Back on the set, the video Dina is taking quite a beating. "How's your leg?" someone asks Victoria Hay. "It's all right, but I cut my foot," she replies. She doesn't want people to know how badly she's getting bruised with all the falls she's taking (she's doing her own stunts). Lindsay's advice to Drake, Victoria's video husband, has been, "Try to make it look natural."

"[Lindsay] knows what she wants," Drake says. "There's no beating around the bush. She's patient and she's calm, and she gets her points across very clearly."

"Some directors are control freaks," says Jim Hawkinson, the video's director of photography. "She's not. She trusts us to give her what she wants. And that's the most important thing in being a director — knowing what you want. And in this case, she wanted a controversial video that would make a statement, that would let her vent, that would show that her life is a fishbowl."

"Everybody go to the bathroom!" yells another assistant director, Mike Kahn — meaning he wants the extras to crowd around the window and watch Lindsay's breakdown.

"Red vest, walk away! Afro girl, walk away! You don't want to watch anymore! Come on, cop car!"

Lindsay's not nearly as banged up as Victoria, but she's getting there. "My knees hurt so much!" she says, lifting up her dress. "I just dropped so hard on the floor — look at my knees!"

It's now 6 a.m., and Lindsay wants to get the final shot before sunrise: In it, the storefront window explodes. The actual explosion will be added later, digitally, so for now the window is removed from its frame, leaving a wide-open space for the chilly outside air to blow through.

But now what? "If I end it here," Lindsay says, "It's an unfinished story." She thinks, deciding to improvise. "Can't I look up, jump out?" She needs to step through the window frame. "When I sing the last line, I'm going to turn, here," she decides. "I'm not going straight ahead." She realizes she'll be stepping barefoot onto a New York City sidewalk — "Gross!"

Lindsay tries a number of run-throughs of the scene. Finally, when she's satisfied with it: "This is a wrap for Lindsay Lohan!" she yells in triumph. And then, with glee, "I hate her!"

Tommy Mottola is impressed. "This song, this video, this album, are going to show that she's a serious artist," he says. "She's not just a teen Hollywood actress playing around with a singing career. This will show what she's capable of. And I bet you she'll get offered more jobs as a director than as an actress."

"It's been a whirlwind, I'm really tired and delirious," Lindsay says wearily at the end of the long day. "It's been very therapeutic for me. This is very emotional. I had to get into a certain headspace, and I don't come out of it very easily.

"I would consider directing again, my next video," she says, before pleading, "Maybe a happy song next time?"
