Not only can excessive use of cosmetic products be bad for your skin and hair (just ask a dermatologist), it can also be bad for baby, especially if that baby is a boy. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences just published a study about how harmful hidden chemical ingredients known as phthalates can be if there's prenatal exposure — basically, it can cause impaired testicular function and incomplete testicular descent. "There's no safe level," says Dr. Robert Greene, author of the book "Perfect Balance" and the upcoming "Perfect Balance for Pregnancy." "So you need to avoid this as much as possible." But how do you know if your perfumes, hair sprays and makeup contain the stuff, since it's not usually listed as an ingredient, thanks to a handy "trade secret" loophole that exempts manufacturers from listing it? Well, it's usually only used to extend fragrance, so start shopping for unscented or organic lines. Or buy from Aveda, the Body Shop or Urban Decay, since they are all phthalate-free.
