Movie Details

As produced by Ironbound Films, narrated by The Office star Rainn Wilson, and originally aired on PBS, this documentary follows a group of three affluent business students who firmly believe that poverty can be traced to the presence of free handouts, services and social programs (such as welfare) within society. With this in mind, each student decides to apprentice for a unique organization aligned with their goals: Mumbai resident Suraj opts to work with Ecotact, a company that addresses the poverty of Kenyans by building pay toilets in slums; San Diegoan Heidi travels to India to work with D.light Design - a company that sells solar-powered LED lights to impoverished Indians; and Tuscaloosan Joel works for Micro Drip, a company that sells drip irrigation units to Pakistani farmers. Each substory asks probing and ironic questions about whether ad extremis capitalism can actually be effective at eradicating global poverty. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi
