Beyoncé: Backstage At The B'Day Videos

Beyoncé had two weeks to make eight videos. How did she make that happen? With a lot of help and a little ingenuity: B. and one of the directors, Melina (yes, just Melina) take a look back ...

Beyoncé and Shakira only had 40 minutes to learn the choreography for this two-day shoot, so Shakira took Beyoncé under her wing and taught her a few belly-dancing moves. "It was a fantastic experience to work with her," Shakira said. "She's an amazing performer and a very nice human being."

"Kitty Kat"/"Green Light"
Of all the clips, the three-day "Green Light" shoot gave Beyoncé the most battle scars — mostly from the patent-leather, ballet-pointe heels she wears in it, which not only blistered her feet but sent her legs into muscle spasms after the 18-hour shoot (the third video she'd shot in five days). She also fell down the stairs! The half-day shoot for "Kitty Kat," by comparison, was a breeze — except for getting the cats to cooperate. "They were definitely the most diva out of anybody," director Melina said. "Those cats were mad. We had animal trainers, but you really can't train a cat."

Beyoncé did her own hair and makeup for this clip shot in inexpensive Super 8 film, in which she emulates Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and Barbra Streisand.

In between "Kitty Kat" and "Green Light," B. shot "Upgrade U" in a day and a half, with Jay-Z contributing his portion first. Afterward, Beyoncé studied his scene, and then did her impersonation. "If anybody knows Jay-Z, it would be Beyoncé," Melina said. But as far as the high-end designer gear they sing about in the song, Melina can only remember one brand on set: Adidas.

"Get Me Bodied"

"Get Me Bodied"
Beyoncé took two days to shoot "Get Me Bodied" — a luxury for her harried schedule, but considering they had 50 extras, it's also a miracle that it didn't take longer. Beyoncé's mother Tina made about 80 dresses for this Anthony Mandler-directed clip, so in return, Beyoncé brings back the Bump, her mom's favorite dance. Though the heels weren't as tough as the ones in "Green Light," Beyoncé, Kelly, Michelle and Solange still had to "suck it up," B. said, because the heels were 6-inch platforms that made dancing, especially in gravel, not much fun. "They were mad because that hurt," Beyoncé said. "It takes a lot of leg strength."

"Freakum Dress"

"Freakum Dress"
Near the end of the two weeks of shooting, Beyoncé sent her mom into overdrive making freakum dresses — 30 in all, eight of which were for Beyoncé. Sometimes Tina Knowles would have to make dresses on the spot during the 12-hour shoot: She'd whip up a "dress" in 10 minutes flat by taking fabric from one dress, making a slit in it, draping it and putting a belt on it. Only one accessory wasn't from her mom: Beyoncé borrowed the glasses she wears at the podium from her makeup artist, Francesca.

"Suga Mama"
B'Day
(Sony)
"Suga Mama"
Despite being from Texas, Beyoncé had never ridden a mechanical bull before — but during her warm-ups, you'd never have known it ... at least, not until they started shooting. "The man who came with the bull was playing a little game," Melina said, "because every time we called 'Action!' he made it more difficult for her, made it go faster." And because Beyoncé tried to do tricks too complicated for a novice — putting her foot up, turning around, lying back — she kept falling off. So they shot those scenes at 12 frames a second, with her singing twice as fast, so that she wouldn't have to be on the horse for as long. Even so, they worked until 4 a.m. ...

"Still in Love (Kissing You)"

"Still in Love (Kissing You)"
A song Beyoncé recorded at the last minute, not intended for the album, became her 11th-hour contribution and closing clip for the video anthology ... mostly because everyone told her she'd be crazy not to. She took director Cliff Watts (who also shot Beyoncé's Sports Illustrated cover) on a trip to Miami and, after shopping for a couple of black bathing suits for costumes, they shot it on Super 8, with Beyoncé doing her own hair and makeup (which consisted only of a little bit of bronzer and a whole lot of sun). Beyoncé recalled, "It was just us and a boombox."
