Yeah, they're a classic post-alt-rock success story. Yeah, their debut album, "Yourself or Someone Like You," went multi-platinum. Yeah, they have a funny name.

But maybe the biggest story about the guys of Matchbox 20 right now has more to do with the rediscovery of a classic rock god than it does with a bunch of Florida whippersnappers. After all, who could have predicted that the band's smart, edgy, romantic frontman, Rob Thomas, would be looking at a possible Grammy Award for co-writing a smash hit single for a guy like Carlos Santana?

Of course, to Thomas' credit, he's the first one to admit that the success of that single "Smooth," and of Santana's album "Supernatural," is a strange and wonderful thing. Happily, his own band is coming out with an album soon, too.

But in the meantime, as MTV News' Kara Manning recently found out, Thomas is more than happy to keep "Smooth" talking, while thanking his lucky stars for Matchbox 20's past -- and, we're willing to predict, future -- success.
