A Tribe Called Quest/De La Soul/Leaders Of The New School/Black Moon/Wu-Tang Clan - The Love Movement
In the early '90s there was a wave of classic underground music called backpack rap that focused on rugged lyrics and hardcore beats. These guys weren't focused on having big chains, popping bottles or even model chicks. Don't get us wrong, even though those records didn't make our top 10 list, we'll forever be enamored with albums that almost made it, such as A Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders, Black Moon's Enta the Stage, De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising, Leaders of the New School's A Future Without a Past ... and Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).
The Argument
Some of the listmakers were very bothered by what Buttahman called the whole list's "anti-backpacker" bent. ...
Buttahman: This is anti-backpacker. I'm not feeling this list. It's all gangster. I think [A Tribe Called Quest's] Midnight Marauders should be in there.
Kurt Williamson: Yeah.
Tone Boots: Are you kidding me? The backpack movement did not start with Midnight Marauders. We was going out, hanging out with the dude with the backpack before that album came out, and wondering why the f--- am I supposed to come out here with a backpack on? A big camping backpack, he'd be in the club with it. They be walking around with backpacks with nothing in them. It was just a style.
Buttahman: That was our thing ...
Tone Boots: But I'm saying that Marauders didn't start backpacks.
Buttahman: Not even to go into the whole backpack argument, I'm just talking about from a music standpoint, that album, to me, sonically, is one of the most innovative hip-hop albums.
Tone Boots: It is if it did start that movement.
Williamson: It didn't start that movement. But I would say it started my movement.
Buttahman: Midnight Marauders is one of the sickest hip-hop albums of all time, and I understand that we're kind of going ...
Sway: Wanna take off N---az4Life?
Buttahman: Aw, no, hell no.
Sway: (Laughs) So what would you take off the list to get Marauders on there?
Buttahman: It's just one of those things that's gonna have to float out there in the universe.
