MTV Radio Network: How did the video for "Mudshovel" come about?
Mike Mushok: The video was actually a treatment that I wrote. It was kind of my interpretation of what Aaron was singing about. And we got Gregory Dark to direct it, and basically it's about somebody who's having problems with a relationship. And the part that I liked was the see-through stage with the pit going on underneath it. It was kind of cool.
MTV: And where did the inspiration for the song come from?
Aaron Lewis: I think that's pretty self-explanatory. A relationship at its end, pretty much.
MTV: How was it when you guys first started hearing the single on the radio?
MM: Actually the first single, "Just Go," I remember the first time... our record hadn't even come out. It was actually the day before our record came out, and we were in Minneapolis, and we had a day off. And we'd just had dinner, and we stopped in some porn shop, and there was. "Just Go" was playing in the shop on the radio, and I remember that was the first time [I heard it] being away from my home. I remember the first time I heard it at
Johnny April: Yeah, it was awesome.
MM: We went and bought a bunch of porn and celebrated.
Jon Wysocki: Yeah, we all bought our moms souvenirs.
MTV: Moving to Family Values... that tour was huge. The amount of people that were on that tour, the creativity was just immense. I'm wondering if anything could come in the future with those other acts, being that you spent so much time together. I'm sure people were in the buses and mixing stuff and saying, 'Oh, we should do this.'
AL: There was a lot of different vibes on that tour. I could definitely see a lot of different things meshing together. I mean, you had the rap with Method Man and Redman, Run D.M.C., Mobb Deep, and then you had Primus, which is like a whole bunch of different things. And then you had a bunch of rock bands, and then you had Korn and Limp Bizkit. It was great. A lot of different flavors.
MTV: Did you guys have any time to be creative for yourselves? Did you write new material while you were out on the road for this tour?
MM: I came up with a bunch of ideas trying to get ready for another record, so it's just a matter of coming up with stuff, and for us as a band, being able to sit down and work on some of it. But we haven't really had much of an opportunity to do that, so hopefully that will be coming up in the near future.
MTV: Do you guys like having that kind of creative control?
MM: No, I'd rather somebody come in and tell us exactly what to do all the time, and like... [Laughs] No, it's great that people listen to what we have to say. I think that's one thing that we've been very fortunate about with being on Flip and Elektra, is that in almost everything that we've done, we've had a say in it. It's very rare that something goes out or something happens that we don't know about or can't approve. Something doesn't usually get done without us being involved in it, which is a really good thing, because you hear a lot of people talk about how they... I mean, I remember a friend of mine's band. They were on a major label, and they heard their single on the radio, and it was edited and completely different, and they had no idea. You don't want to be in that situation.
JA: Yeah, so we're fortunate in that aspect.
AL: Fortunate in all aspects.
MTV: You guys kept a journal while you were on tour...
.MM: Yeah, I'm very behind. I actually... you want to know what happened? I was going to write one when we got off tour for these last two weeks, but I had my dog at my house, and when I first got her when she was a puppy, she decided to chew through the power cord on my laptop. And the other day I was home, and I was just about to do it, and I was online, and my battery came up and said, "Your computer is about to die." And I had found my transformer to power my computer in my living room. She had unplugged it, dragged it out into the living room, and I think she continued to kill the power cord and chew all the way through it, so I had to splice it together. It took me about a week to get around to fixing it, so I'm going to write it in the next couple of days. But it's just trying to stay in touch with the fans, and if people want to read it, we should be able to take some time and put something out there for them to just be aware of what's happening and how things are going. So that's all that is.
MTV: What are some of your most memorable experiences with fans?
MM: There was a real good one. Remember, in Orlando, Florida? That guy, he had... he and his wife had separated for about nine months, and they came back. It was, like, the day they got together. And they hadn't talked in a long time, and we were playing at the House Of Blues and literally, they just decided they wanted to try and make it work out. And they both got together, I think it was like the day before, and they realized that they both had spent, like, the whole time away listening to our record, and they both came to the show that night, so that was really cool. So it helped both of them. That's what they both said, so that was kind of neat.
MTV: One other thing I thought was really great, you had a contest...
JW: A t-shirt contest. Yeah, [the winner] did a really good job, and we got a lot of really, really good entries, and that's kind of the one that stood out, so we went with that one.
MTV: There was a legal problem where you couldn't use the cover art.
MM: Well, the thing is, it's a licensing thing. The pictures on the CD are licensed for being sold as a CD, not for merchandise, and you have to pay some astronomical amount of money if you wanted to use any of those images. So we decided to have the fans help us design something. And they all came through. It was great.
AL: If anyone has any other ideas, please forward them, 'cause we need some.
MTV: Do you have an address or something that they can forward them to?
MM: It's imstaind1@aol.com. The problem is it's just very difficult to keep up with all the e-mails, but we do the best we can.
MTV: Looking ahead to the future. When you head back to the studio, do you see yourself moving in a different direction?
MM: It's kind of early to tell. I think we matured from our first record to our second. I would hope we would take the same step from our second to our third. So I think we're going to have to wait to sit down and...
AL: I think it's going to cover a full spectrum again, where there's going to be slower songs, there's going to be heavier songs. There's going to be your run-of-the-mill average songs.
JA: Crappy songs.
JW: Several. |
