"You got a girl and you got a chick on the side," Usher explained of "Confessions Part I," "and one day you just decide you gonna confess to your girl, you want to take the relationship to the next level, you want to tell the truth.  I can't say it's a real-life [situation for me], but I know guys who go through that and might feel that. This song is a dramatization where a guy confesses all the stuff he's been doing. That's what I think women need, a real cat that's gonna get real with them. Put it out there, like, 'That's how I feel, you gonna ride with me or you gonna leave me?' "

Usher and Chilli
At the time, Usher was living out a real-life relationship fantasy with a bona fide ride-or-die chick. Chilli was his dimepiece, but more importantly, she was someone who loved him just for being him.

"When it comes to work, we understand each other, we respect each other," he said. "I'm supportive of her, she's supportive of me. That's what real friendship is about. Most importantly, that's what you build first, then it moves to more serious things.

"It [takes] patience to understand your partner, understand your heart. She's my heart."

Aside from the occasional press rumor ("Yeah, media stay in our business," he groused of the hounding of him and his girlfriend at the time. "I think the media is f---ed up if you ask me"), everything seemed peaches and cream. They lived together with her 2-year-old son; the two were seen dancing with each other at parties; Chilli pinched Usher's backside backstage at the Grammy Awards. What went on behind closed doors, good or bad, remained behind those doors.

By the end of March 2004, however, upon Confessions' arrival, everyone was speculating about their early 2004 breakup, especially given the material on the album and Usher's interviews in advance of the LP, in which he promised nothing but real talk on the record.

"I got a reason to believe you been fooling around," he sings on "Truth Hurts" before admitting that his paranoia is unjust. "My guilty conscience is the real reason I wrote this song."

With lyrics like that, his fans began to infer that the reason he and Chilli split was because he was unfaithful.

"People assume things, because as I said, I pull from my personal experiences to make my music," Usher said. "That's why I take this time to speak to you guys and let you know really what it is. You have heard a lot of farfetched things — 'Yo, did you get a girl pregnant?' Nah, that was the creativity of music. I will tell you that I loved [Chilli] a lot and she obviously loved me; it just didn't work out. But cheating is not what caused the relationship to collide and crash. That ain't what broke it up."

When talking about his ended romance, Usher won't get specific — he'll only say they broke up due to irreconcilable differences and because the two found it almost impossible to make compromises.

"I couldn't have been happier at times, and I couldn't have been sadder at times," he reflected. "I'mma be real with you. I definitely was in the position where I was preparing myself to be married to the woman that I dated for two years. We lived together. We really experienced a lot of things prematurely, who knows. But all of that probably had a result in us breaking up. But it was a good relationship while it lasted. I still do love her. Sometimes you got to move on. You got to let it burn if it seems like it's not going to work, or they don't want it to work."

He admits that being separated from Chilli hasn't been the easiest thing in the world.

"In life you're gonna have withdrawals when you have to let a situation go," he continued. "You're gonna feel like, 'Maybe I shouldn't have, maybe I should have,' I don't know. But I do know this much, it didn't work for me. I hope that God blesses her with a person who can understand her, and I hope that God blesses me with a person that can understand me. It was obvious that we were in two different places. I was able to live through that situation and talk about it. I did write about it on this album, I pulled from those experiences, the emotion."

But don't start crying any tears for Usher just yet. He is enjoying the single life.

"You gotta watch him around these chicks," his friend KP said with a smile. "It's one of those things where you gotta be secure in your sh-- to be around him. Girls do outlandish sh-- just to get close. I've seen married women who are with dudes who got paper and even got fame, and they just want to be around Usher."

"It's like when you got a fly little shorty, everybody wanna get with you, and the moment that you don't [have a girl], they sort of go away. But no, the [attention from the women] ain't ease up, though. They keep coming. And man, being single is always good because it allows you the time to get to know yourself, get to know exactly what you want. But I ain't closed the door 100 percent, I hope to someday find the woman of my life."
