Behind The Scenes Of "The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers"

Thanks to "Becoming: Blink-182," the world learned how to look like Mark, Tom and Travis. Instructions were doled out on how to affect wavy hair and sexy stances in "Becoming: Incubus." And now, it's time for the coolest transformation lesson of them all — "Becoming: A Hobbit." (Click here for photos).

MTV traveled to the New Zealand set and was on hand as the trilogy's four Hobbit actors — Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan — reunited to film some "pick-up shots" for this years "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."

Although all three "Rings" movies — based on J.R.R. Tolkien's legendary fantasy books — were filmed together, director Peter Jackson and company decided that they could use a little more footage before "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" and next year's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" are released.

"They've realized that there are certain things that they are missing," Wood explained, "certain moments that they need."

"And then they flew us down here," Astin said, "and now we're going to film them."

It was back to the makeup chair for the four lads, who again underwent the process that changes them from young Hollywood stars into small, big-footed, countryside creatures that enjoy smoking pipes and living in holes in the hills.

What's step one in becoming a hobbit? According to Wood, it's having a clean-shaven face. "Hobbits don't have facial hair," he explained.

Next comes prosthetics for the nose to give it a more rounded appearance. Then the ears, which have slight points, and a wig, fashioned into a curly, mod-like coif.

"[The wig] is the defining Frodo moment," Wood said, referring to his Hobbit character and "Rings" protagonist, Frodo Baggins. Hobbits as a whole, however, are surely more renowned for, and most easily recognized by, their large, hairy feet.

"[T]he mythical, legendary feet. It's the really, truly defining Hobbit characteristic," Wood admitted.

With wigs, ears, noses, and feet in place, all that is left for a complete and total Hobbit transformation is "Middle Earth" attire, and of course, weaponry. A Hobbit can never be too cautious with all manner of wizards, Orcs and beasts roaming around.

To watch Wood, Astin, Boyd and Monaghan become Frodo, Samwise, Pippin and Merry, tune in to the 2002 MTV Movie Awards on Thursday, June 6th, where you can also see director Peter Jackson accept the golden popcorn for Best Movie and get a look at exclusive footage from "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers."
