MTV: You said you took a chill pill. Did the others recognize that? Did they say, "You have a different attitude"?

Black: No. I think out of respect, they probably wouldn't say that. We always get along pretty good, even when we weren't getting along. [pause] It may have been awkward, it may have been strained, but we weren't going to sit down and bicker. We were much more professional than that, even at our worst. We were just young and stupid and full of ourselves.

MTV: It's noted constantly that you dissolved the Pixies through faxes. Any regrets about that?

The Pixies Tour Kickoff, Minneapolis, Minnnesota 04.13.04
Black: Yes and no. I think that was kinda cool, but I guess in hindsight it wasn't that friendly. I'm sure that I offended, but it wasn't my intention to offend; it was my intention to avoid any kind of confrontation or discussion. It would have been healthier in the long run, I suppose, to allow everyone to have some closure as opposed to just disappearing.

MTV: So you take 12 years off from playing these songs, and then when you start playing them live again, you have the nerve to record each show and release them as CDs. [Through Discslive, recordings of the shows are available 20 minutes after the gig ends.] How did you decide to do that?

Black: Some guy called us and said, "You wanna do this?" And we were like, "Yeah, sure." It wasn't my bright idea. I haven't listened to them, but they look good.

MTV: Were you worried about putting out warts-and-all live recordings?

  Pixies
"Velouria"
Bossanova

Black: No! I mean, we've never really been ashamed of our mistakes, our lack of slickness or anything. We know that we're good on some level; to be good on that level you have to be kind of rough on other levels, which some people don't realize. If you're going to exude naiveté, you can't really ... walk out there like it's a Sting show. You can't be that well put together and then have this kind of innocent bravado. If you want innocent bravado, then you gotta not give a sh--, you know what I mean?

MTV: I heard that the new song "Bam Thwok" was intended for "Shrek 2." Kim wrote it — have you brought any songs to the band?

Black: [I wrote] another song that was under consideration for the "Shrek 2" thing, but we decided Kim's, in the end, was the better of the two songs.

MTV: Do you plan to bring any new songs?

  Pixies
"Monkey Gone To Heaven"
Doolittle
(4AD)
Black: Well, um ... the powers that be have sent me a calendar, but I haven't peeked at that page yet.

MTV: Surely you're thinking a bit about what's going to happen when the tour's done?

Black: Not really. I gotta find a place to set up my studio. And my girlfriend's having a baby, so I'm sorta gonna be out of action for a while. I don't really see how I'm gonna go on tour unless it's like a family bus. There’ll be three kids then, since Joey has two kids.

MTV: Congratulations on becoming a father. Are you excited?

Black: Very. It's my first time.

MTV: Are you worried about how it will blend with your rock-star life?

Black: Not really. We'll be a showbiz family.

MTV: So you were planning to build a studio ...

Black: It's in storage, so I'm looking for a place to set it up. Hopefully, I can convince the Pixies to record there.

Next: Nirvana, chemistry and Catholics ...
