— by Abbey Goodman

If you were a rock star, what would you hope for in the coming year? Success? Health? An intimate relationship with a certain MTV News reporter? The correct answer is all of the above.

As the year draws to a close and we spend time reflecting on ways to improve our lives, let us look once again to musicians to set the example for the rest of us. Though they seem to have it all, these guys are not content to let 2004 pass without coming up with some new goals for next year. Sure, some of them may be modest, but, really, what rock star isn't? Even Mr. Extravagant himself, P. Diddy, didn't have anything epic lined up for 2005, but give him time. After all, new beginnings can take a while to plan.

Come this time next year, should auld acquaintance or these resolutions be forgot, at least we did our part by committing them to print. Consider it our way of giving back. A constant reminder of your aspirations in black and white means you'll totally be inspired to keep them. Right?

Jay-Z: "I make my New Year's resolutions daily. I just strive to be a better person, and I always believe in karma."

Joel Madden, Good Charlotte: "My New Year's resolutions are to work on [my label] DC Flag Records and Made Clothing, sponsor two kids in Asia, get involved with Africa, go to church more, get married, make a baby, and write and produce for other people."

Ian Grushka, New Found Glory: "My resolution is to stay drug-free. Being that I'm a vegetarian, I don't drink alcohol and I don't smoke ciggs, there isn't much left for me to include in my resolution."

Cyrus Bolooki, New Found Glory: "Eat healthier, exercise more."

Jordan Pundik, New Found Glory: "To get in shape, so when MTV plays our videos a lot this year, I will look fabulous."

Josh Partington, Something Corporate: "To stop playing power chords."

Philip Taylor Sneed, Story of the Year: "To write better songs than Bon Jovi and Garth Brooks put together (which will be near impossible) for our next record, and to assess, diagnose and remove the large growth on the side of [guitarist] Ryan [Thornton Phillips'] face. Looks like I have my work cut out for me."

Omarion: "To spend every day getting closer and closer to God. And buy a Ferrari."

Branden Steineckert, the Used: "My New Year's resolutions are to open my own skateboard company, Twenty Twenty Skateboards (and try to skate a lot more!!), produce demos for bands, produce a record, restore an old '50s car with my friends, and take a vacation with my girl somewhere tropical."

Rich Beddoe, Finger Eleven: "Well, I guess my New Year's resolution would be to try to be more grateful for what I have and stop being such an ungrateful pr--- who thinks the world revolves around him and his band."

Jesse McCartney: "With my crazy work schedule, I've been burning the candle at both ends. This year, I want to try and get way more sleep, and drink less coffee and Red Bull."

Val Emmich: "To make my song 'New Year's Resolution' a big hit next year. It was written almost a year ago about New Year's resolutions and how they can be made at any point of the year. To me, they're a big farce. It's an excuse to feel bad about myself for never keeping them. But this? This is a good one."

Mike Shinoda, Linkin Park: "I think with the 'From the Inside' book coming out, it kind of signals to us that this is the end of this Meteora touring cycle. I'm looking towards new music and a new Linkin Park record and other projects."

Brad Delson, Linkin Park: "My resolution is to hang out more with Sway. I've been calling. I page [him]. I e-mail ..."
