'X2' star lands role in Sci-Fi Channel miniseries 'Earthsea.'

Shawn Ashmore, who won Breakthrough Male at the MTV Movie Awards for his role as Bobby Drake (a.k.a. Iceman) in "X2: X-Men United," will star in "Earthsea," an epic miniseries for the Sci-Fi Channel co-starring Isabella Rossellini and


Danny Glover. "It's based on these books by an author named Ursula K. Le Guin, sort of in the vein of 'Lord of the Rings,' " Ashmore said. "It's this world that's basically scattered into thousands of islands, and it's basically the power struggle between humans and sorcerers and these priestesses who protect the world." Ashmore has also signed on for a third "X-Men," but he described the project as "up in the air." If it does go into production, he's hoping for an Iceman vs. Pyro fight. "There's a bitter rivalry there, so I think we need a big battle royal," he said. "Some ice walls, some slides, some flames, just an awesome fight sequence." ...

Vince Vaughn will star in and executive-produce a movie based on the Japanese cartoon series "Speed Racer" produced by Joel Silver ("The Matrix"). The "Dodgeball" star will play Racer X, Speed's mysterious older brother. No other roles are cast in movie, which was first developed a few years ago with Johnny Depp starring, but that version stalled over budget issues. ... Tim Robbins is in final negotiations to star in the children's fantasy "Zathura, " which "Elf" director Jon Favreau will helm from Chris Van Allsburg's script. Like Van Allsburg's "Jumanji," the story focuses on kids sent to another world through a board game, only this time it's outer space rather than the jungle. ...

"Van Wilder" star Ryan Reynolds will star in a remake of "The Amityville Horror," about a family that moves into a haunted house. Scott Kosar, who wrote the "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake, penned the script. ... Chris Carmack of "The O.C." is eyeing the role of Amanda Bynes' object of affection in "Lovewrecked," a romantic comedy about a girl who tricks a famous rock star into believing they are stranded on a remote island. Lance Bass is producing the movie. ...

Quentin Tarantino told reporters in Spain this week he plans to make a third part of the "Kill Bill" series, but in 15 years. Volume three will center on the daughter of Vivica A. Fox's character, who was killed by Uma Thurman's character in the first volume. ... Burt Reynolds has joined Ray Romano and Kevin James in "Grilled," a comedy about two eager meat salesmen. Juliette Lewis is also negotiations to join the movie, which will shoot next month in Los Angeles. ...

Ben Affleck won $356,400 and a seat in next year's World Poker Tour Championship earlier this week by outplaying 90 others at the Commerce Casino's California State Poker Championship. At the final table, Affleck beat poker pro Stan Goldstein and Chuck Pacheco, president and co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment. Tobey Maguire went out on the first day of the three-day tournament. ... Liv Tyler and Spacehog singer Royston Langdon are expecting a child in the winter. Tyler recently wrapped "Lonesome Jim," co-starring Casey Affleck and directed by Steve Buscemi. ...

Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" is off to an impressive start. At Manhattan's Loew's Village 7 and Lincoln Plaza theaters, the two venues where it opened Wednesday, the documentary broke single-day gross records set by "Men in Black" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," respectively. ... Theater employees who catch bootleggers videotaping movies can now collect up to $500 as a reward. The Motion Picture Association of America estimates bootlegs costs the industry billions of dollars each year. ...
