As Reggie "Redman" Noble's single "Let's Get Dirty (I Can't Get in Da Club)," suggests, he's an MC who's not afraid to get dirt under his nails. Red's humorous-yet-rugged tales of the 'hood have been universally accepted by everyone from skate kids to ghetto-fab glam girls. But the Funk Doc isn't worried about getting too large. He wants to stay subterranean.

"I got some things I want to bubble," Red said of his upcoming ventures, which include a production deal with Def Jam that will have him overseeing albums by protégés Icarus and Saukrates. "I don't want to be the largest crew. We just want to hold down the underground field. Our standards are not that big."

With his fifth LP, Malpractice, the Brick City ambassador delivers yet another funked-out opus, this one recorded while simultaneously filming "How High," his first movie, with Method Man and Danny DeVito. "This album is better than Doc's Da Name 2000," Red said.

Stopping off on the way to see his lawyer, Red talked with Shaheem Reid about going inside the actors' studio with Method Man, the return of Def Squad and his beef with New York clubs.

MTV: Using DJ Kool on the hook for "Let's Get Dirty (I Can't Get In Da Club)" came out of left field. How'd you hook up with him?

Redman: That's my man. I always talked about doing a tune with DJ Kool ever since the Muddy Waters album, but I just never found the right tune. I'm not the kind of cat who runs to new producers. I don't run to the new n---a that's happening. I run back to the cats that were doing it, that still have the feeling to do it. DJ Kool put in mad time. For a cat to be that long in the game and jump on a new sound, that just goes to show me that I got mad time in this game to [make] any kind of music I want [to] and make money. He really opened me up on a couple of life situations.

MTV: What's the last club you couldn't get into?

Redman: NV [in New York]. And as ghetto as the Tunnel is sometimes, I couldn't get into the Tunnel. And the other damn club, they had me standing like, "Damn, n---a, are you crazy?" I mean, scream at me, man, what the f--- is going on? I was in the line for like an hour. I was up out of there. I said I was never going to go to another New York club again. I guess I don't have the juice. Every other state shows love, but New York, sh--!
