Movie Details

The small town where heroine Tesse Fayne (Pauline Starke) resides is invaded by a third-rate theatrical stock company. The star-struck heroine is immediately smitten by the troupe's leading man, who invites her to pay him a visit in New York. She does so, only to find out that the matinee idol already has a wife -- and a nasty one to boot. Disillusioned, Tesse rushes out into the streets, where she bumps into wealthy clubman Carey Larned (Jack Livingston). Once again, Tesse falls in love, and once again she has selected a man who is already promised to another woman. This time, however, the "other woman" is a kind and gracious lady, who has the good sense to die at film's end so that Tesse and Carey can be married. The fabled "sentimentality" of director Frank Borzage was well in evidence in The Innocent's Progress. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi
