Poet Maya Angelou authored the successful book I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings in 1979, and received a 1993 Grammy for Best Spoken Word Recording for her work entitled On the Pulse of the Morning. During this program, Angelou, NAACP President Kweisi Mfume, and other distinguished African-Americans, tell viewers about how many of their people migrated north during the early part of the 20th century in hopes of realizing their dreams there. Sadly, far too many of these people only lived to see their families torn apart by the same wicked prejudice they had hoped to leave behind in the South. Others who contribute to this program include James Cameron, author of A Time of Terror, and Marcus Garvey's son, Dr. Julius Garvey. ~ Elizabeth Smith, Rovi
