Movie Details

This documentary is one of a series looking at religious faith and the architecture it inspired. In this segment, the viewer travels to the 21 missions which follow the coast of California. The missions were founded by Friar Junipero Serra and other priests, who set out from Spain in the late 1700's to spread the Catholic faith to Nueva California. Overcoming great obstacles and dangers, the priests founded missions which flourished for about 60 years, and then were abandoned. However, the architectural beauty of the missions is a lasting legacy of those who risked their lives to come to the New World in the name of faith. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, Rovi
