— by Alyssa Rashbaum

When MTV decided to mix it up and bring the Video Music Awards to MIA, the stars responded in kind, making a major splash as they came to the red carpet by land and — in a VMA first — by sea.

Usher Arrives On A Silver Steed

  Usher's early arrival
Usher's early arrival was a jawdropper as he stood with outstretched arms on the bow of a huge silver yacht, cigar jutting from his mouth. Mr. Entertainment introduced himself as "Tito Montana" — perhaps the musically inclined cousin of Tony Montana from "Scarface"?

Jadakiss And The Red Menace

  Jadakiss' pre-show performance
In the first pre-show performance of the night, Jadakiss strode to the stage in front of a mob of young fans sporting red T-shirts and carrying signs emblazoned with the word "Why?" The sea of kids and placards evoked the protest rallies that took place in New York on Sunday afternoon, as Jada and Anthony Hamilton performed the hit single, updating the lyrics to incorporate lines about incarcerated rapper Shyne's phone privileges and New Jersey Governor James McGreevey.

Lil Jon Shakes Some Salt

Lil Jon arrives with Ludacris and more
Lil Jon rolled up with Ludacris, Lil Scrappy, director John Singleton and some East Side Boyz, screaming "What!" and waving his signature diamond-encrusted Crunk Juice cup. The Boyz may have already been at the juice: The gang was raucous and spirits were high.

P. Diddy And Mase: Opposites Attract

  P. Diddy's arrival
P. Diddy pulled up, dancing atop an even bigger boat than Usher's behemoth, with a posse that included Mase, Bruce Willis and Naomi Campbell, who all sashayed onto the red carpet to the tune of Mase's "Feels So Good." The Mohawked, white suit-bedecked Diddy and black suit-clad Mase jokingly tussled over the spotlight: Diddy shouted out "Vote or die!" while Mase welcomed himself back.

Ashlee Finds Some New Found Glory

Ashlee Simpson introduces New Found Glory
Raven-haired Simpson sister Ashlee took the stage to belt out her single "Pieces of Me," wearing a sequined beret and feathers in her hair. Closing out the tune, Ashlee quickly introduced New Found Glory, who exploded onto the stage to sing "All Downhill From Here," and got up close and personal with some fans by rushing to the front of the stage.
