If Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carrabba were making a tape of music that he likes to listen to, what songs would he pick? Well, Carrabba put together such a mixtape for MTV Satellite Radio recently, and everyone from Missy Elliott to Bob Dylan to Archers of Loaf earned a spot on it.
"I have no idea," Carrabba said about what the mixtape says about him. "Um, it says that I'm handsome, and intelligent, caring, generous. ... Did I mention handsome?"
While he may not know what the track list says about his inner being, Carrabba is very clear on why each song made the cut. Here, the mouth of Dashboard talks about some of the tunes he chose. ...

Justin Timberlake, "Rock Your Body"
 |
I really don't like 'NSYNC, but I'm not going to be shy — I love Justin Timberlake's solo record. I think it's great, I think it's funky and groovy and it's fun, and I think that's missing from a lot of music, the fun. So that's why I put that on there. And I like to rock my body.
Vendetta Red, "Shatterday"
 |
We played with Vendetta Red in Washington state a little over a year ago. There are a few bands that have hit me watching them live, such as Fugazi or Jawbox, where I've been so floored I've been like, "That could be the best show I've ever seen in my life." And I couldn't believe it, but Vendetta Red, this band I'd never heard of, were giving me the same feeling. They had so much energy onstage. They were really powerful and dynamic and the singer looked like a young Roger Daltrey [from the Who] and he was working the crowd in the same fashion. "Shatterday" was the song they played first that day.
Foo Fighters, "Breakout"
There's not a Foo Fighters song that I don't love. Dave Grohl makes you forget he was even in Nirvana — which was maybe the best rock band ever — because he is so good at doing this also. [The fact he was in Nirvana] becomes almost an afterthought. What grabbed me with this one is it's silly, but it's got that "Burn it in the blastoff" line. That phrase just grabbed me. It's so energetic and it's like Grohl's taken off himself.
The Get Up Kids, "10 Minutes"
You know the songs you listen to in the morning that get you going before coffee? I can't even function before coffee, but I can't even quite make my coffee before I listen to this song. So I get up, I put it on, and it gets me charged up for some reason. I don't sing, I don't do anything when it's on. I just kind of lull myself awake to the tune. Sometimes I listen to it before I go onstage. It's one of those songs that's got such energy and drive that I get the goose bumps. It makes me want to run around.
Bob Dylan, "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go"
When you tour with a bunch of different people over the years, you become saturated with their musical tastes also. Somebody that used to be in our band, Mike Stroud, he kind of turned me on to Dylan about four years ago and really got me fired up. I had always liked Dylan, but he really gave me the tutelage, sat me down and said, "You're going to listen to this stuff." I feel like I'm always leaving, always on my way out to tour or something, and that song [expresses that] sentiment.
Missy Elliott, "Work It"
I think Missy Elliott is possibly the best songwriter of our era. I think she's phenomenal. I think she's the best producer, the best songwriter, she's absolutely incredibly talented as a star, but behind the scenes she's just a genius. Anytime Missy Elliott puts a song on the radio, it's the best song that's on the radio, period.
