MTV Radio: Your fans have been waiting for this album for a while now and are very excited about it. Is your new single a taste of what we can expect from it?
Drew Lachey: We really felt strongly going in that we needed to have an up-tempo for our first single, because that is something we haven't done. It's not something we have neglected in the past 'cause we didn't think we could or we didn't like doing up-tempo, fast songs, but it just didn't happen for whatever reason. So we really felt this time around we were going to release an up-tempo first and then we got a hold of this great song, "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)." It was the first song we recorded, and from that moment on, it was kind of the song to beat as first single. It's just got a lot of energy, but yet at the same time, it's very romantic and sexy. It's definitely different from anything we've ever done, and I think different from what's out there right now. We're very excited about it, and hopefully one else will be just as excited.
MTV: The first thing I noticed about the song was that it was very different from what you've done, and the video follows that lead. It's pretty different as well.
Nick Lachey: This video is different. [Director] Wayne Isham did this one, as well as our past three, but it's just a beautiful location. We filmed it in Mexico. We figured, hey, what better place than Mexico to get the actual vibe and the essence of the song, the sensuality, and the heat and romance? So we filmed it on top of the [Mayan] Ruins, which is actually the first time those ruins have ever been [used as a location], so that was pretty exciting. Wayne just listened to the song, lived with it for a while, figured out what he pictured when he heard the song and how he envisioned it. We kind of really trusted him on this one. We didn't say, "Well, we want this, this, and this, we want a storyline, we don't want a storyline." We just kind of said, "All right, tell us what you think about this song and what type of reactions it gives you." Then we went down there and just did it. Wayne did a great job of creating this whole fiesta and Day of the Dead parade. Just beautiful locations. We couldn't have asked for more.
MTV: It definitely shows a growth period in this band. Is that apparent on the rest of this album? Do you think this album is very much more mature than the other one?
Drew: We would definitely like to think so. With all our albums, we try to go for diversity, and we really didn't want to do an album that sounds the same song after song, 'cause I think that gets boring and monotonous after a while. What we tried to do was first of all create a more up-tempo record, one that definitely had more energy more life in terms of up-tempos being on it, and in addition to that, just different types of songs. We worked with one producer from Sweden who did seven different types of songs, every single one very much different from the other. [We don't want] to alienate any fans that we've gained so far, because our younger fans are very important to us, but we feel like they'll definitely grow with us. We, at the same time, wanted to capture that older demographic, which we already think we've kind of tapped into, but we want to explore more.
MTV: Backstreet Boys come out with an album and sell 1 million; 'NSYNC comes out, 2 million. Are you guys looking for 3 million the first week?
Drew: 1.5 thousand copies, and I'll be happy.
Nick: We're really just trying to go out there and do the best we can. I've said it before, I think 'NSYNC's record is kind of the mark. I mean, I don't think anybody is really going to break that for a long time. That was just an amazing feat for them to accomplish in their first week. We have high hopes for what it's going to do the first week, but I don't think we're really gauging our goal off of any other group. We're just going out and trying to have a good first week, just beat our last record, which shouldn't be too hard. All we have to do is sell seven records this time, and we'll beat our last album. Drew: I think you have to compete always within yourself. Obviously 'NSYNC is having a great run right now, and we couldn't be happier for those guys. They really deserve it. They work hard. But you have to be competitive, and you have to challenge yourself within yourself and as a group. We're just trying to expand off of what we've already done and know that we're growing. That is the most important thing.
MTV: You guys are definitely showing a lot more diversity in what you want to do and can do and what will come in the future. But do you think this record will get lumped into a "boy band" category anyway?
Drew: I think the opportunity, say, to work with Max Martin has always been there, but will we work with him? Absolutely not, because that's already been explored. That's already been done. What we wanted to do was create something that is 98 Degrees. We've kind of created our own vibe, I think, or niche, and however successful or unsuccessful that is, at least we know we're true to ourselves. People are always going to pigeonhole you and categorize what you do, 'cause it's easy. It doesn't take a lot of thinking. But we feel good about what we've done, and in the end, that's what's most important.
