Has-been actor Dickie Roberts is reliving his former glory. The movie about the fictitious former child star racked up the most receipts at the box office over the weekend.
"Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star" took in $7 million, according to the studio estimates. (Click for photos from "Dickie Roberts.") The low revenue is a sure sign that the summer-movie season is over. Total takes for all movies traditionally plummet the weekend after Labor Day, and this year's Friday-to-Sunday stretch will follow suit. The gross of the top 10 movies is estimated to fall under $60 million, a total that is 14 percent less than the same period last year.
Together, first-weekend tickets for recent blockbusters "Freddy Vs. Jason" and "S.W.A.T." surpassed the $60 million mark by more than $10 million. Weeks after their release, however, "Freddie Vs. Jason" slips from #7 to #9, taking in $3.2 million in the process, while "S.W.A.T." goes from #3 to #5, with a $4.6 million weekend pull.
The David Spade comedy pushed last week's top film, "Jeepers Creepers 2," to the #2 slot, with earnings of $6.7 million. Its 10-day total stands at $27.4 million.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," with a modest $5.5 million monetary influx, takes the #3 spot, and brings with it $282.1 million to the Disney company since it opened in July. The total makes it the second-highest-grossing film of the year, beating out "The Matrix Reloaded" and trailing "Finding Nemo," which has accumulated $333.9 million.
Besides "Dickie Roberts," the only new movie to crack the top 10 was the higher-power horror flick "The Order." With Heath Ledger in the hot seat as a priest looking for a human "sin sponge," the thriller took in $4.3 million for a #6 placement.
The remainder of the top 10 finds "Freaky Friday" amassing $5.1 million for a #4 seat ($98 million total); "Open Range" at #7 with $4 million; critics' darling "Seabiscuit" at #8 with $3.7 million; and "Uptown Girls" bringing up the rear with $2.4 million.
Belated wedding congratulations are due to Jim and Michelle. This weekend, their "American Wedding" became the 20th film this year to gross over $100 million at the box office.
