Band Scoring:

The following is a description of the scoring categories that are used to rate a band's performance in a given scoring period.


Video Scoring

MTV Playlist Score
MTV Playlist Guest Score

A band gets 50 points for each of its videos that is on the MTV Playlist each week. If the band is listed as a guest on a video in the playlist, the band gets 25 points.
For example: In the week of 10/11-10/18 Carlos Santana (feat. Michelle Branch) "Game of Love" is on the MTV Playlist. In the scoring Period of 10/16-10/22, Santana gets 50 points as the primary artist and Michelle Branch gets 25 points as a guest for this video. During the same period, P. Diddy co-stars on Fabolous & P. Diddy (feat. Jagged Edge) "Trade it All (Part 2)" is a guest on 3LW (feat. P. Diddy and Loon). P. Diddy gets 75 points for this period.

MTV2 Playlist Score
MTV2 Playlist Guest Score

A band gets 50 points for each of its videos that is on the MTV2 Playlist each week. If the band is listed as a guest on a video in the playlist, the band gets 25 points.


MTV Hits Score

A Band is awarded 15 points for each of its videos on the MTV Hits Playlist during the week indicated. 

MTV2 Subterranean Playlist Score

A Band is awarded 15 points for each of its videos on the MTV2 Subterranean Playlist during the week indicated. 

MTV2 Headbangers Ball Score

A Band is awarded 15 points for each of its videos on the MTV2 Headbangers Ball Playlist during the week indicated. 

Buzzworthy Selection Score

A Band is awarded 100 points for each time its selected as Buzzworthy. The points are awarded only for the first week that the band is Buzzworthy. So a maximum of 100 points per video selected Buzzworthy.

Handpicked Selection Score

A Band is awarded 100 points for each time its selected as Handpicked. The points are awarded only for the first week that the band is Handpicked. So a maximum of 100 points per video selected Handpicked.

TRL Score

A band's TRL Score is based on two values: the rank of the artist's video in the TRL countdown and the change in that video's rank from the previous week.

A band gets 5 points for every rank above 10 that its video holds in the most recent TRL Top 10 chart. The number 10 video gets the lowest score, 5 points. The number 1 video gets the highest score, 50 points.

In addition, a band gets (or loses) 5 points for every rank gained (or lost) since the previous week.

For example: in the week of 10/11-10/18, Craig David's video "What's Your Flava?" moved from 10th place to 6th place. 6th place in the countdown is worth 25 points. Moving up 4 places in the countdown is worth 20 points. This means that in the scoring period of 10/16-10/22, Craig David would get a TRL Score of 45.
  • Videos that debut in the current chart are ranked 11 for the previous week.
  • Videos that appeared in the previous week's cart but not in the current chart are ranked 11 for the current week.
  • Highest score per video, 100 points. Maximum penalty per video, -50 points.
  • Bands with more than one video get points for both videos.
The TRL Score is calculated as follows:

[(11 - current week rank) x 5 points] +
[(previous week rank - current rank) x 5 points]


Direct Effect Score

Like the TRL score (see above), a Band's Direct Effect score is based on two values, the rank of the artist's video in the Direct Effect countdown, and the change in that video's rank from the previous week.

A band gets 5 points for every rank above 7 that its video holds in the most recent Direct Effect chart. The number 7 video gets the lowest score, 5 points. The number 1 video gets the highest score, 35 points.

In addition, a band gets (or loses) 5 points for every rank gained (or lost) since the previous week.
  • Videos that debut in the current chart are ranked 8 for the previous week.
  • Videos that appeared in the previous week's chart but not in the current chart are ranked 8 for the current week.
  • Highest score per video, 70 points. Maximum penalty per video, -35 points.
  • Bands with more than one video get points for both
The Direct Effect score is calculated as follows:

[(8 - current week rank) x 5 Points] +
[(previous week rank - current rank) x 5 points]


All Things Rock Score

Like the TRL score (see above), a band's All Things Rock score is based on two values, the rank of the artist's video in the All Things Rock countdown, and the change in that video's rank from the previous week.

A band gets 5 points for every rank above 10 that its video holds in the most recent All Things Rock chart. The number 10 video gets the lowest score, 5 points. The number 1 video gets the highest score, 50 points.

In addition, a band gets (or loses) 5 points for every rank gained (or lost) since the previous week.

  • Videos that debut in the current chart are ranked 11 for the previous week.
  • Videos that appeared in the previous week's chart but not in the current chart are ranked 11 for the current week.
  • Highest score per video, 100 points. Maximum penalty per video, -50 points.
  • Bands with more than one video get points for both.
The All Things Rock score is calculated as follows:

[(6 - current week rank) x 5 Points] +
[(previous week rank - current rank) x 5 points]

MTV2 Hip-Hop Score

Like the TRL score (see above), a band's MTV2 Hip-Hop score is based on two values, the rank of the artist's video in the MTV2 Hip-Hop countdown, and the change in that video's rank from the previous week.

A band gets 2 points for every rank above 20 that its video holds in the most recent MTV2 Hip-Hop chart. The number 20 video is gets the lowest score, 2 points. The number 1 video gets the highest score, 40 points.

In addition, a band is gets (or loses) 2 points for every rank gained (or lost) since the previous week.
  • Videos that debut in the current chart are ranked 21 for the previous week.
  • Videos that appeared in the previous week's chart but not in the current chart are ranked 21 for the current week.
  • Highest score per video, 80 points. Maximum penalty per video, -40 points.
  • Bands with more than one video get points for both
The MTV2 Hip Hop score is calculated as follows:


[(21 - current week rank) x 5 Points] +
[(previous week rank - current rank) x 5 points]

MTV2 Rock Score

Like the TRL score (see above), a band's MTV2 Rock score is based on two values, the rank of the artist's video in the MTV2 Rock countdown, and the change in that video's rank from the previous week.

A band gets 2 points for every rank above 20 that its video holds in the most recent MTV2 Rock chart. The number 20 video gets the lowest score, 2 points. The number 1 video gets the highest score, 40 points.

In addition, a band gets (or loses) 2 points for every rank gained (or lost) since the previous week.
  • Videos that debut in the current chart are ranked 21 for the previous week.
  • Videos that appeared in the previous week's chart but not in the current chart are ranked 21 for the current week.
  • Highest score per video, 80 points. Maximum penalty per video, -40 points.
  • Bands with more than one video get points for both
The MTV2 Rock score is calculated as follows:

[(21 - current week rank) x 5 Points] +
[(previous week rank - current rank) x 5 points]


Control Freak Score

A band's Control Freak Score is based on two values: 3 points for each time the band's video was voted on in Control Freak, and 9 points for each time that video won.

The Control Freak score is calculated as follows:

[number of times voted on x 3 Points] + [number of times won x 9 points]


Video Clash Score

A Band's Video Clash Score is the sum of two values, Video Clash Spins Score and Video Clash Wins Score, which are derived from the performance of the Band's video on Video Clash during the previous week. Please Note: these totals include original episodes only, and not repeats of a previously viewed episode.

Video Clash Spins Score

A Band is awarded 3 points for every time any of their videos is offered as a voting choice on MTV's Video Clash

The Video Clash Spins Score is calculated as follows:

(number of times a video was voted on) * 3 Points.

Video Clash Wins Score

A band is awarded 6 points for every time any of their videos wins its round and is played on MTV's Video Clash

The Video Clash Wins Score is calculated as follows:

(number of times a video was played) x 6 Points.

Video Clash Score

The Video Clash Score is calculated as follows:

Video Clash Spins Score + Video Clash Wins Score

Viewer’s Video Pick Score

A Band's Viewer's Video Pick Score is the sum of two values, Viewer Video Pick Contender Score and Viewer Video Pick Wins Score, which are derived from the performance of the Band's video on Viewer Video Pick during the previous week.

Viewer Video Pick Contender Score

A Band is awarded 50 points for every time any of their videos is offered as a voting choice on MTV's Viewer Video Pick

Viewer Video Pick Wins Score

A band is awarded 200 points for every time any of their videos wins its round of Viewer Video Pick.

Viewer Video Pick Score

A Band's Viewer Video Pick Score is calculated as follows:

Viewer Video Pick Contender Score + Viewer Video Pick Wins Score

MTV.com Scoring

Top 100 Bands A-Z Score

A band's Top 100 Bands A-Z Score is the based on two values, the band's rank on the Top 100 Bands A-Z, and the change in that band's rank from the previous week.

A band gets 4 points for every rank above 100 that its video holds in the most recent Top 100 Bands A-Z. The number 100 band is gets the lowest score, 4 points. The number 1 band gets the highest score, 400 points.

In addition, a band is gets (or loses) 2 points for every rank gained (or lost) since the previous week.
  • Videos that debut in the current chart are ranked 101 for the previous week.
  • Videos that appeared in the previous week's chart but not in the current chart are ranked 101 for the current week.
  • Highest score per band, 600 points. Maximum penalty per video, -200 points.
The Top 100 Bands A-Z score is calculated as follows:

[(101 - current week rank) x 4 Points] +
[(previous week rank - current rank) x 2 points]


Favorite Bands

Bands are awarded points based on the number of MTV.com Members that add the Band to their favorites in their Member Profiles each week.

For every 10 MTV.com Members that add a band to their favorites, the band gets 1 point. If 1 to 10 members add the band to their favorites, the band gets 1 point, 2 points if 11-20 members add the band and so on.

For example, in the period 10/01 - 10/08, 1,826 MTV.com Members added Avril Lavigne to their Favorite Bands. In the scoring period 10/01-10/08, Avril Lavigne's Favorite Bands score of would be 183.

The Favorite Bands Score is calculated as follows:

(members who added band to favorites/10) rounded up to the next whole number.


MTV News Headlines Score
A band gets 20 points for every News headline published on MTV.com that is displayed in the News Archive for that Band. Please note: Updates to existing stories may not be counted as new publishes.

Album Scoring

Billboard Top 200 Albums (Album 1) Score
Billboard Top 200 Albums (Album 2) Score

Bands are awarded points for their albums' rank in the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart. For scoring purposes, only two of a Band's albums are counted. If a Band has more than two albums on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, only the two most recent Albums are counted.

A band's Billboard Top 200 Albums Score is based on two values, the rank of the album on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart and the change of the album's rank since the previous week.
  • Albums that debut in the current chart are ranked 201 for the previous week.
  • Albums that appeared in the previous week's Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart but not in the current chart are ranked 201 for the current week.
  • Highest score per album, 400 points. Maximum penalty per video, -200 points.
Billboard Top 200 Albums Rank Score is calculated as follows:

[(201 - most recent rank) x 1 point] +
[(previous week rank- most recent rank) x 1 point]
