Adele Apologizes For Snubbing Justin Timberlake At Grammys

Most young ladies would kill for the opportunity to meet Justin Timberlake. Little do they know that all they really have to do is win a Grammy, and he'll come to them. If only Best New Artist winner Adele had known that the night of the Grammy Awards last month, then maybe she wouldn't have snubbed him when he came to congratulate her.

"In the hallway, after I'd won two Grammys, he grabbed me and he's like, 'Congratulations,' " she told People. "I was so totally overwhelmed about the Grammys that I didn't even realize it was Justin. Then, 10 yards down the huge hallway in the Staples Center, I just heard this huge scream and realized I was screaming my head off."

Nearly a month after the incident, Adele hopes that Justin somehow finds her apology. "Justin, I love you, and I'm really sorry ... for making it seem like I didn't want to meet you," Adele added. "I really did — and I don't think we can ever be friends because you're just too much. You're too good!"

Adele also found herself star-struck when she was in the presence of her idol, Etta James, last September at the Fashion Rocks concert at New York's Radio City Music Hall. "She's tiny," Adele said. "I love her. She's so glamorous. She looked amazing."

Adele wanted to say hi to James, but she was scared of getting snubbed. "I couldn't say hello," she told People. "In case she said, 'Get out of my face!' I've heard she's a bit of a madam. But she can be, because she's the best singer alive."

Lucky for Adele, she'll have another chance to talk to her idol in June. "I'm [playing] the Hollywood Bowl. I was doing it on my own, but now we're co-headlining together," she said. "She's my favorite singer. It's amazing. I'm so excited."

In the interview, Adele's also insisted that despite her retro style, she's quite different from fellow British songstress Amy Winehouse. "Amy is a true phenomenon," she said. "When Amy was big in America, me and Duffy were blowing up in England, and I think it made the journey over a bit smoother [for us].

"I think Amy is hardcore," she added. "I think Duffy is really soft — she's got the pinup look going on. She's a proper lady. I think I'm really contemporary. And I'm just really mouthy!"

After taking a couple of weeks off, Taylor Swift will once again top next week's Billboard albums chart. But the big news is the post-Grammy sales bump, which sent her album and plenty of others surging back up into the upper reaches of the chart.

Possibly thanks to her duet with Miley Cyrus on the Grammy telecast, Swift's Fearless sold more than 91,700 copies to grab #1, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Sitting at #2, with sales of more than 76,500 copies — a 715 percent increase from last week — is Robert Plant & Alison Krauss' Raising Sand, which took home five awards on Grammy night, including Album of the Year. On last week's chart, Sand sat at #69. Two weeks ago, it was out of the Top 200.

Landing at #3, with sales of close to 75,400 copies, is neo-soul chanteuse India.Arie, who scored the week's biggest debut with her Testimony: Volume 2, Love & Politics. Last week's chart champs, the Fray, sit at #4, selling more than 75,100 copies of their self-titled album. Chippy Brit Lily Allen debuts at #5, selling about 69,900 copies of her sophomore album, It's Not Me, It's You.

Bruce Springsteen's Working on a Dream sits at #6, with sales of more than 64,500 copies, and Bobby Valentino's Rebirth bows at #7, with 64,100 sold.

Coldplay — who took home three awards on Grammy night, including Song of the Year — jumped all the way from #31 to #8, selling more than 62,100 copies (a 271 percent increase from the previous week's numbers) of Viva la Vida Or Death and All His Friends. The 2009 Grammy Nominees compilation is next at #9, with sales of 61,000 copies, and Best New Artist winner Adele leapt from #27 to #10, selling more than 56,000 copies of her debut, 19.

Outside the top 10, there were plenty of other artists who benefitted from some post-Grammy love. Jamie Foxx — who performed a tribute to the Four Tops alongside Ne-Yo during the telecast — posted a 10 percent increase in sales, landing at #14. T.I., whose "Swagga Like Us" won Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, saw a boost from his pair of Grammy performances, as sales of Paper Trail increased by 45 percent, locking him in at #18. Kid Rock didn't win any awards, but thanks to his performance, sales of his Rock N Roll Jesus album jumped up 64 percent, giving him the #21 spot.

Lil Wayne won a trio of trophies on Grammy night and rocked the stage twice, which might explain why he saw sales of Tha Carter III jump 34 percent, placing it at #29. Jennifer Hudson's strong and soulful performance boosted sales of her self-titled debut by 112 percent; moving it all the way from #47 to #30. The Kings of Leon, Duffy, Lady Antebellum, Radiohead, M.I.A. and John Mayer also saw big jumps in sales thanks in part to their Grammy participation.

It's been four years since Denver rockers the Fray released their debut album, but clearly their fans have not forgotten the "How to Save a Life" group. The band's self-titled second album will debut at the top of the Billboard albums chart next week with sales of 179,300, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan.

That top debut will push Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band's Working on a Dream — which held the spot for just one week — down to #2 with sales of 101,600, a 55 percent slide. Country singer Dierks Bentley will debut at #3 with Feel That Fire, which sold 71,200 copies.

The rest of the top 10 is mostly full of the usual suspects, once again. Taylor Swift will continue her strong chart run with Fearless, sliding down to #4 with another 63,900 moved, enough to push her over the 2.5 million mark. She's followed by Beyoncé's I Am ... Sasha Fierce (#5, 51,400), Nickelback's Dark Horse (#6, 47,300), new entry Kidz Bop 15 (#7, 38,400), Jamie Foxx's Intuition (#8, 36,600), Kanye West's 808s & Heartbreak (#9, 33,900) and Keyshia Cole's Different Me (#10, 33,600).

Further down the chart, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus debut at #14 with 26,000 copies sold of Lonely Road. Florida melodic metalcore rockers A Day to Remember pop in at #21 with sales of 21,700 of their third studio album, Homesick. Best New Artist Grammy winner Adele's debut, 19, jumps 29 spots to #27 on sales of nearly 17,900, and she'll likely see an even bigger jump next week. Adele's iTunes live EP, iTunes Live From Soho, will debut at #105 with sales of 6,300.

Another Best New Artist nominee, fellow British crooner Duffy, saw a double-digit percentage leap for Rockferry, which was boosted to #53 with sales of 11,500. A number of other Grammy-winnings artists were helped by the awards show, including Coldplay (#31, 16,700), Leona Lewis (#42, 12,700) and Jennifer Hudson (#47, 12,100). Expect Album of the Year winner Raising Sand from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss to have another huge bump next week. Sand flies back onto the charts at #68 thanks to about 9,400 new converts, a 286 percent increase from the previous week.

Elsewhere on the chart, "American Idol" season-six third-place finalist Melinda Doolittle's full length debut, It's Your Love, will land at #58 in its first week with close to 10,900 units moved. Franz Ferdinand's Tonight: Franz Ferdinand nose-dives 50 spots after last week's top 10 debut, down to #59 with 10,700 in sales. Cannibal Corpse bring their Evisceration Plague in at #91 with 7,500, and just a few customers behind is the latest from Ben Kweller, the country-tinged Changing Horses at #92. Indie darlings Heartless Bastards debut at #150 with sales of 4,200 for Mountains.

The top 10 might get shaken up a bit next week by new albums from Lily Allen, "Saturday Night Live" viral faves Lonely Island and the latest from Bobby Valentino.

Best New Artist Grammy winner Adele may be best known as the 20-year-old who sings "Chasing Pavements," but she's already racked up critical praise for her album, 19.

In 2007, Adele was awarded with the first Brit Awards Critics' Choice Award. In 2008, she was nominated for a Mercury Prize for 19. The singer has said that "Chasing Pavements" was written after a night on the town with her ex-boyfriend, who she realized wasn't worth pursuing anymore.

The singer's look is decidedly out of step with that of today's female artists, and interestingly, she found inspiration from Etta James, who recently stirred up controversy with her remarks about Beyoncé's version of her signature song, "At Last," which Beyoncé performed at President Obama's Neighborhood Ball last month.

"I saw Etta James' bleached-blond hair and big catty eyes, and I saw Ella Fitzgerald's primped '40s hair, and I just fell in love with them!" she told the Chicago Sun-Times. So I bought these albums — they were like two for 5 pounds in a bargain bin — and they were amazing. I had heard of Ella Fitzgerald, but I'd never even heard of Etta James. But I bought these records and never even gave them to my cousin, because when I heard Etta James, it was like my life was over. She's amazing!"

Although pop heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers may have lost to the singer, there is definitely a mutual admiration between Adele and the boys. When she hit the stage to accept her Best New Artist Grammy, she told the crowd how much she loved the Jonas Brothers. And, in the February 5 issue of Rolling Stone, Adele said, "The Jonas Brothers' choruses are really catchy. They make shameful pop — and I f---ing love them."

And at the Grammy nomination concert in December, the Jonas Brothers told MTV News, "We're big fans of her record." It seems that the Academy echoed that sentiment. Adele, who performed at the Grammys with country act Sugarland, was up for four awards and won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in addition to Best New Artist.

When MTV News recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly critic Leah Greenblatt about Adele's chances of winning Best New Artist, she thought that Adele and fellow British soul singer Duffy would cancel each other out and the statue would go to the JoBros, even though the Jonases are not really "new" artists.

But in a contest between Duffy and Adele, she chose Adele because her nominations landed her in a number of the female-only categories, where her chances are strong. Well, it looks like it all paid off for the young singer in the end.

Will Lil Wayne grab all the gramophones? Is Katy Perry going to tell her girl rivals to kiss off? Can Coldplay march off with a win? MTV News is all over the 51st Annual Grammy Awards, so stay tuned for interviews, analysis and more before, during and after the big night.

BEVERLY HILLS, California — Taylor Swift was a bundle of nerves at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy Gala on Saturday night. And the only thing that seemed to calm down the 19-year-old was the fact when she hits the Grammy stage on Sunday night, she'll have her friend, Miley Cyrus, by her side.

"We're friends, so anytime I'm performing with her, my nerves go away, 'cause she's always trying to make me laugh or is doing something ridiculous," Swift told MTV News. "It's so fun to get up there with one of your friends and get to perform on the Grammys."

Though the pair has no problems sharing the stage, when hanging out together, they don't like to talk business or swap stories about their tabloid troubles.

"We try and keep it friends and not discuss business and publicity," Swift said. "It's fun being able to be friends with someone who does the same thing that you do and not have that come into play."

Swift and Cyrus, whose new single "The Climb" debuted on the Internet this weekend, will perform Swift's song "Fifteen," off her smash album Fearless. Swift said she still can't believe that she's been offered the chance to play on music's biggest night.

"I can't believe I get to do this," she said. "You walk around and you see all the people here, and to be invited to the Grammys to perform is unreal. I can't believe it."

There are two people in particular that Swift has on her list of artists she hopes to meet at the big show. "I would love to meet Adele, and I would love to meet M.I.A.," she said. "I've also heard that Adele is really nice, so I would love to walk up to her and say hi."
