Movie Details

An amateur marriage counselor tries to overhaul his own relationship in this comedy-drama from Sweden. Erland (Rolf Lassgard) and his wife May (Stina Ekblad) are a middle-aged couple who have been married for years and try to share what they've learned as part of a volunteer "good marriage" program at their church. Erland is close friends with Sven-Erik (Claes Ljungmark), who works at the same paper plant, and Erland persuades Sven-Erik that he could learn a lot by attending one of his marriage workshops. While Sven-Erik's spouse Karin (Pernilla August) is skeptical, he convinces her to give it a try, and after attending a meeting she finds she likes Erland, but she doesn't realize how much until she attends a birthday party for him a few weeks later. Erland and Karin discover they're strongly attracted to one another and begin having an affair, despite her budding friendship with May and his firmly help principles about the sanctity of marriage. Eventually, Erland decides the clandestine relationship has to end, and he proposes a novel solution -- inviting Sven-Erik and Karin to move in with him and May. Det ende rationale (aka A Rational Solution) was the first feature film from director Jorgen Bergmark. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
