Regardless of how one felt about the accusations Nas made during his "rampage," people on both sides of the fence were shocked. Throughout his career he's always been the shy gangsta, the quiet poet, saving most of words for the mic.

"I don't know what's got into me," Nas said shortly after his blitzkrieg of commentary.

But Nas did know what was burning inside him. Pain. The death of his mother had sent him into a spiral of depression and anger.

"A lot of that happened for me from the loss of my mother this year, and after I had one battle I said, 'Why not battle them all?' I said, 'Why not take on the world?' That was just the beginning of a spree. I was about to come back [calling out] a lot more names and just start a revolution. I was trying to shut down hip-hop. I wanted them to shut me down."

He later realized that to be shut down, to take a break from music, would've been the craziest thing he could've done.

"I had to finish up another album because if I wouldn't have, she'd be mad at me from up there and say, 'That's not how I raised you. Keep it going,' " Nas said. "I realized that if I was to sit around and not do anything, then that would be ingredients for me to go crazy again on the radio and start trouble, or take it to a level where somebody would probably take me away. So I had to keep myself busy and do this record, just for me."

The result is Nas' most personal LP, featuring rhymes about his great loss on tracks like "Warrior Song" and "Dance." "If only I could have one more dance with you, Mama," Nas pleads while actually singing on "Dance." He then goes on to rap, "I wish you were here/ I miss you more each second I breathe/ ... If only I could hear your voice and your laughter/ Just one more time, my chest would be filled up with sunshine."

"I just wanted to do something she'd be proud of."
"She was a classic woman, a woman with style, and that's all in me. I became more like her recently," he said. "I don't have to scream at you to get your attention. I don't have to go all out my character. She wasn't the type who was flashy all the time, but she could dress. She wasn't the type that would gossip and lie. So that encouraged me, inspired me when working on this record.

"I'm gonna put my heart and soul and what I feel [into] songs like 'I Can' for the ghetto kids," he added. "Songs like 'Made You Look,' that's reminiscent of the days you'd go to clubs and they're shooting and you gotta run out of there. 'Zone Out' with the Bravehearts is reminiscent of some Public Enemy stuff. I think as far as music is concerned, I just wanted to do something she'd be proud of."
