The sort of mixtape Blink-182 might play in their tour bus would
contain everything from Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones to Kelis and
Lil Jon. Those acts and more are on the mix the pop-punk trio recently put
together for MTV Satellite Radio.
"I love mixtapes," singer/bassist Mark Hoppus said. "Mixtapes and
word of mouth are the best ways to find out about bands. A lot of
people miss out on great music because they're so concerned about
defining themselves by what they don't listen to."
Drummer Travis Barker agrees, and takes it a step further. "It would be cool if
punk rock bands did like hip-hop bands do and you could buy underground
punk mixtapes."
Here, the guys talk about some of the tracks they could listen to over and over again.
****
Pink Floyd, "Hey You"
Mark Hoppus: It's such a beautiful, gorgeous song. It's so emotional and
expressive of feeling alone, feeling lost. It's a great, great song. I
listened to The Wall a lot when I was in high school and fell in
love with it. My friends and I always watched the movie; we really got
into The Wall. In fact, we got into that album so much that I
didn't hear a lot of other Pink Floyd stuff for a long time.
The Cure, "Push"
Hoppus: "Push" is one of my favorite Cure songs. I love that guitar
intro. It reminds me of high school and growing up. I was so into the
Cure — and still am. I love the Cure. They're a gigantic
influence on the way I write songs, my taste in music and all kinds of
stuff. They're an amazing band. If I had to pick one song I could
listen to for the rest of my life, "Push" would definitely be up there
— at least this week.
Fugazi, "Waiting Room"
Tom DeLonge: I remember when Minor Threat were around. They were huge and rad and one of the first hardcore bands that spoke for something and really
had a message. Then Fugazi came out, and no one could understand why
they were playing so slow. But everyone really liked it and was like,
"What happened?" It was the first time people heard punkers really
playing their instruments and taking it to a new level. There were
bands like the Clash and even the Who, but Fugazi were more our
generation, so they meant a lot to me. "Waiting Room" was the big one.
It was the first song where everyone was like, "That's the one!"
Fischerspooner, "Tone Poem"
Hoppus: I love that song. I love the whole record. "Tone Poem" has this
really dark, slow, sub-bassy keyboard sound. It's not even singing,
it's almost whispering. It's really cool and takes you to a different
place.
Rolling Stones, "Wild Horses"
Travis Barker: One of the best love songs in the world. I love the Rolling
Stones. Me and the girlfriend I'm with right now like listening to that
song while drinking champagne and wine. It's, like, romantic. It's a
cool song, you know?
Rancid, "Tropical London"
Hoppus: Rancid's been our heroes for years and years. They're an amazing
band. The last time we played in Boston, we finished our show and ran
to a van. We drove across town and Rancid were just going onstage. We
watched their set and were blown away by how great they are. "Tropical
London," from their new album [Indestructible], is an awesomely
beautiful song. You can tell when Tim sings that he's singing straight
from his heart.
Motion City Soundtrack, "The Future Freaks Me Out"
Hoppus: It's a rad song. I love it. I'm really into the Motion City
Soundtrack record I Am the Movie, and I love Justin Pierre's
lyrics, the way he uses words. I can't even describe how rad his lyric
structure is. It's really cool.
Ned's Atomic Dustbin, "Happy"
Hoppus: I love Ned's Atomic Dustbin. They have two bass players. One
plays low bass stuff and the other plays high, almost lead-bass kinds
of things. It's really cool and it influenced my bass playing a lot.
The beginning of "Happy" inspired me to write a song called "Carousel,"
which has a similar intro played on the top two bass strings. I really
got into that style because of Ned's Atomic Dustbin.
