Movie Details

Sweet Underground focuses on a group of self-styled bohemians in Los Angeles who, either through choice or happenstance, live along life's margins. Jack (Matthew Flint) was once a "respectable" citizen with a job, wife and children, but he's abandoned all that to pursue his dream of becoming a writer, and now spends his days with a crowd of aging drug addicts, whose habits he helps support. Jack is in an on-again, off-again relationship with a woman who pays her rent by turning tricks, while his best friend is trying to find his mother, who has since had a sex change. And his friend Ash, who's trying to get her musical career off the ground, is hopelessly in love with a woman who suffers from poor self esteem. Sweet Underground was shown as part of the 1999 Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
