MTV: So you'll definitely be recording an album?

Black: Oh, I don't know.

MTV: When you guys are traveling, do you talk about what an album might sound like?

Black: We play this game where you name a band and the next person, they have to take the last letter of that band to be the first letter of the band that they name. So you'd say "the Kinks," and the next person would say "Santana," and the next person would say "Apples in Stereo." We do stuff like that.

MTV: David has become an accomplished magician in recent years. Does he ever —

Black: ... And we watch David do card tricks. Every day.

MTV: Are you impressed by his skills?

Black: Yes, I am, actually. He's improving all the time.

MTV: A lot of people my age were turned on to the Pixies through Kurt Cobain. Did you hear the Pixies' influence in Nirvana before he said it?

Black: Not really. I don't really hear it, but I don't think it's not there.

MTV: Are you a Nirvana fan?

Black: I don't really know their records. I know their hits when I walk into a grocery store.

MTV: What kind of music are you listening to right now?

Black: I listen to Neil Young and jazz and classical stations and, if my girlfriend's driving, it tends to be Hall & Oates. So I get a lot of [he sings], "Maneater ... oh oh here she comes, watch out." They're pretty good actually, Hall & Oates. I gotta give them credit. They got a lot of toe-tappers.

MTV: To me, the use of "Where Is My Mind?" in "Fight Club" is one of the best movie-music moments ever. What did you think when you saw it?

Black: A little tear welled up in my eye and rolled down my cheek, stained my Oxford shirt. Yeah, I was very happy. They gave me a bunch of money. It was a good movie, and it was appropriately placed in the film, as opposed to doing it like it was cross-marketing.

MTV: I'm curious about the chemistry in the band. Is it still there?

Black: It's the same lovable awkwardness that it always was. At its best, it's always been lovable. But that's not to say ... [He pauses.] We're four completely different people and we're all scratching our heads at each other. It's a trip. We're not soulmates, but we are bandmates. You know what I mean?. There's a lot of love there, but there's also a lot of friendly confusion. It's subtle, it's unspoken. I can't give you any amazing anecdotes.

MTV: Do you miss your old band, the Catholics, at all?

Black: Not really. At the moment, I'm still quite enjoying having other people pick up my amplifiers for me and tune my guitars for me and playing to 10,000 people [who are] screaming my lyrics back at me. I can't deny it, it's pretty cush. [He laughs.] So yeah, I'm not missing anything. I'm quite happy bringing home the bacon.

MTV: One thing I've read in a lot of Pixies reviews is how your songs are still relevant today. Is that something you think about?

Black: I don't even know what people mean by relevant, but yeah, it's nice. I guess it means they like it or that it doesn't sound extremely dated, I suppose.
