In contemplating story angles for the Atlanta episode of "My Block," MTV News' exposé on hip-hop scenes in cities across the country, it wasn't ATL's status as a major rap capital that distinguished it from other locations.

Most hip-hop fans know that, for the last decade, Atlanta's mix of country charm and city life has supplanted the hold New York and Los Angeles have traditionally held on the genre. What stood out more than any other factor is that, in spite of their collective successes, Atlanta's artists have an ever-present, tight bond with one another. Artists often intimately work together, never publicly revealing private squabbles. It is the rare — and true — music community, and that idea could never be expressed more profoundly than in re-creating the famous 1958 Art Kane photograph dubbed "A Great Day in Harlem." That image illustrated the largess of the jazz community of the day, and "A Great Day in Atlanta" would do the same for hip-hop 47 years later.

Spreading word of the idea and soliciting artists was never as conceptually difficult as one would think, which is a testament to the spirit of Atlanta. From superstar producers to mixtape DJs, multiplatinum MCs to underground legends, Atlanta's artists made time in their busy schedules to come out on a chilly morning on November 18. And the familial vibe that occurred in the hours before the actual photograph was snapped made the picture seem anticlimactic in comparison. It was a joyous occasion, beloved and warm. It was a great day indeed.

Tune in December 11 at 2 p.m. ET/PT for the premiere of
"My Block: Atlanta" on MTV2.
