Destiny's Child can take their pick of producers. Naturally, the trio chose the best. Jay-Z was working with the Neptunes? Book 'em. We've never worked with Rockwilder? He's next. But more than that, Destiny's Child were looking for somebody who could bring a new dimension to their music. "We always like to hear something different to our songs and, if it's a hot mix, then of course we're going to use it," Beyoncé said.
For Beyoncé, Kelly and Michelle, the success of Destiny's Child has presented other opportunities. The first to put out a solo effort, Michelle recorded a gospel album, Heart to Yours (out April 16). Kelly will make a guest appearance on UPN's "The Hughleys" (March 25). And Beyoncé has struck out on her own with some acting gigs.
Her first role was, appropriately, the lead character in the MTV movie Carmen: A Hip Hopera, directed by Robert Townsend. The movie, based on the 1875 Georges Bizet opera, finds Carmen, "the most beautiful girl in the world," breaking men's hearts on her journey to fame. It was a legitimate role: she acted, rapped and co-starred with reputable thespians Mos Def and Mekhi Phifer. Nevertheless, for a musician to go from a made-for-TV movie to playing the ingenue in a full-fledged Hollywood production the still-untitled third installment of the "Austin Powers" movie series was a big change and a challenge for Beyoncé.
"I know I am going to get criticized and I know that people are not going to give me a fair chance, just from what happened to all the other [musicians] that became actors before me. But I can't concentrate on that. There were a lot of actors up for the role, people who didn't sing, and I wouldn't have got the part if I didn't have the talent to stand by it." If nothing else, Beyoncé delivers confidence.
Always looking to stretch in different directions and challenge limitations on her ability, Beyoncé said that she wants her next role to be over-the-top dramatic. "I like the crying. I want to play a drug addict or something where I can get real ugly and get bruised down. People expect me to do the big glamorous mess, but I want to do something dirty and raw."
