For the latest episode of MTV's new interview show "The Table," Kurt Loder sat down with Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl. The two took turns selecting from a list of categories, which determined the questions posed to Grohl. There wasn't time in the show to present all of the questions and answers, though, and rather than leave the extra material on the cutting room floor, we present it to you here. "The Table" airs Friday, Ocotber 18 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on MTV2.
Kurt Loder: OK, you pick a topic.
Dave Grohl: How about "Fear Factor."
Loder: What's the one thing you are most afraid of, and when was the last time you encountered it?
Grohl: I'm kind of claustrophobic ... It's not even like enclosed spaces. It's like I hate being stuck in one band, you know? Just being stuck is the biggest drag, for fear that, you know, just that you can't get out. So even just ... sometimes in airplanes I can't stand that fact that I can't get off if I want to.
Loder: What happens? What do you do?
Grohl: Have an extra cocktail. But that claustrophobia is the biggest. I have crazy claustrophobic dreams, weird elevator dreams where the elevator closes in and all of a sudden I am lying down — oh my God, it's a casket. Just freaky stuff like that.
Loder: I'm gonna pick one. It'll be "Heavier Than Heaven." ... You started as a songwriter and guitarist. When you joined Nirvana that sort of changed. Were you happy about the credit that you were getting in there, you and Chris [Novoselic]? Because [the songwriting credit] was all so vague. It was like "songs by Kurt Cobain and Nirvana," and I think you guys only got named on one track.
Grohl: I don't really think about that stuff, because every band I have been in has been a collaborative effort. You know, Nirvana used to start rehearsals with the three of us just jamming. For like a half an hour, just noise and freeform crap — and usually it was crap. But sometimes things would come from it, and some songs on Nevermind came from that, and "Heart Shaped Box" and stuff on In Utero just happened that way.
Loder: "Down the Toilet" let's see what that is. OK, you keep your Video Music Awards and your platinum albums in your bathroom ...
Grohl: I moved them.
Loder: Were people peeing on them or something?
Grohl: No, but I did. You know that little flag at the top? You can fit a toilet paper roll on that, so I had that going for a while. But I moved them into my office. ... One of my Grammys my bedroom door won't stay open for some reason, so I keep it open with my Grammy. ... I think it's kind of kick-ass that I have a Grammy holding up my bedroom door. Every night I walk my lady into the room, she knows what's going down.
Loder: What band have you seen recently, maybe live, that you thought, well, maybe they'll be all right and they knocked you out?
Grohl: My Morning Jacket. ... I think they're from Tennessee or something like that. It's a great record.
