As her fans know all too well, Jodie Foster takes her time and picks her projects carefully. Now the two-time Oscar winner is set to direct and possibly star in a sweet-sounding movie that will hopefully make the wait worthwhile.

The actress has signed on to direct "Sugar Kings," a drama described as "Silence of the Lambs" meets "Erin Brockovich." It follows the story of a young female attorney who graduates from law school and immediately turns her idealistic gaze in the direction of abusive labor practices. The young lawyer seeks the assistance of a veteran public-interest attorney, who then guides her through the treacherous waters of a confrontation with a powerful sugar baron. As fields of migrant workers are exploited in the name of profit, the two attorneys attempt to take down a controlling power that threatens the jobs, and the well-being, of all involved.

The film is based on a Vanity Fair article titled "In the Kingdom of Big Sugar" by Marie Brenner. Screenwriters Ned Zeman and Daniel Barnz, who recently collaborated on the upcoming Richard Gere movie "Emperor Zehnder," adapted the screenplay.

The "Panic Room" star, who hasn't directed a film since 1995's "Home for the Holidays," will once again step behind the camera after years of futile attempts at making the seemingly cursed drama "Flora Plum" her next directorial effort. While "Sugar Kings" will continue to be developed as a possible starring vehicle for Foster, the actress is awaiting further rewriting of the script before she commits to a character.

The project will be produced by Universal Pictures and Jane Rosenthal ("Meet the Fockers"). Foster will next be seen searching frantically for her missing daughter in the September 23 release "Flight Plan" and is currently filming the Spike Lee heist drama "Inside Man" alongside Denzel Washington and Clive Owen.
