The third trimester is a time of lots of changes, Britney — some more visible than others. And since you've already had knee problems, you should know that you're at risk of a repeat injury. That's because your joints are loosening up, thanks to your increased levels of progesterone, which is great for pelvic expansion, but not so great for your kneecaps. And you know how you can drive a car or ride a bike without thinking through each action? That's your motion memory mode kicking in, and if you operate too much on autopilot while pregnant, you might fall because you have an altered center of gravity and your brain hasn't had a chance to adapt to your new shape yet. To prevent this, Dr. Robert Greene — author of "Perfect Balance" and the upcoming "Perfect Balance for Pregnancy" — recommends that you increase your intake of calcium to at least 1,200 mg a day and up the vitamin D as well. "Recent studies show that in addition to promoting calcium absorption, it will improve her balance and keep her muscle strength up," Greene said. Another way is to strengthen your core muscles via exercise, but keep it light and nothing weight-bearing, and try it in the morning, when you're more awake.
