Since the break-up of Jane's Addiction in 1991, there has been much speculation (and wishful thinking) about a band reunion. The talk intensified when three of the original Jane's members played together at the
Howard Stern premiere party. And now, finally, three members of Jane's Addiction are together again. MTV News sat down with Perry Farrell, Stephen Perkins, Dave Navarro and Flea (replacing the absent original bassist Eric Avery) this past Monday, July 14 to discuss the long-awaited Jane's Addiction Relapse.
MTV NEWS: There's been many rumors for many months. When was it that you decided you were going to do this?
FLEA: When Perry called.
MTV NEWS: Which was when?
STEPHEN: A month ago.
MTV NEWS: I think a lot of the rumors started when you guys were playing at Howard Stern's private party, at the premiere.
PERRY: Oh, thanks for giving us the answer. That's a good one. Yeah, that Howard Stern thing.
MTV NEWS: But when you guys played that, it did put a lot of thought in people's minds. You know, you guys sounded great. That's the one thing I remember is everybody from MTV and everybody that was in the audience was just amazed.
STEPHEN: We also did a show that night. The next night in New York where Flea and Dave came out and played like six songs with us, so that was even more of a spark.
DAVE: I almost had a nervous breakdown 'cause it just.... It brought back so much memories, ya know.
MTV NEWS: Really?
FLEA: Poor little baby was weeping on my shoulder. It was so sweet.
DAVE: No, I... No, I know I'm usually really sarcastic, but it was such an emotional night.
MTV NEWS: So when everybody would ask you, ya know, a couple of days after that or months after that is this gonna happen, is this a thought. And everybody here that I interviewed at the "Hard Charger" video shoot said "No." Except for Stephen who was like "No comment." So...
STEPHEN: No, well, we were always, like, playing with each other, and when the time and the lines connect that will be the moment. So now it's happening.
MTV NEWS: So when, when did this come into fruition?
STEPHEN: It's all coming together as we speak.
DAVE: It just kind of evolved, I think you know?
PERRY: That's a nice way to have it go. It's how my life pretty much goes.
MTV NEWS: When it was talked about before in February and even before that, you guys seemed to resist it before. Why was that? Why not then and why now? When people brought up the idea to you, Dave in particular, when I asked you about it at "Hard Charger", you said the schedules won't meet up.
