Bucolic vaudeville entertainer Fred Stone both produced and starred in this comedy Western directed by Frank Borzage. Stone, whose show business career had begun when he joined the circus at the age of nine, played a potato-peeler salesman who inadvertently captures a gang of rustlers terrorizing female rancher Vola Vale. The Scarecrow in the original Broadway production of The Wizard of Oz, Stone was an infrequent visitor to the screen and is today perhaps only remembered for playing Katharine Hepburn's harried father in Alice Adams (1935). The relative success of Duke of Chimney Butte led to another Western comedy, Billy Jim (1922), also directed by Borzage. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
