour show also featured the sight of Rihanna being joined by Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles for a dramatic duet on Ri's new single, "California King Bed," and folk pop icon James Taylor joined Zac Brown for a medley of "Colder Weather" and "Sweet Baby James."

Among the presenters were "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest, as well as Robert Pattinson, who appeared on the show with his "Water for Elephants" co-star Reese Witherspoon.

'Idol' judge tells MTV News 'it's heartbreaking' to let go of hopefuls with loads of 'character' but OK voices.

Those who've been following the revamped 10th season of ratings juggernaut "American Idol" know that the addition of new judges Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler have spiced things up a bit. Particularly in the case of Tyler, who has peppered each episode with his colorful musings, mugging for the cameras, and interactions with contestants and fellow judges.

When MTV News spoke to the Aerosmith frontman during NBA All-Star weekend, we asked how he's doing, now that they've narrowed the thousands of "Idol" hopefuls down to a competitive 50.

"It was a long road whittling it down from 700 [contestants] to 400, then Hollywood Week and then, aw man ... letting them go," Tyler said, adding that it's particularly difficult to let go of the ones who are OK singers, but potentially great performers.

"You know what? Not everybody that's great sings good. They've got character, that certain something you can't put your finger on," he explained. "And man, when they sing, look out. A lot of these kids have got it, but we have to let them go and it's heartbreaking."

Tyler went on to say that his road to success in the music industry was paved with a few more hard knocks than the "Idol" contestants have to endure.

"I didn't watch 'Idol' because I grew up from, you had to play clubs. If you don't play in front of the people and get your hard knocks from that and get booed, [you don't learn] how to stand up when you fall back down," he said before likening himself and judges Lopez and Randy Jackson as the "American Idol" school of hard knocks.

"[When] they're in front of us," he said of the contestants. "We're the club."

'American Idol' Boosts Aerosmith Sales

Sales up more than 250 percent since Steven Tyler joined judges' panel.

Steven Tyler isn't just the breakout star of "American Idol" season 10, he may also be one of the shrewdest musical minds in all of Hollywood. While some longtime Aerosmith fans — as well as Kid Rock and Tyler's own bandmates — lamented the 62-year-old rock icon's decision to sign on as a judge for America's favorite reality singing show, Tyler may have the last laugh as sales of the band's music have skyrocketed over the past few weeks.

Tyler has made it clear in recent interviews that Aerosmith is his priority and that his "Idol" gig will not interfere with band business. In the meantime, while he's locked up with show appearances through May, the singer has slyly found a way to keep the band's music front and center by featuring it on multiple "Idol" episodes.

In fact, according to Nielsen SoundScan, since the launch of the new season of "Idol" on January 19, the sales of Aerosmith's greatest-hits collections have gone up by more than 250 percent. Among the biggest gainers: 1994's Big Ones (up 260 percent after the debut week) and 2006's Devil's Got a New Disguise: The Very Best of Aerosmith (up 146 percent after week two). According to The Hollywood Reporter, two other greatest-hits compilations have spiked by 137 percent and 147 percent.

Before the show premiered with Tyler taking his seat alongside fellow new judge Jennifer Lopez and returning veteran Randy Jackson, sales of the Aerosmith catalog were waning, moving less than 1,000 copies a week. So while the bump up to sales of more than 2,000 copies per album is impressive, it's still modest compared to such perennial catalog giants as Bob Marley & the Wailers' Legend, which was also up nearly 100 percent last week on sales of more than 7,000.

In addition to singing a (seemingly) impromptu duet with 15-year-old Lauren Alaina on "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (which has also memorably been sung on the show in the past by winner David Cook and finalist Allison Iraheta), Tyler slipped in a bit of a cappella "Sweet Emotion" at the top of the Milwaukee audition episode. Later in the night, Aerosmith superfan Ali Jados tipped her hat to Aerosmith's version of the Beatles' "Come Together" and then duetted with Tyler on his band's iconic "Dream On."

It isn't just album sales, either. Aerosmith is seeing some serious digital love as well. For the week ending January 30, they sold 34,000 downloads of "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" (an increase of 363 percent) and 26,000 downloads of 1973's "Dream On" (up 318 percent over the previous week). "Sweet Emotion" also rocked the digital chart thanks to Tyler's scatting duet with Jackson during the Milwaukee episode, shooting up 125 percent on sales of 7,000 on the Rock Digital Songs chart for the week ending February 3, according to Billboard.

Tyler recently told Sirius XM talker Howard Stern that Aerosmith have been rehearsing (without guitarist Joe Perry, apparently) in Los Angeles; plans call for them to work on a new album soon and tour this summer. Though he's often at odds with Tyler, Perry has weighed in on his Twitter account over the past week, assuring fans on February 4, "I am in Aerosmith. I am not going anywhere. The band isn't writing any more. It was only for eight days." He also denied rumors that he hasn't been in touch with his bandmates, saying, "There's nothing to make up. We are brothers, we have been texting back n forth since the tour ended. It's a bunch of BS."

He said he missed the writing session due to prior commitments and told fans that the group will crank back up in the spring to finish the new CD and tour from October to December.

'American Idol' Finds Tragic Stories, Aerosmith Groupies In Milwaukee

Jerome Bell, Scott Dangerfield, Alyson Jados and Scotty McCreery stand out in week two.

The second week of "American Idol" auditions brought our judges to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the first visit to the beer-and-cheese-loving Midwestern town busted out of the gate with a surefire star in the making, as well as the by-now-familiar slow-motion glamour montage complete with Steven Tyler yelps and profane bleeps. The trip also served up one of the most touching "Idol" audition moments of all time and a healthy roster of talented young teens.

Though the focus was to be on the auditioners this year, the episode opened with Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler doing an endearing a cappella duet of Aerosmith's "Sweet Emotion" accompanied by an Altoids tin and some cheeky lyrics about bad singing. As if we could forget that Tyler is a world-famous rock star, right?

But that was soon replaced by the froggy voice of Garner, North Carolina, native Scotty McCreery, 16, who wowed the judges off the bat with his perfect country rumble through Josh Turner's "Your Man" and Travis Tritt's "Put Some Drive in Your Country." Both songs sounded like the work of a career cowboy crooner rather than a high school baseball prospect. "Well hellfire, save matches, f--- a duck and see what hatches!" Tyler enthused to the howls of the whole "Idol" crew. "That's beautiful."

Host Ryan Seacrest humored budding radio host Joe Repka, 19, an awkward communications major who lost the panel off the bat with his lame "radio voice," then set them howling like dogs with a warbly operatic slog through Billy Joel's "The Longest Time."

Emma Henry, 15, said she's watched the show since she was 5, and her raspy, emotional "True Colors" by Cyndi Lauper had rough spots but won Tyler over with its unique character. "I want this so bad; this is what my life is about," the emo teen wept after judge Jennifer Lopez said no and Jackson reluctantly put her through. "Don't disappoint us," he cautioned.

One of the bright spots in an otherwise grim day of auditions in Milwaukee was colorful belter Naima Adedapo, who killed it with a gospel-tinged slow-and-easy version of Donny Hathaway's "For All We Know," which was powerful, self-assured and oh-so-buttery. "I like you a lot," said Lopez, who called Adedapo the whole package. They also gave a thumbs-up to wedding/ bar mitzvah singer Jerome Bell, 27, when the New York native slayed Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" thanks to high energy and a sugar-sweet falsetto. "So good, so good," Tyler gushed.

One thing has already become clear this season: Singing Lady Gaga is a terrible idea in an "Idol" audition. Every time. And don't show up with giant toothbrushes or wearing your Civil War re-enactment costumes, because that mess doesn't wash.

Admitting that they lowered the age limit in part because of Bieber Fever, Seacrest said there have been a lot of stellar 15-year-olds so far this year, with startlingly confident California native Thia Megia proving them right after a soulful stroll through Adele's "Chasing Pavements." She set off an avalanche of 15-year-old gold-ticket winners, providing a glimpse of the youthquake that is sure to shake the Hollywood rounds.

It's unclear why 22-year-old Harvard grad and White House intern Molly DeWolf Swenson even needs "Idol," but the statuesque blonde proved she has some other skills with a smoky "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" that appeared to catch Tyler's eye. "Who knew what was goin' on at the White House?" Randy said, with Tyler adding, "That's great. You got attitude, you know where to put it, geez, that was beautiful!"

Day two brought more R&B belters, a (terrible) Obama impersonator, an operatic destruction of Bieber's "Baby" and a Minnie Riperton slayer with some serious bad attitude. Then there was mild-mannered awkward loner accountant/ funeral singer (is that even a thing?) Steve Beghun, who did a Jason Mraz-meets-Josh Groban warble that Tyler called "disturbingly great" and which was just good enough to get him to Hollywood.

Milwaukee student teacher Scott Dangerfield, 22, looked like an indie-rock slacker but came on like a blue-eyed soulster when he sang Amos Lee's "Dreamin'." It felt a bit mannered but was so compelling to Lopez that she called it her favorite audition so far, counseling him to keep the grown-out Bieber hair and nerdy glasses.

Hire a rock star and you'll get a few groupies, such as self-avowed Chicago rocker girl and bartender Alyson Jados, 26, who immediately caught her idol's fancy. "Wow," Tyler said wide-eyed while looking over the raven-haired beauty with the voluptuous mouth. "You look like you could be one of my ... nope, I can't say it. ... One of my friends."

She knew just what song to pick, too, growling out a cover of the Beatles' "Come Together," which Aerosmith famously covered in the disastrous 1978 "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" movie, segueing into a duet with Tyler on Aerosmith's "Dream On."

Tyler appreciated that she sang one of his songs but said he was scared by how pitchy her performance was, though Lopez liked her stage presence and performance quality. Randy gave it a no while Lopez said yes, so it was up to Tyler, who faked left and then sent Jados to the next round.

The night ended with one of the all-time "Idol" audition tearjerker stories, courtesy of Chicago's Chris Medina, 26, who told the tragic tale of his fiancée's life-changing car accident. After getting engaged following eight years together, she suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2009 and Medina explained how he stood by her side and is now her caretaker.

His finger-snapping amble through "Break Even" by the Script had touches of heart and soul, and after he wheeled girlfriend Julie in to meet the judges, they broke the good news that he was going to advance. "Nice kid, he sang great," Randy said.

Thursday night's show will take the panel to Nashville for another night of auditions.

In addition to the excitement and anticipation that is involved in watching the audition rounds of "American Idol," the unexpected remarks that come out of new judge Steven Tyler's mouth are quickly becoming just as (if not more) entertaining to listen to as the contestants' vocal stylings.

We weren't sure Tyler could top last week's performance, but mere minutes into Wednesday's (January 26) episode (after opening the show singing an a cappella "Idol" version of "Sweet Emotion" with Randy Jackson), we knew we were in for another night of Tyler treats. Here are our favorites from the Milwaukee auditions:
