Actor Joaquin Phoenix — perhaps best known for his roles in the films "The Village," "Signs," "Ladder 49" and "Gladiator" — voluntarily checked himself into an undisclosed rehabilitation center for alcoholism treatment two weeks ago, according to a Reuters report.

A spokesperson for the thespian told the wire service on Tuesday that Phoenix — who'll play the late Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line," the upcoming biopic of the country-music legend's life (see "Reese Witherspoon's Most Horrifying Experience Ever? Singing") set for release later this year — was "uncomfortable with the way that he was living his life and found the courage to deal with the disease."

Phoenix's brother, actor River Phoenix, died on October 31, 1993, of a drug overdose outside Johnny Depp's legendary Los Angeles club, the Viper Room. He was 23.
