Justin Timberlake may not have landed the role of the Green Lantern in the forthcoming comic book flick, but come August 28, fans of the singer and actor can check out his latest movie, "The Open Road," out in limited release.

A trailer for the indie film premiered on MSN.com on Tuesday. Timberlake plays Carlton, the estranged son of baseball player Kyle Garrett (Jeff Bridges). Father and son, along with Carlton's lady friend, Lucy (Kate Mara), embark on a road trip. The film also stars Mary Steenburgen as Timberlake's sick mother, who wants to see Bridges' character again.

Timberlake's film career has received mixed reviews thus far. His past acting roles include "Edison," "Alpha Dog," "Black Snake Moan" and "The Love Guru." Next up, he'll be reprising his role as Artie in the animated "Shrek Forever After," alongside ex-girlfriend Cameron Diaz.

In addition to his latest Best Choreography VMA nomination for Ciara's "Love Sex Magic" video, Timberlake is also up for three Emmy Awards in September for his appearance at the ESPY Awards and his much-loved work on "Saturday Night Live." Recently, "SNL" head writer Seth Myers joked to New York magazine that Timberlake is more than welcome to join the cast of his show.

"If Justin Timberlake was so stupid and hated money so much that he would work for us permanently, we would love to have him," Myers said. "But he would really have to hate money."
