Judging by the time that's passed since she bewitched audiences and surprised critics with her wildly successful debut "Left of the Middle," you might be thinking that Natalie Imbruglia has quietly dropped out of sight. Not so. After some brief soundtrack business for "Go," Imbruglia is back with a breathtaking number called "Identify," which was composed for the upcoming Patricia Arquette/Gabriel Byrne film "Stigmata" (and for the young singer herself) by Smashing Pumpkins honcho Billy Corgan."Identify" is a chilly bit of business; graveyard strings dissolve into Imbruglia's remarkably threadbare voice and meld into Corgan's shimmering reverb, recalling death-obsessed girl-group hits of the '60s. It's like Twinkle's "Terry" filtered through molasses and moss, and it's not like anything you'd expect from Natalie.Roger Coletti of the MTV Radio Network recently dialed up the doe-eyed siren, and they talked about "Identify," Imbruglia's reverence for its penman, and how her plans for her next LP are coming along. Breathe deep, exhale, and join us, won't you?
