WHITNEY AND MARIAH

JOHN NORRIS: Obviously, everyone wants to know how this has been going, shooting the video [28.8 RealVideo] with Mariah...

WHITNEY HOUSTON: Oh, Great! Really, I can't complain. We're tired as hell, but it's going so good you know. She and I have a good chemistry together. The song -- it's powerful. It's a lot of fun to perform with her.

JOHN: How did this song, "When You Believe" [28.8 RealAudio] come together? Who did they come to first? Or who was first on board for it?

WHITNEY: You know what? I have no idea how it all went. All I know is that Mariah and I ended up doing this duet! Jeffrey Katzenburg out of Dreamworks, I think he told Mariah that I was gonna' do it and told me that Mariah was gonna do it -- so we both ended up doing it!

JOHN: It's written by Steven Schwartz, who is known for his more theatrical background, and it's kinda' gone from more of a theatrical song to more of a pop song, hasn't it? With Babyface working on it?

WHITNEY: Well, yeah! But it fits the film. The meaning behind the song is, you know, about the book of Exodus: the children of Israel are crossing the desert and getting to the promised land and it's relative to any situation trying to get over some sort of obstacle to get to another point in life, to get there. So, you know, the meaning of the song is really great. [28.8 RealVideo]

JOHN: Some people would think that getting you and Mariah together would be like...

WHITNEY: Like Hell! Huh?

JOHN: Middle East negotiations or something, right? But it wasn't that hard, right? I mean you guys are getting along just fine.

WHITNEY: I think people have great imaginations and they like to sit home and write scripts and stories -- maybe that's all they have to do -- but we work, and we get along! Yeah.

JOHN: You've said before that you can notice in this song in particular the difference in your two voices. Some people think, 'Oh, they're similar,' but there are differences, right?

WHITNEY: I believe so. I think that's why she's Mariah and I'm Whitney! Great differences though. I mean, she and I singing together because of my tone and her tones coming together and making beautiful music -- you know? That's what it's about.

JOHN: Do you have a favorite Mariah song by any chance?

WHITNEY: "Make It Happen."

JOHN: Do you remember first hearing Mariah's music, or when she first came along?

WHITNEY (singing): 'I had a Vision of Love'! Yep, I remember! Man...yes!

JOHN: Was it all good or were you like 'Who's this young girl coming up?'

WHITNEY: Well, it was like... 'Kinda has my tones, but, not quite me...Who is she?' Of course I heard about Mariah coming up. A singer doesn't just pop up on the scene and you go 'Hooo! Who's that?'
