Coming from the thrash- and punk-influenced Snot, Smith found a comfortable home in Limp Bizkit. So pleased were the guys with their new member that they shelved what they'd recorded and started over.

"Mike brought in a breath of fresh air," Durst said. "Creatively, it fit like a glove. It made life easier and more positive. It made us look forward to getting together as a band so much more. The positive effect he had on me just made the whole experience of Limp Bizkit feel like a brand new entity."

Just because I don't like Wendy's hamburgers doesn't mean I'm going to go to Wendy's and start pissing all over the door..."
Despite the successful addition of Smith, and despite Durst's new worldview, the singer isn't free from the plague of pressures, some of which are examined on "Underneath the Gun," where he sings the lines "Stress is tremendous," "No one on this planet is like me" and "I think I'm a failure who's living on memories."

The biggest pressure was the pressure to please everyone, Durst said. He's aware that he can't, but what bothers him is that the displeased are so vocal about it. "There's something inside of me that doesn't understand why people who aren't pleased have to throw it in my face so much," he confessed. "I mean, just because I don't like Wendy's hamburgers doesn't mean I'm going to go to Wendy's and start pissing all over the door."

Don't misunderstand this. He's all for people speaking their minds, but enough is enough already.

"If there are moments in your life where you believe in something so much you speak out about it, that's cool," he said. "But if you do it all the time, it starts to become a cliché. And that tends to make it hard to tell who is really feeling it from the heart and who is doing it because other people are doing it."

Ironically, it's the people who harbor the deepest, most sincere hatred toward him that Durst admires most. He demonstrated this at many Summer Sanitarium Tour stops, when he'd ask for everyone who hates Limp Bizkit to raise their hands. Not surprisingly, many did.

"Those are the people who are leaders," he said. "Those people know what they feel. I actually give a lot of credit to the haters who really believe that. That's bold and courageous and it deserves some recognition. It's honorable."

And just as Durst appeared to usurp Richard Gere's place next to the Dalai Lama, his chainsaw disposition returned. "But you know, other times it's like, 'Shut the f--- up. Keep it to yourself.' "

"A lot of people end up hating and assassinating and banding together against individuals who are so straight-up with their feelings," he said. "Everything [these individuals] do comes from the heart. And I don't give a f--- what anybody thinks. I do what I feel in my heart to be true. I say from my heart what I feel to be true. Like, a lot of big leaders in the world, ... they speak their word and that's how they feel and some people can't stand that."

Things look to get only brighter for the psychotic animal turned philosophical teddy bear. Durst claims he's found someone special who'll hopefully help him achieve the desires he laid bare on his album.

"I feel like my life is starting over," he said. "I had an epiphany, and it's really put in perspective what I couldn't get my hands around. For once in my life I actually really bond with [someone] like I've never bonded with anybody ever before. It's really making my creative process, my ambition, and my drive — everything — just become very positive. And it's been very overwhelming for me. And I just feel things happening. I feel things changing."
